Washing up...the RIGHT way!

TheHouseOnTheLane · 15/10/2015 05:02

Ok....some people (MIL) wash the dishes with a sink full of greasy water and Fairy....swishing all the tea dregs, crumbs and bits of food together and then dry them with a manky towel.

This is to save water.

Others like me, wash them under running water...apart from greasy trays which are soaked then scrubbed under running water....and then leave all dishes to air dry.

I can't BEAR MIL's way but she is all "Ooh what a waste!" when she sees me do it my way....in my own home I ignore her but in hers I have to do it her way. (boak)

She will happily water the lawn for ages....and run feet deep baths.

AIBU to think washing up MIL's way is gross?

I soak them in a sink and wash, then rinse under fresh water. But I also rinse the dishes after I use them so it's not gross.

Greasy dishes and pans are washed last, they stay out of the water until everything else is washed. That way if they dirty the water too much, I can drain it and just wash with a soap and sponge.

DH washes under running water. Both ways produce clean dishes.

EElisavetaOfBelsornia · 15/10/2015 05:13

I do it your way. Therefore you are right Smile

ZacharyQuack · 15/10/2015 05:27

I put them in a dishwasher. That's the right way.

Daffodilliesandaisies · 15/10/2015 05:51

I fill up the sink and wash the dishes in there. If the water gets a bit minging I change it. I have a strict system though which means the water doesn't get that mucky until the end. I do glasses, mugs, cutlery, plates, bowls, pans, oven dishes.

OfficeGirl1969 · 15/10/2015 07:07

Fill the sink with scorching hot soapy water, wash. Change if the water gets grubby and oily. Give everything a quick rinse to get the bubbles off, then either leave over night to air dry on the drainer if I'm going straight to bed, otherwise towel dry. Can't stand stuff that's not been properly washed with bits on it, and all greasy!

WhoKnowsWhereTheTimeG0es · 15/10/2015 07:09

What Daffodill says. Rinse under running water, air dry on drainer.

AnyoneButAndre · 15/10/2015 07:11

One sink full of hot soapy water to wash stuff in strict order of dirtiness. Changed as necessary.
Other sink full of hot clean water to dip each item in after washing to rinse and check for remaining dirt.

Artandco · 15/10/2015 07:23

Wash under running water or a dishwasher

howabout · 15/10/2015 07:26

If you wash under running water how do you get the bubbles to do the cleaning?

I have a dishwasher and use the sink for delicates and pots and pans.

CremeEggThief · 15/10/2015 07:26

Rinse, wash up everything under hot running water, one thing at a time, rinse again and air dry. Change sponge every few days and always use a different sponge to wipe the surfaces, also changed every few days.
YANBU.

EponasWildDaughter · 15/10/2015 07:29

Oh i love these Grin Loved the 'mop first/hoover first' one recently. (hoover first, obviously ...)

YANBU OP. I'm with you.

I cant bare the idea of a washing up bowl either.

Artandco · 15/10/2015 07:31

How - I use a dishmatic brush, you fill handle with soap which come through with each scrub so constant soap as much as you need

ValancyJane · 15/10/2015 07:31

Used to agree wash them whilst running under water. However, now that we have a dishwasher I will never go back!

SewingAndCakes · 15/10/2015 07:32

In home ec at school I was shown the following way to wash up;

Hot soapy bowl of water.
Wash in the following order -
Cutlery
Glasses and cups
Plates and bowls
Pans and dishes

Then rinse the soap off and leave to air dry.

I use a dishwasher mostly but still follow the method above when washing by hand.

megletthesecond · 15/10/2015 07:38

Dishwasher here.

When washing up has to be done it's wash and rinse under running water then air dry.

Makes my skin crawl when people leave bubbles on and dry with a tea towel.

MrsBertMacklin · 15/10/2015 07:41

Sink full of soapy water. Butler's sink used to quickly rinse each item en route to the drying rack.

Anastasie · 15/10/2015 07:45

So so happy to find I'm not the only one who rinses everything Smile

The way my mother reacts you would think I was drying stuff on the cat.

My parents always used a full bowl of water, never soaked things (unless pie dish etc) and you had to scrub and no rinsing. I didn't think about it at the time and things were normally clean.

When I grew up I decided I would do it my own way, which is to leave everything to soak in the sink for a while, (ok sometimes a bit too long depending what else I'm doing) and then wipe each bit over with a sponge (put the washing up liquid on the sponge, not in the water) and then when clean, rinse under the tap.

You don't leave it running all the time and our water bills are super low.

I leave to air dry too.

Anastasie · 15/10/2015 07:46

Oh and I do cutlery last because it's at the bottom! and takes longest to soak stuff off, I find.

FindoGask · 15/10/2015 07:48

I don't wash under running water. I rinse first under running water to remove the worst surface detritus, stack everything up next to the sink, then wash in hot-as-I-can-stand water (which is very hot, as I use rubber gloves), in this order: glasses first, then plates and cutlery, then chopping boards/other food preparation stuff, then pans/roasting tins.

I don't rins afterwards, mind you, unless there's a lot of soapy residue.

My mum fills the sink with all the dirty dishes then puts the plug in and fills with hot water, soap etc, and washes it. She then leaves the water in, like some sort of primeval swamp, for the rest of the evening to 'wash' anything else. If she does the washing up after breakfast she'll use the same water to wash up after lunch - and she thinks my perfectly reasonable method is borderline neurotic, I'm sure!

snozzlemaid · 15/10/2015 07:52

I do exactly like you FindoGask.

ghostspirit · 15/10/2015 07:54

had a fry up last night could not be arsed to wash the pans left them in soak. daughter comes in with bf starts cooking puts their plates in the greasy water with the frying pans hate that ffs. so im gonna make them clean the kitchen.

wowfudge · 15/10/2015 07:55

Life is too short - dishwasher every time.

Quietlifenotonyournelly · 15/10/2015 07:59

As Findo but rinse cups and glasses. I leave to air dry or use paper towels to dry. I don't want to pick on mil as she's lovely but if she does force her way to the sink wash up I will wait until she has gone home then redo Smile

RobinHumphries · 15/10/2015 08:01

I do it the same order as FindoGask but I do rinse afterwards.

liquidrevolution · 15/10/2015 08:18

Like daffodil, I wash in a particular order. Glasses always first though otherwise you get greasy streaks. Empty water afterwards. I don't rinse before or after unless very dirty pan.
