AIBU, the MIL iinvites us to dinner but gives us lunch

We are having meat and rolls, my DH's favourite. But it's lunch not dinner, or is it just me?

Not really. It's easy if you know what's right!

The children's evening meal with sandwiches and so in is nursery tea, by the way.

It's so much fun being a snob so long as you know you are. The problem is the people without the self awareness to know they are, and who actually take it seriously.

I was born a Londoner, although I've been in Sussex for 40 years and it's always been breakfast/lunch/dinner for me. Calling a midday meal 'dinner' makes as much sense as calling the last meal of the day 'breakfast'. Why wouldn't whatever you have at lunchtime be lunch and whatever you have at dinnertime be dinner? I'm baffled.

Dinner at lunch time if you are at school or an evening meal if it's later or more of an event. Ie friends come over for dinner not for tea.

My DC often ask what is for food. . whats for food tonight I have no idea why as it sounds a bit odd.

Breakfast, Lunch/Dinner are interchangeable and so are dinner/tea (Yorkshire).

Breakfast, lunch and dinner chez lynn except Saturday when you're lucky to get brunch and dinner. I like a nice lie in on a Saturday. Lunch is lunch whether hot or cold as is dinner. I think it's timing rather than content.

My dc like a picnic dinner sometimes especially in the school holidays including ham sandwiches, egg mayo or cheese sandwiches, quiche, pasta salad, coleslaw pate on baguette, scotch eggs,sausage rolls (homemade if im feeling domestic godessy) smoked mackerel pate and tortilla chips.

I agree sally any food I've not cooked is luxury. Dc have asked me what's your favourite food Mum to which I always reply anything I haven't had to cook.

I have lived at times in Scotland, the North West and South so it's pretty much all interchangeable to me and I don't give a stuff what anyone calls it as long as I'm getting fed and I know what a bap, barm, roll, muffin and piece is

Dinner is something that involves more than one plate in this house.

DS tells me XH was invited over for dinner by his mother recently... only to have to cook it!
