AIBU?

To buy a Yale hoody?

I'm visiting Yale uni at the moment--I'm doing research for work. WIBU to go buy a Yale hoody for cozy moments at home (I'm not really a hoody person outside the house)? Or are such things too naff to consider?

Madwoman If you make less than $65,000 Harvard is completely free, including living expenses. If you earn more than that it is sliding scale up to about $150,000 I think.

So you might save money sending your daughter (if you are not rich).

I'd have to divorce dh, Clara. I earn way less than that but I suspect there is a household income clause! Good to know, though...

I went to Cambridge and wear a Cambridge hoodie sometimes... safe in the knowledge that people will assume that since I am wearing the hoodie I didn't go there! I also have a Yale hoodie which I may have worn while watching Gilmore Girls... Blush

I don't have a uni hoody, but I recently started coaching a sport and have a club hoody. It is cozy beyond belief and has become my go-to slobbing about, feeling a bit under the weather, with pyjamas, early starts, would rather be in bed - garment. It's a job to make sure it's clean on Saturdays!

If you are doing research there can't you truthfully say you went to Yale?

I hope resurrecting an old thread is not a big no no 😅but the current fashion of oversized sweaters with US university names on them, Yale, UCLa etc, is that a big fashion faux pas? Or can you get away with it?

It's perfectly fine if you have a connection to the school. People in the US do it all the time. Some schools have very intense sports fandoms. If those fandoms follow a state school it can be a little tricky in certain areas if you wear a rival school's hoodie, but otherwise have at it.

Primark is literally filled with Harvard, Yale, LA Lakers and Chicago Bulls clothing at the minute so you won't be alone if you come back to the UK. I cant work out if its old season stuff that they are getting rid of over here or whether Primark has bought the license.

I used to love my uni hoody for being cosy indoors. Its just a piece of clothing but Id buy one even if as a momento for wearing around the house.

Don't buy it if you plan to wear it outside - its a big no no in the US to wear college gear if you have not been there - I found this out the hard way.

I’ve found the opposite, @GenerationX2 . People buy college gear all the time here even if they just visit the campus! DD (17) is currently visiting universities and has bought a hoodie or sweatshirt from several of them.

As a Brit, I think it’s daft to wear merch from somewhere you didn’t attend or work at, but it’s totally normal here. I’ve sort of persuaded my American DH to my way of thinking and he now only wears sweatshirts from the places he attended. 😂

I bought the Harvard bag at Primark on sale for £4. The Yale was full price so I didn’t it.

I think there are enough miles between Harvard and me to make it not wanky.

I have a university of Wisconsin hoodie, and I mean this as no disrespect to the uni or its alumni, but it's not an Ivy League place so I don't feel at all braggy wearing it. I bought it because I underestimated how cold Wisconsin is and needed a hoodie, and I liked the cartoon badger on the front.

I'd a actually quite like a Yale one to snuggle up in and watch my Gilmore Girls box set for the umpteenth time (Rory attended Yale in the later episodes). I say get it if you like it.

If it’s a University of Wisconsin hoodie nobody will think you’re bragging but they might think you are drunk 🤣

(It has been in the top ranked party universities as long as I can remember)

there was a time when the menswear section in Primark did not have a single t-shirt for sale without some reference to a US place, team or college on it. I found it amusing on a trip to the UK and wondered how many people who bought them could even locate the places on a map. I remember seeing a WSU one, for example, and asked myself how many Primark shoppers even know where Pullman, WA is. Much less have ever been there.

I’m American and this is entirely false. if you have any connection to a university it’s completely fine to wear their gear. It is common to buy gifts for family members with your uni name if you attend or work at a particular school. Or it often has to do with sport as some university sports are like professional in that it is common to be a fan of, say, Duke basketball even if you’ve never met anyone who has set foot on campus. Usually nobody will even ask unless it’s a small or something unknown school and they recognize it but if someone asked why are you wearing a Yale hoodie and you said I worked at Yale for a while in 2022 that would be COMPLETELY acceptable. My cousins have bought U of Michigan clothing for my DCs because they are big followers of U of Michigan sport despite the fact that neither of them attended.

Not sure where you got your info, PP, but I promise you can definitely wear whatever university hoodie you want and nobody will think twice.

Possibility too early in the morning but I couldn’t even work out what WSU or WA was at first 😂

We need to use the 2 letter abbreviations for British counties more.

American here - anyone can wear any college (University) clothing they like. Someone might say “oh, did you go to Yale?” But no one will care if the answer is no.

Naff.

I had ones from my university when I was a student there, but they were mostly sports ones. I think I still have one in a drawer somewhere and I graduated about 16 years ago!!

I'd think its weird to wear uni kit if you didnt study there.

If you’re only wearing it indoors, why not just buy one from primary?
