Work should buy me a stand up desk

Marue · 21/10/2015 18:32

They are really digging their heals about this. It costs maybe 400 that they can detuct against tax and they would of paid a 5 figure amount to an employment agency to requit me.

I don't ask for much at work, I've bought in my own special keyboard and mouse and my training has all been done locally the last few years so saved many times the cost of the desk on hotel and transport expenses.

The company is doing very well and not short of money.

I'm kind of taking offence that they don't want to make this small investment too make my working life better. Aibu?

Because it would set a precedent of employees having to pay for their workstation gear.

And buy a desk because you just want one will also set a precedent. They would have to purchase equipment any employee fancies at that time. Your company has budgets.

It is a two way street. Go through the proper channels and they will provide the desk.

vulgarbunting · 21/10/2015 19:27

I am such an advocate of the stand up desk...would all the stats showing the increase in productivity help?

Sitting is the new smoking, as they say.

KitKat1985 · 21/10/2015 19:28

More importantly OP, where do your workplace stand on the issue of spider milking?

Runs for cover

I sense you might be hard work OP, and your work are digging their heels in because they want to make it clear they will not be jumping every time you click your fingers.

lljkk · 21/10/2015 19:29

hmmm... ime, it's quite common in many jobs that employees pay for some bits. Whether it's a better mop for the cleaners, better steelcaps for the guys on the drilling rig, art supplies for the teacher, or pens, sharpener and file cabinet dividers for the university lecturer.

If you're on 6 figures then this desk is no more expensive to you than a nice fountain pen is to the trainee teacher.

Up to you what battles you want to fight.

Babytookacupwoo · 21/10/2015 19:29

If you're on a six figure salary and they only paid £15k to recruit you they got an absolute bargain. I usually pay 25-30% of salary. They're probably well chuffed.

It's absolutely a 2 way street being employed. But demanding a desk for no good reason is just strange and precious.

I can actually see the benefit of there being a combination of seating and standing workstations.

I work in an office now after 4 years in Retail where I stood every day for 8 hours.

I find now that I sit I often need to stretch my legs, but take it from me standing up for 8 hours a day is a killer.

Be careful what you wish for.

TSSDNCOP · 21/10/2015 19:33

Are there pictures in the thread before I click on it Kit?

KitKat1985 · 21/10/2015 19:36

No - there are links to videos but you can just skip past those.

MatildaTheCat · 21/10/2015 19:37

OP if you stay at one desk all day then I suggest what you really want need is a sit/ stand desk Which you can see is quite a bit more expensive than the price you mention. If you truly need one ask for a formal workplace assessment.

I have a significant back injury and hate sitting but couldn't stand at a desk all day. As others have said, variety is the key.

Get up and move around.

KitKat1985 · 21/10/2015 19:37

I just think it's a bit, ahem, odd that OP has posted two strange AIBUs in 2 days.

TheCatsMother99 · 21/10/2015 19:38

Echo, echo........

I've tried to work out how bad your back is and suggest a back support for your chair (as that works for my DH who has a terrible back) but it seems to be falling on deaf ears..... Or you're just so determined to get a new desk, whether or not you need something that 'major' that you're choosing to ignore my posts because you don't like my suggestions.

ZoeTurtle · 21/10/2015 19:40

I have a special, expensive chair because I have an actual medical need for one. I would have to leave if they made me use a standing desk... I can stand for about 10 minutes before it becomes excruciating.

It was no struggle to get my chair, by the way. Because, you know, I needed it and didn't just fancy it.

ilovesooty · 21/10/2015 19:42

KitKat two is an understatement.

Vastra · 21/10/2015 19:44

I see where you're coming from, OP, in not wanting to set a precedent of employees buying their own work equipment, but equally your employer will not want to set a precedent of buying stuff just because an employee asks. Otherwise they'll have to get Dave in Accounts a fancy chair, voice recognition software for Julie in Facilities and it's a short hop from there to the unicorn and the gold plated toilet seat.
The occupational health route is the way to go.

TheCatsMother99 · 21/10/2015 19:45

That's exactly the thing, if it really is medically required rather than just an osteopath or recommending one then companies are usually really good at providing the required equipment, even if it is costly.

LilacSpunkMonkey · 21/10/2015 19:45

OP has been starting strange threads a lot recently.

And quite a few she never went back to...

LivingInMidnight · 21/10/2015 19:47

I agree with Zoe, my employer just bought everything access to work said I needed.

TrashPanda · 21/10/2015 19:47

Just to let people know, there are a couple of pictures on the thread linked!

arethereanyleftatall · 21/10/2015 19:51

So let's get this straight...
Your attitude stinks, you can't spell, you don't know the difference between have/ of and you're/your, and you're on a 6 figure salary .
Yeah right, pull the other one, it's got bells on it.

MaudGonneMad · 21/10/2015 19:51

I have a sit/stand one. It's brilliant and I love it.

There are lots of studies to show increased productivity, quite apart from health benefits.

I do not have a disability, but I was having shoulder problems and asked for an occupational health assessment and tried a few smaller measures to see if they would alleviate before pushing for the desk.

ZoeTurtle · 21/10/2015 19:53

The OP has never said she's on a six figure salary, by the way. Another poster said if she was on a six figure salary, and others have jumped on it as fact.

MaudGonneMad · 21/10/2015 19:54

Sneering at posters' grammar and spelling is pretty pathetic

ilovesooty · 21/10/2015 19:55

She didn't say she was on a six figure salary but incredibly in my opinion she is a higher rate tax payer.

ilovesooty · 21/10/2015 19:57

Maud in general I agree but I can see why people have commented in this case.
