cos I am scared that yet again disabled people will be hit. add that to the millions locals are cutting to sn services...
the money has to come from somewhere.... so whilst I am pleased that so many are happy.
where will it come from?

The whole welfare system infuriates me as I think it's very unfair indeed. Housing benefit needs to be completely rethought and replaced. As it stands it only benefits landlords. If people can't get full-time work then that's different. It's people opting for 16 hours and not willing to do anymore because it's not worth their while.

The tax credits thing was badly thought out. They should have made better off people lose more and the very lowest paid full-time workers retaining most of their benefits. It's the way it was done that raised all the objections.

iamaboveandBeyond · 27/10/2015 18:54

Dont worry lunchpack, im spending mine on a holiday too Grin

My suggestion would be to get rid of bus passes for pensioners and put the state pension up by £15-20 (ish) a week. Cheaper than means testing them, which a lot of people suggest, but means only those who need it get it.

And of course, building some social housing and putting the people in it who pay ridiculous rents with their hb would help too. I'll look out for that flying pig while i wait for the tories to do that!!

Jaxsbum · 27/10/2015 20:34

Dla is already very hard to claim And vheartbreaking
Anyone who thinks other wise should have atry

PIP has got rid of the lower rate of benefit. Pip only has higher and middle level. It is also very hard to claim.

sillymummy11 · 27/10/2015 20:45

they could scrap cuts to inheritance tax, income tax for high earners, tax breaks for corporations, scrap Trident, stop creating more free schools, scrap universal credit and leave things as they are, as itsallgoingtobefine says close tax loopholes, massively tax those that buy properties and leave them empty, as poodle says, rent caps (HB essentially gives benefit money to the people that own the houses who are making huge profits), employ enough health workers on a decent pay rate so that the NHS didn't have to pay agency workers... there are SO many things they could do the list could go on and on and on and on.

sillymummy11 · 27/10/2015 20:49

basically the Tories are cutting the welfare budget for ideological issues rather than fiscal reasons. They are the party of the rich. Unfortunately they'd be looking to reduce benefits for people, disabled and otherwise, whatever the situation was! They want people to 'earn' money, and keep as much of it as possible to themselves, even if they earned it purely by dint of having it in the first place (property, wealth etc). And if people can't earn enough money, even if they work as hard as they possibly can, well, that's tough luck.

Werksallhourz · 27/10/2015 20:57

Not waste money on hosting a foreign dictator for several days.

They had to do that because of the way they severely screwed up a former trip to China (it was a total fiasco and bad for Britain's standing), and Britain needs China onside massively.

It was a charm offensive, and will end up paying for itself numerous times over in ways other than economic. I have to say ... they did pull out all the stops and I have a lot of respect for that -- shows we can still do something well when it really matters. They even got Corbyn onside, so I suspect they filled him in on what was at stake and he donned the white tie without question.

Icedcrunch · 27/10/2015 22:07

For starters they should stop giving money to India (who said they didn't want it) and Pakistan. Both have nuclear programmes, yet last year we gave them £367 million of taxpayers money. Total madness.

Jaxsbum · 27/10/2015 22:15

obviously no money should go abroad whilst cuts are happening here. but they don't think that way.
i just worry if they downscale the TC cut. they will just take it from people less able to fight back

'They should have made better off people lose more and the very lowest paid full-time workers retaining most of their benefits. It's the way it was done that raised all the objections.'

I agree completely. This is what IDS said was going to happen in the next term and this turned out to be what? Another lie? The fact that better off couples get more tax credits under the new system and poor people get less is just spiteful. I don't see that it can be considered a thing else....

ssd · 27/10/2015 22:25

they'll take it from people who don't vote for them, simple.

Dollymixtureyumyum · 28/10/2015 02:05

PIP is so much harder to claim then DLA. I work at an organisation that supports people to fill in the PiP forms and they are dreadful.
The criteria has changed as well. As part of the care component for DLA if you could not cook a meal in an oven or cooker you got points towards the care award. now as long as you can use a microwave you don't get any points.
They have also made the distance that you are unable to walk a lot longer for the mobility award.
Also for fluctuating conditions you have to prove you are affected at least 50% of the time.
Also they have got rid of the middle rate for care and a now higher or lower and believes me more people go down to low care then up.

Dollymixtureyumyum · 28/10/2015 02:10

If anyone had any questions about DLA or PIP feel free to message me if I can help I will

LuisCarol · 28/10/2015 02:19

Most on tax credits are not disabled and can make up the shortfall by working more.

How? Where? What is your evidence for this claim?

cleaty · 28/10/2015 09:07

Yes I am disabled, can't cook, can't have a bath or shower alone. But I can microwave a ready meal and can use wipes to wash myself, so I am not entitled to PIP. People who know me are incredulous that someone as disabled as me is not entitled to it.

memlo · 28/10/2015 09:14

Did you appeal against the PIP decision cleaty? I was denied PIP on transfer from DLA (was on highest rate care/low mob) and got the enhanced living/standard mob for PIP on appeal. I can't cook or bathe most days either, although those weren't the main reasons for my claim. PIP is hard to get but I got mine awarded for 8 years, so I can breathe easy for a bit.

cleaty · 28/10/2015 09:19

No I didn't. I should have got more points than I was given, but I don't think I would have got enough.

redstrawberry10 · 28/10/2015 10:00

somebody suggested scrapping HB how the hell would people pay their rent,im really interested to know ???

live in a cheaper area? Your rent is not fixed no matter where you live. That being said, the rent is too damn high.

I'd say start with the monarchy. Lots of many down the drain there. While we are dreaming.

nearlyhadenough · 28/10/2015 11:13

Stop allowing people to have Child Benefit for children living abroad. Pensioners on any income are entitled to a heating allowance (£200?) each year - even if they have retired to a hot country...

Viviennemary · 28/10/2015 12:02

Housing benefit should be replaced by some kind of rent allowance. I agree this would have tabled according to which area of the country you live in. B Nobody should be living in houses on Housing Benefit which a person who is self supporting in that area can't afford to live in. Agree with abolishing the monarchy. It just looks bad to have people by birthright being supported by the taxpayer. And non elected and all the cousins aunts uncles etc.

fenchurchdent · 28/10/2015 12:11

bviously no money should go abroad whilst cuts are happening here. but they don't think that way

That's not that obvious. Foreign aid is invaluable to people in many countries who desperately need it. Some countries don't need it.

DF has a free bus pass. Gets a heating allowance. His very decent final salary pension doesn't seem to affect his right to get that.

Charity status for private schools? Really.

www.theguardian.com/education/2014/nov/24/private-schools-labour-warning-tax-breaks-tristram-hunt

Tax avoidance by companies.

It all adds up. We're all in it together. But not really.

Jaxsbum · 28/10/2015 12:12

yes but whilst vulnerable people here need it, you can't be so generous

ineedabodytransplant · 28/10/2015 15:37

I'm lucky(and I know it) that I haven't and don't need to claim benfits although as said many times, you never know.

One of my bugbears is that my SIL and BIL retired to and live in Spain. Used to rent out a few houses here and had a small building company. All sold up and thank for a very nice pile of money and bought a place in Spain ouright, cash. They can still get the heating allowance!! I don't know how many people are in the same situation, but bloody hell.

I know it's only a delay but I was pleased that the cuts were stopped, if only for a while. Surely, there must be some, sensible and easily managed way to ensure people who need help actually get it, and those who don't, well don't?

Babyroobs · 28/10/2015 15:48

They need to find a better way of targeting help at those that really need it, although how you do that I don't know. Two families on the same household income getting the same tax creidts, one could be mortgage free and not need them, one could have a high rent or mortgage. Also savings/ proprty are not taken into account currently and neither is income from child maintainence. Also the current system takes no account of children's age and how easy it might be for parents to increase their hours. I'm glad the cuts have been delayed , it ws ludicrous to try to bring it in before the NLW is introduced. However I do think tax credits need a huge overhaul.

iamaboveandBeyond · 29/10/2015 10:31

I figured it out watching the news about the cuts being prosponed a few days ago. They're gonna use this now to scrap the house of lords and save money that way Grin

Or, thinking that polls are (perhaps?) looking anti-lords, use this as justification in future as to why it cant be scrapped...?
