To think that if Ocado are going to charge me 5p a sodding bag...

They should put more than one fuckbuggering item in it?

I have no objection to the plastic bag charge at all, and have been a reusable-bag-in-my-pocket type for years but have done an online shop this week and couldn't see an option for bagless delivery. The shopping has duly arrived split between twice as many bags as I'd normally use. Two bags had just three (light) things in them, one just had a bunch of bloody bananas in it!

I appreciate the money raised goes to a good cause but seriously - I don't want the bags and the waste is unnecessary. Shouldn't Ocado try to keep the number of bags to a minimum as we're trying to reduce their usage?

AIBU to think they haven't quite got this?

And the government won't be making money from the scheme, as the companies who donate will be able to claim tax relief on a charitable donation.

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 14/10/2015 19:30

The terms of the scheme are such that just under a penny goes to the Government, 4p is donated to a charitable cause chosen by the retailer.

I didn't make it up, it's been discussed at length in the newspapers. The Evening Standard did some good coverage for those in London.

liquidrevolution · 14/10/2015 20:41

I do get your point about the fact the bags wont be reused and therefore its a waste of energy. I am sure the process of melting bag down and making more bags or yougurt pots or whatever they do with them not good for the environment either.

so YABU.

The 5p charge is essentially for the environment and to encourage us to use less bags. Even with the refund you are not using less bags and you have no choice in the matter.

liquidrevolution · 14/10/2015 20:42

sorry should have read YANBU. (or yarburgh)

Londonista123 · 14/10/2015 21:40

liquid are you sure the bags aren't being reused? I can't find anything on ocado's website either way but have repeatedly received deliveries in bags that look used / had small holes. If so the 5p refund makes sense - O. can "sell" them again.

User543212345 · 14/10/2015 21:45

The blurb on my receipt today said they'd be taken away for recycling next time, not reuse.

pamish · 14/10/2015 21:56

The 5p includes 1p VAT. Your contribution to Trident/wotever.

Noodledoodledoo · 14/10/2015 22:03

I got £1.50 back within 8 hours of our delivery last night - we gave them all our carriers we had at home and the driver said will put it down as 2 dozen - obviously was 30 of them!

Acer77 · 14/10/2015 22:13

The 5p charge does make you think twice about reusing your bags and I think (whether that is the motivation of govt or not) that we all needed a kick up the arse to reuse bags when we go shopping or a motivation to return them to ocado etc for reuse. Plastic bags are a disgusting abuse of the environment so we all just need to get over it and remember to take bags to the shops!!
Can't believe there are so many threads on this subject!!

User543212345 · 14/10/2015 22:20

Acer but I didn't want them in the first place and there were far more than needed. I agree that we need to reduce our usage of them but surely we all do, and that includes Ocado?

I loathe carrier bags and always use cloth reusable ones, it galled me that they were so wasteful with them.

OP posts:
Acer77 · 14/10/2015 23:15

Yes I agree ocado are wasteful with them - putting one or two items per bag is stupid!
All you can do is ask driver to wait a sec while you empty everything onto kitchen table then give them back! At least they reuse them...

SilverBirchWithout · 14/10/2015 23:55

But Ocado are NOT reusing them. They are just being recycled!

Dungandbother · 15/10/2015 00:00

I'm thoroughly hacked off with them. I counted 12 TWELVE bags to the driver and my refund came through as 8.
I logged a refund online for the other four and they refunded me ONE.
so if I'm going to lose 15p a week or so then OCADO CAN F OFF.
How do I tweet humiliate them?

MariaV0nTrapp · 15/10/2015 00:12

I was considering Ocado over Tesco for delivery.. I don't think I'll bother now. I'll just stick to Tesco and their 40p flat rate bag charge. Seems like a massive faff at Ocado. One less stress I could do without.

SilverDragonfly1 · 15/10/2015 08:41

Hang on, it's all automated? So they have machines picking the products and putting them into bags? How does that work? I'm fascinated!

HopLittleBunny · 15/10/2015 08:52

AnchorDown if the government are expecting to 'make' £19m and get 1/5th of the bag charge, does that mean that they have worked out that the public will be paying £95m in 5p bag charges this year? So, we use 19 MILLION plastic bags a year?! Presumably actually more as when working out potential charges, they must have factored in a decrease in bag use to avoid the charge. So, actually, from those figures it could be conservatively estimated that England alone uses 21 million new plastic bags each and every year?!

If that is right, I can see the good in an initiative to encourage a reduction in one use bags going to landfill.

User543212345 · 15/10/2015 09:04

Maria you can opt for bagless at Tesco. I think I'll be shopping there next time.

OP posts:
Acer77 · 15/10/2015 09:55

Let's all tweet them and request a bagless delivery option... @ocado

I would suggest walking to the shops with a long term recycle bag in future if you're so concerned about the environmental impact of Ocado recycling bags

Unfortunately not an option for me at the moment, hence doing an online shop. When I'm well I do my shopping on foot or public transport with my reusable bags, but I can't right now. Thank you for your suggestion though, I couldn't have come up with that on my own [hmmm]

Acer77 · 15/10/2015 10:20

Silver birch you are quite right they don't reuse them, they recycle them.
www.ocado.com/webshop/content/ws5/customerServices/FAQ/customerServicesFAQ there is a whole section about carrier bags here! They will also give you 5p per bag for other supermarket bags and you can hand over 99 bags per order....one way to get rid of the ones you've been hoarding under the sink for years!!

Would be much better if they offered bagless delivery. I'd happily have them empty my shopping onto the kitchen table straight from their reusable crates! I don't want cardboard boxes instead though. Able and Cole use them and it's just a pain as they take up loads of space until the next order...

Sanchar · 15/10/2015 10:27

How fucking patronising incandecentage, some people have illnesses that prevent them from walking even short distances with heavy shopping daily, let alone the multiple trips it would take to get a few days supplies in.

I've vjust had to walk to the shops as my bike has a flat and I am in so much pain now I won't be able to do the other tasks I had planned for today.

Pull your head out of your high and mighty, everso worthy arse and open your eyes to other people's situations.Hmm

Pico2 · 15/10/2015 10:41

Ocado isn't all automated. The boxes whizz round on conveyor belts and stop at stations where a computer tells the person what to put in the box. The box then whizzes off to the next station where another person puts stuff in. Then all of the boxes for your order whizz off to the right place to go on the van that will deliver to you.
