All evening they have been going on with pretty much no let up. I expect it for bonfire night. I expect it for New Years. But why is fireworks on Halloween suddenly a thing?! I've got a terrified dog shaking under my duvet and a 10 month old dd that's being kept up by the nearest ones thanks thin shitty bungalow walls

my rabbits are calm as shit in with all the fireworks here in north london, i thought dogs could be trained to deal with modern life

Owllady · 31/10/2015 22:06

Aside from other issues, dogs have much more sensitive hearing at different frequencies and have sensory issues
I'm glad your rabbits are okay though

You said your point of view way up the thread thanks.

Most professional displays are free plus you can usually see them anyway so I hate idiots having them in their garden.(Not saying everyone is an idiot just the ones with no regard for safety)

My dog is terrified he is a rescue and on edge a lot its bad enough with all the trick or treaters. I have put him in another room as I feel bad not answering and I like giving sweets. The fireworks just send him cowering whining and jumping on my lap with the baby.

I am dreading the next few weeks.

My dog has had two homes, one where we think she was a breeding bitch on a puppy farm, and ended up in a shelter before we rehomed her - understandably she is somewhat neurotic and nervous. I wish I could train her out of being so bloody upset by the fireworks - it is horrible to watch her being so upset.

I could drug her with Valium every night between now and the Firework night - so no-one has to miss out on their fun, I suppose. Hmm

Some dogs can take fireworks in their stride. My spaniel does, and shoves her head out of the cat flap to watch. Some are uncontrollably terrified of them, as my elderly labrador has always been. I have to watch him like a hawk or he could do himself an injury trying to burrow through floors, doors and walls.

Personally, I do enjoy a good fireworks display, but I would never buy them and don't believe they should be on sale to the general public. They are far too dangerous, particularly when drunken yobs set them off along the street, sometimes in broad daylight (yes, I have seen that round here too).

The sooner they are restricted to licensed displays only the better IMHO.

YANBU.......They have fuck all to do with Halloween imho. Our dogs are petrified as we've had fireworks going off since we got home from a long country walk (to hopefully tire them out in preparation for tonight) at 5.30pm. They're still going off now......and were last night till about midnight too.

None of the organised displays near us are on till next weekend, these are all parties in gardens locally. Several fucking huge ones have just gone off - I'm in bed now, but DH is sitting with dogs in the office as we can't put them to bed (they sleep in the utility) till it's stopped for the night as one of them barks for hours even after they've stopped unless someone is with her Angry

Wish we had never sold up in the country and moved here now!

Evenstar · 31/10/2015 23:11

You can sign a petition to restrict the sale of fireworks due to the distress caused to pets, it's on the parliamentary petitions website, I don't have a link as it came up on my Facebook. I have signed and shared, if we all do the same we might get some action. It has been terrible here tonight, my little dog has been shaking and barking for several hours Sad

Chattymummyhere · 31/10/2015 23:16

My dogs love watching fireworks always made sure they saw them ASAP once firework season started.

You can't ban everything that scares a few people/animals as everybody is scared of something. As a November born I often had fireworks at my birthday parties always set off safely and not brought too big for the space being used.

I enjoy seeing random fireworks always point them out to the children hell even poundland have started to sell sparklers now won't be long until they have something a bit more powerful. Sure idiots shouldn't have them but why punish everyone else because a few are stupid.

ElementaryMyDear · 31/10/2015 23:22

In my area the fireworks have been going off because of the ending of a certain rather large sporting event. And a very nice free display for the neighbours it was, too.

Dinosaursdontgrowontrees · 31/10/2015 23:26

I just put it down to the Saturday before 5th November. Some displays/parties are today, some next Saturday. It's always the case where I live.
HOWEVER i must say I am getting a bit pissed off now they are still going on now at nearly 11.30! It's far too late. Angry

wasonthelist · 31/10/2015 23:49

Speaking as a killjoy :) I think we could solve some of apparent economic woes and/or quieten things down a bit by slapping a massive tax on fireworks. Judging by how many there are going off, they must cost fuck all.

OTOH I do like to let off few gentle ones for DD on or close to the actual night. I think it would be too draconian to ban me from this because of all the tossers who can't be decent about it.

wasonthelist · 31/10/2015 23:50

BTW - am childishly thrilled I have to fly in these islands on Thursday so hope for a clear night to see plenty of pretty ones.
