To think that if Ocado are going to charge me 5p a sodding bag...

They should put more than one fuckbuggering item in it?

I have no objection to the plastic bag charge at all, and have been a reusable-bag-in-my-pocket type for years but have done an online shop this week and couldn't see an option for bagless delivery. The shopping has duly arrived split between twice as many bags as I'd normally use. Two bags had just three (light) things in them, one just had a bunch of bloody bananas in it!

I appreciate the money raised goes to a good cause but seriously - I don't want the bags and the waste is unnecessary. Shouldn't Ocado try to keep the number of bags to a minimum as we're trying to reduce their usage?

AIBU to think they haven't quite got this?

OP, you haven't replied to the comments about the refund. As an earlier PP has stated, it didn't even have to be an ocado bag that you returned to get the discount. Therefore, you could have only ever have made one single solitary order with Ocado, and earned money back.

The above makes sense, doesn't it?

trollkonor · 15/10/2015 11:55

Wasn't the OP's post about

New bag charge comes in but she ends up with more bags than usual.
Creating more waste which goes against the objective of the new rules.

There's always going to be some teething issues but it does make you scratch your head when things like that happen.

I am pleased to report that today in my Tesco bagless delivery my chilled qourn sausages didn't come in a little blue bag and nether did the chilled chicken kievs. Neither are raw meat Grin

User543212345 · 15/10/2015 11:56

Of course that makes sense Japanese - I'm not an idiot - but would need me to have plastic bags in the house already (I don't) and doesn't address what to do with the 9 they gave me yesterday unless I order with them again.

The AIBU was nothing to do with the refund, or in fact the cost aside from in the title, it was to do with the excessive number of bags in the delivery and us trying to reduce plastic bag waste.

Thanks pico2 I'm so intrigued, I'm going to see if there's any footage on youtube!

Why no, I don't have a life, thank you for asking ;)

TheLambShankRedemption · 15/10/2015 23:33

Off piste, but does anyone know how to get Ocado to stop putting raw meat in the same bags as fresh berries?

SistersOfPercy · 15/10/2015 23:43

Lamb, if you find out can you ask why they insist on putting tins and jars on top of my bread as well? I had a sliced white that was bloody flatbread the other week, though they were quick to refund to their credit.

CakeNinja · 15/10/2015 23:52

I have a weekly ocado delivery and last weekend noticed my shopping came in far fewer bags than normal which led me to believe that they had cut down drastically on the bags used.
He carried them by hand to my doorstep (just ask him to leave them there not request them to be carried all the way through) and didn't use any crates.
I gave him last weeks bags aswell as a whole bunch of others then he got grumpy with me when I didn't know how many there were! Roger then huffily counted them out on my doorstep at 8pm on a Sunday evening letting the cold air in while informing me that next time I should bundle them up into groups of 10 and tie them together Confused before wombling off into his onion van laden with bags.
A very surreal experience.
I will keep you all updated as to my next thrilling instalment on Sunday!!

SistersOfPercy · 16/10/2015 00:01

I have a weekly delivery and have had about the same amount of bags and everything brought to the door in crates as usual.
Your driver sounds like an arse though cake, when I handed mine over tonight I said 'I think there is eight' he said 'that'll do for me' and logged eight without counting.

If you get the driver survey rate accordingly.

BeanIontach · 16/10/2015 00:08

I can't believe they send the shopping to your door in bags! They don't do that in ireland but here a plastic bag is about 22c so people wouldn't tolerate it. when the internet shop arrives you have to quick-as-you-can take all the shopping out of the trays yourself! i do feel pressure to do it quickly.

CakeNinja · 16/10/2015 00:44

sisters I've never had a drivers survey despite having weekly deliveries for about 3 years!

Don't get me wrong, roger didn't rile me, I found the whole situation a bit bemusing really (if a little breezy). The week before, the man just took my bags off to his van, and the next day I got an email about my bag refund.
And every other delivery I've had over the years I've just handed them back the next week.
This week I'll be prepared with my bundled and knotted together chainmail link of bags Grin

SistersOfPercy · 16/10/2015 17:09

Really Cake? I get one a month at least and I've been having weekly deliveries for around the same length of time.

My drivers must need checking up on more haha

CakeNinja · 16/10/2015 17:27

Yes! I have had a couple of phone calls over the years but never an online survey.

SistersOfPercy · 16/10/2015 18:02

Do you get the whispers reviewers coupons?
Never had a phone call so I'm equally deprived Grin

Buxtonstill · 17/10/2015 09:40

I love the reviewer coupons! Have tried all sorts of things for free, including shampoo, chocolates and wine. Anyone checking out this weekend search for 'tillydown'. The fillet steaks are 6 for £13. I was sceptical but they are superb quality and individually vacuum packed.

To think that if Ocado are going to charge me 5p a sodding bag...
Hulababy · 17/10/2015 10:17

We had the fillet steaks half price too.
Dh and Dd had one each earlier this week and really enjoyed them. The other 4 are in the freezer for next week

SoupDragon · 17/10/2015 10:30

I'll just stick to Tesco and their 40p flat rate bag charge. Seems like a massive faff at Ocado. One less stress I could do without.

It's not a faff at all. You just hand the bags back.

bruffin · 17/10/2015 11:26

How is it a faff to spend a few minutes counting the bags. I handed back 15 this morning but they charged me for 12 today but I had at least 14. I handed back 15. I must get the survey 3 or 4 times a year.
I have the tillydown rump steaks from last week, going to have them tonight as ds is home from uni. I think they were only £9 for 6.

Buxtonstill · 17/10/2015 12:17

Hula, I bought 3 packets for the freezer. At £2 a portion, they are also brilliant to slice thinly and use in a stir fry.

CakeNinja · 18/10/2015 09:16

What's a reviewers coupon?
Oh. You get them for leaving reviews?! Grin
I don't leave reviews, so no!

The fillets were out of stock but I got the rumps.

SanityClause · 18/10/2015 09:43

Ocado are just doing what they've always done, but the new law has meant they have to charge and refund for bags, now. They have always encouraged you to return bags, so it would be a bit unfair if they charged for bags, but didn't refund for the returned ones.

Incidentally, my drivers so far have just asked me to estimate the number of bags I am returning.

The plastic bag issue is such a red herring, anyway. The other packaging of supermarket goods is what really needs to be addressed, along with the environmental impact of transporting the goods to their final destination.

SistersOfPercy · 18/10/2015 10:07

Cake, you are sent free products to review honestly on site. Very nice little perk actually Grin

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 18/10/2015 11:18

I asked the Ocado delivery driver whether they reuse the bags and he initially seemed to misunderstand the question and said "yes, we recycle them". I pointed out that it's different to "reusing" them, and are the bags REUSED. He said yes, if they're in good enough condition. That would mean someone checking them and would they really bother when it's easier to dump them all in a recycling bin I wonder.

alsmutko · 18/10/2015 11:37

Given that many plastic bags end up in the sea with the potential to cause injury to sealife I would say it's no red herring. Sure there are more pressing environmental issues to be addressed but even sea life deserves looking after and it's one small thing we can all do ourselves. It does give me the rage seeing so many people accepting so many plastic bags during their shop.

CakeNinja · 18/10/2015 12:55

How do you get to do it Sisters? I want to get free alcohol!

SistersOfPercy · 18/10/2015 13:52

cake every now and again they will ask on Facebook etc if you are interested in becoming a 'star reviewer'. You apply through that and then hopefully get emailed voucher codes for free products to review. You usually get 3 products to review at a time and they have ranged from dog treats to cereals. I did have alcohol once, a raspberry cider, it was lovely!
