This has being playing on my mind, would appreciate advice.

I recently started a new hobby. It's quite expensive but good value for the service I'm getting.

I had my second session a couple of days ago (so all quite new) and was rushing to get there. The hobby costs £40 per session but I got confused and thought it was £50. I definitely remember handing over £50 to the person leading the session; they counted it and put it away.

Later that night I was flicking through my emails and saw one from the week before, reminding everyone that the class was £40 (I paid this the week before so not sure why I forgot!).

I immediately let course leader know but they professed ignorance and said they would "let me off this time" and give me the tenner back next time... I know it's my fault for not having counted correctly in the first place but I feel it's pretty poor that they counted the money (definitely saw them do this) and just pocketed the difference. It's actually put me off continuing a bit.

so you paid £50 for the second session, instead of £40 like the first one?

totally your mistake I'd say...any number of opportunities for you to have realised

aside from which they can surely reconcile the balance taken with the numbers and they'll be a tenner up, you can pay £30 next week and all will be well.

Lurkerandahusband · 16/10/2015 21:58

Yes. It's just me and the teacher though in the session (1-2-1) and they counted it in front of me.

Shiiiiit sorry name change gone wrong

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2015 22:03

What prompted them to say they'd give you the tenner back next week? Did they realise or did you ask?

If you think they're cheating you just go somewhere else.

herderofcats · 16/10/2015 22:04

Let you off?!

It'd put me off going back too.

Lurkerandahusband · 16/10/2015 22:06

I asked but in a fair way I thought, just said I thought I handed over a tenner too much and they replied saying they had no idea but would let me off Confused

SurlyCue · 16/10/2015 22:07

Just pay £30 next week.

MajesticWhine · 16/10/2015 22:08

If I was giving them the benefit of doubt I might think they might have counted the money out without properly noticing, in a mindless sort of way? I wouldn't read too much into it. If you get your tenner back, then no harm done.

PurpleDaisies · 16/10/2015 22:09

It just sounds to me like they're a bit slapdash with money. "Let you off" is probably their way of saying they'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

Piratespoo · 16/10/2015 22:10

They let you off what? Seems a strange this to say. Id be thinking I'll let you off obviously trying to scam me and not letting me know when I had paid to much!

AvaCrowder · 16/10/2015 22:13

How can you miscount? Was is five tens, a fifty, two twenties and a ten or ten fivers?

If you like it give them the benefit, but count out the money next time. What a horrible situation.

spanisharmada · 16/10/2015 22:14

Yes that would piss me off too, 'let you off' really? A) I presume you're not a child so don't need to be spoken to like one and B) They're the ones in the wrong.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 16/10/2015 22:18

Your not having a good week are you? Hope it gets better. Smile

Lurkerandahusband · 16/10/2015 22:18

Thanks, I'll just pay £30 next week.

I don't know, it's tainted things a bit for me to be honest as now I'm scared I got it wrong? But I'm 99% sure I didn't, it was two twenties and a ten Ava

Lurkerandahusband · 16/10/2015 22:19

Haha quiet no! Hence the name change, things are all going a bit badly right now I've taken to MN to vent!!! Sorry all BlushGrin

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 16/10/2015 22:20

No need to apologise, things usually come in threes but I hope not in your case.

KatharineClifton · 16/10/2015 22:40

I hope there is no element of trust in this activity - like climbing or someat?

Coldcupofcoffeepieceofcake · 16/10/2015 22:53

Very very close Katharine (love the nn btw, The English Patient is one of my favourite books/films), which makes it slightly worse...

PaddingtonStareBare · 16/10/2015 23:39

Horse riding ?

MajesticWhine · 16/10/2015 23:41

we could guess, but doesn't hugely help with the actual problem, and might "out" the OP against their wishes.

KatharineClifton · 17/10/2015 10:54

Ah, time will tell then. You won't feel any allegiance to this instructor though, so if you fancy a change at some point it will be easy.

(thank you - one of my faves too :) )

OutToGetYou · 17/10/2015 11:54

Dp pays a maths tutor for dss. Despite being a maths tutor he's always getting the pay wrong.

He looks at it but he's always talking. Always. The guy drives me a bit potty actually.
Dp has often underpaid, or overpaid, or even nof paid and the tutor doesn't notice.

I'd just assumed they were being vacant when you gave it to them, you were just as vacant not knowing the fee.
If you pay £30 next week and it's not mentioned again it's fine. If they bring it up just suck it up as your mistake and pay the £40.

Lurkedforever1 · 17/10/2015 12:07

It doesn't matter what the hobby is, but if it's one where you could reasonably assume they had other things on their mind I wouldn't think anything of it. Eg a riding instructor holding a horse in one hand, one eye on something across the yard, mentally checking your hat is on correctly could easily count it without really noticing in that situation. Whereas someone sat down with seemingly no other distractions I'd be keeping a close eye on.

Coldcupofcoffeepieceofcake · 17/10/2015 13:23

Don't what to say the hobby specifically but yes they were sat down, counted the money as I handed it over, put it in to their bag and ten turned back to me at the beginning of the session to start work. So they weren't distracted.
