People that refuse to go anywhere not nt as they have nt membership

This really boils my wee. I'm my group of friends some insist on going to the same nt places we've been to many times before rather than trying somewhere new as "its not nt so would be wasting money".

They aren't being logical right?

BabyGanoush - Would have it if MIL didn't pay for it for us, it's just really access to lots of different gardens/woods/some castles to look round, with good parking and nice coffee shops. Somewhere to take the DCS a couple of times in the school holidays.

DinosaursRoar · 30/10/2015 21:03

Sorry, wouldn't

Oolva · 30/10/2015 21:07

*Yes, I understand about wanting to get value for money from an NT membership something I've not yet managed. But isn't it selfish of OP's friends to always want to go to their choice of venue and never OP's?

Shouldn't they go where she wants once in a while too?*

Thanks that's it. I just want to go somewhere different for a chance. We are going somewhere tomorrow that ive been to many times before , and I quite fancy somewhere else that ive never been to before.

So go somewhere else! You have a mouth in your head. Speak up. Tell them you'd rather go to X place, they'll probably say they dont want to. You have a choice then of saying "ok well i'm going to X place, i'll catch up with you another time." Or "ok we'll just go to NT as usual" and sulk about it. Either way it is your choice where you go.

Lovemytent · 30/10/2015 21:32

On another note - Is NT better than English Heritage ?
Off topic, but couldn't help but ask..

thegiddylimit · 30/10/2015 21:41

Lovemytent depends where you live. some areas have more EH, some more NT. We have EH memebership because there is only 1 NT place close to us and there are several EH but also we really get our moneys worth when we visit my family and go to all the HS places near them (EH members get into HS sites free).

d270r0 · 30/10/2015 21:53

Why can't you go to the non nt places on different days, by yourself or with different people? Then you could still go to the nt places with them.
I can completely understand their point of view. They have already paid large amounts of money for the membership and want to make sure they get their moneys worth out of it. It doesn't matter if they can 'afford it' or not, they are obviously not wasteful people. They probably do different things on other days of the week, or at the weekend. Its up to them how to spend their money. Maybe these days out with you are the main times they use their nt membership so they want to make sure they make use of it. You are being unreasonable, if you want to spend time with them it shoukdn't matter where. Go other places without them if they don't want to come.

Lovemytent · 30/10/2015 21:58

thegiddylimit - thank you so much. Sorry to be a pain, but what is HS ?Thinking of joining English Heritage tomorrow as going to Kenilworth Castle,it is relatively close and my DS is Castle mad.

ihateminecraft · 30/10/2015 22:04

Ah this is timely! DH and I were just debating if we should join NT or not! Don't want to he restricted to NT only places to justify the cost so all boils down to whether we can get a good enough deal. Anyone know any?

Oolva · 30/10/2015 22:07

Heritage Scotland. Although you dont get free entry unless you've been with eh for over a year, think you get half price.

OP posts:
DickDewy · 30/10/2015 22:24

This thread has reminded me that we were given a year's family NT membership last Christmas.

The year's almost up and we have visited none!

ouryve · 30/10/2015 22:25

It is possible to have the financial means to do something, but still think it's a waste of money, you know.

yeOldeTrout · 30/10/2015 22:26

Blood hell, NT is so expensive. If you can afford NT you can afford to go lots of places.

Just go without them OP. And tell them what fun you had without them, too.

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 30/10/2015 22:26

I have an nt membership, I live in the Lakes and there are loads of benefits to having it, major one being free carparking in popular tourist spots :)
There are loads of my buildings and gardens here too, that yes I do stick to them and think going to other similar places is a waste, particarly on a day to day meet up with friends and kids.
Special occasion things at different places (like Halloween at Muncaster Castle) I don't mind paying for on top of my nt membership.
We definately get our moneys worth with nt though :)

ReadtheSmallPrint · 30/10/2015 22:27

All my friends have f*cking Merlin passes.

They spend the entire year going to nowhere other than Legoland and Chessington (with the odd trip to Warwick Castle when they're 'up north').

....an entire year having to shop at Tesco just to build up enough points..... urghh.

I'd rather go to an NT property. Seriously. A much more relaxing day...

SplatterMustard · 30/10/2015 22:28

We have NT membership, it was a gift. When we go out we always go to NT places because we can't afford to go to other places, it means we don't go to other places that friends want to go but if we can't afford it then we can't afford it.

winewolfhowls · 30/10/2015 22:30

I believe in the idea of making history accessible and maintaining restoring interesting sites too

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 30/10/2015 22:30

It does depend on where you live though. I used to love somewhere that only had 2 nt properties locally so I never bothered with a membership. It's only since moving to Cumbria I see the benefit of it :)

Chocolateteabag · 30/10/2015 22:45

Well going to stick my 2pence in and mention the HHA - historic houses association - which cover lots of houses/castles not under EH/NT
Shameful - HHA cover Muncaster (v near to DM) but now they've kicked the Owl Trust out not sure we'll be rushing back.

ShamefulPlaceMarker · 30/10/2015 22:59

Thanks choc.... We only go once a year, so not really worth it compared to how much we visit nt places :)

LongHardStare · 30/10/2015 23:09

If you fancy going somewere different for a change then go somewhere different.

If you want to see your friends for a meet up, then go to the place people have agreed to meet up.

starlight2007 · 30/10/2015 23:20

Can I ask Op..Do you have to pay to go to NT? If so this would seem more unbalanced.

Is there no where free you can go with a flask of tea if it is just for a run around?

SurlyCue · 30/10/2015 23:30

OP has NT membership too so it wouldnt cost her anything to go there.

arethereanyleftatall · 30/10/2015 23:44

Yabu. I can afford stuff, but I don't like wasting money. Just don't. I'm not mean either, just don't like waste.

SlightlyJaded · 31/10/2015 00:01

Oh this is why I heart mumsnet.

An AIBU featuring National Trust AND English Heritage. Perfection .

I am lowly and can't really justify NT membership, but I do manage to scrape together Kew Gardens and the V&A one each year. Both get used a fair bit.

And FWIW, we did once get a Merlin pass as it was via a friend who could get ridiculous deals, and we did spend every other weekend at Legofuckingland, Thorpe Bastard Park or Chesington World of 3 litre refillable slush Puppies. Once and once only.
