To ask my colleague to not sneeze in his bare hands, then wipe on trousers

Ive probabably caught this big from him that has kept me off work for the last few days a d cost me hundreds. He sneezes in is bare hands, doesn't wash them, just wipes on trousers and then just carries on working. We have to share the same equipment and I think he's hygiene is not acceptable.

Aibu to ask him to carry tissue to sneeze into and to wash his hands if he does sneeze into them to?

Do you lick his trousers?

justgoandgetalife · 23/10/2015 07:26

Foul, disgusting, just plain vomit inducing! Tell him loudly so your colleagues hear you to just not do it! Throw some paper towels at him too. Pretty much a sackable offence in my book!

DoveCazzoEIlMioCaffe · 23/10/2015 07:27

Yeah - the trick here is to NOT chew this chap's trousers. HTH

Sjdorset · 23/10/2015 07:28

Obviously I dont touch his trousers, but the point is wiping won't clean it all off and then he starts touching equipment that we have to share.

Tell him! And get a large bottle of anti bac spray and a big box of tissues.
I hate poor hygiene standards. My immune system is rubbish and when someone gets a cold I get the flu. Yanbu at all to point it out to him!

MrsButtonMoon · 23/10/2015 07:40

Not to be a dick but I'm fairly sure a cold virus and a flu virus are different things. I've been told you can't catch the flu from someone with a cold.

Unless I've heard it wrong.

SouthWesterlyWinds · 23/10/2015 07:54

Whether OP has caught a bug off the colleague or not, shared equipment and lack of hygiene is disgusting. Let's face it, if he can't be arsed with shared hygiene after sneezing, chances are it isn't it top priority in life for other bodily functions.

OP - YANBU. Please don't say you work in the catering industry

Wolpertinger · 23/10/2015 07:59

A cold virus and a flu virus are two totoally different things. One person having a cold virus does not mean you can catch flu from them.

Also, what is it with all the anti-bac spray on Mumsnet?

Bunbaker · 23/10/2015 08:02

Colds and flu are often spread by touch. If you antibac or wash your hands before touching shared equipment you reduce the risks of spreading these bugs considerably - It's just common sense.

I am not usually an anti bac user, but under those circumstances I would insist that the colleague uses it after sneezing.

Flambola · 23/10/2015 08:06

YANBU. He sounds gross.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/10/2015 08:09

YANBU to be grossed out. YABU to be that worked up about it.

The money you touch every day has more germs on it.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/10/2015 08:11

If someone gets a cold you get flu? Confused

I think you need to contact the BMJ as you are a very unique person. and probably prone to a leedle exaggeration when you feel a bit poorly

ObsidianBlackbirdMcNight · 23/10/2015 08:20

Hang on
You mean he sneezes and catches snot in his hands which he wipes on his trousers - or he sneezes, holds his nose as he does so then carries on working after wiping his hands on his trousers? Because I hold my nose when I sneeze and unless I've actually got snot on them I don't wash my hands or anti bac them every time. If it's actual snot he's wiping you have a point.

madmomma · 23/10/2015 08:33

Absolutely gross and I hate this sort of thing, but I doubt anything you say or do would stop him being a Minger.

carlajean · 23/10/2015 08:37

YANBU at all. It's disgusting, regardless of catching anything. I also hate it when people wipe their noses by pushing their palm up their face. We were having a sales talk from an otherwise impressive young woman and she did it. I can only think that she didn't realise she was doing it.

Fluffyears · 23/10/2015 08:37

Throw him some hankies to sneeze in and some anti-bac gel. I'd make sure you anti-bac and wash your hands after touching any shared equipment. Also try to avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth until you have thoroughly washed your hands. Good hygiene on your part will help as well.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/10/2015 08:42

An adult human being sized roll of cotton wool and a portable plastic bubble will also help.

Aliceinwonderlust · 23/10/2015 08:43

Of course you can't ask another adult not to do something like that. That would be awful.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 23/10/2015 08:44

Ostentatiously spritz him and equipment with sanitizer...as you do it say "Handwashing is free!"

Sjdorset · 23/10/2015 08:44

Money is grubby, but probably doesn't have live germs on it. Anyway I rarely use cash, had to pay the log guy in cash and promptly cleaned my hands afterwards because it made me feel grubby. I keep one of those fake 1 pounds on my keyring to use at the pool and supermarket also.

OP posts:
ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 23/10/2015 08:52

Have you any idea how many germs there are in a pool? Confused

TondelayaDellaVentamiglia · 23/10/2015 08:55

what a MINGER!

I told off someone at work many years ago...huge drama over a bit of a cough, but she was at reception, coughing and spluttering ostentatiously, she coughed extravagantly into her hands and then went to use the reception phone and computer

I told her to go wash her hands as we did not all want her vile germs. I got a murmur of approval from the waiting room

Aside from that keeping your own good hygiene measures is your best defence.

fieldfare · 23/10/2015 08:56

MrsButtonMoon you're right they are different virus', but the effects on me and my respiratory system are similar. I was shortening it it my pp so I didn't appear to be waffling on. When I have a 'bad cold', it triggers my asthma, I ache all over, I get a sinus and chest infection and bad diarrhoea, I have a raging temperature and it is a huge effort to get out of bed. I'm wiped out for a few days at least.
All easily avoided if people use a tissue to catch their sneezes, wash their hands or use anti-bac if a sink is not too hand, and dispose of their used tissues properly.

greenhill · 23/10/2015 09:20

If it bothers you that much buy a packet of anti bacterial wipes and wipe everything before you touch it. Anti bac your own hands regularly and ask him, politely, to do the same.

reni2 · 23/10/2015 09:23

Money contains loads of live germs, think toilet level. YANBU, this guy is gross.

You can protect yourself though, it must not come into your mouth, nose, eyes... so soap wash your hands frequently and always before touching any orifice. Treat your hands as if dipped in cholera if you touched shared stuff until you have soaped them, no nose blowing, eating, eye rubbing without this first.
