Plastic bag charge - big shops will all be paper bags soon

Helenluvsrob · 11/10/2015 17:32

Aibu to think that the bigger non supermarket retailers will turn to paper ASAP?

I'm sure I saw John Lewis paper bag in the new grand central in brum, as well as the usual monsoon ones .

If not they are really going to have to think out the speed at which thry can get people through the tills. I can't juggle half a dozen small items at a till without a belt thingy , pay with my card, get out my reusable bag and pack it myself in less than about twice the time it takes to hand over goods , pay and recieve the ready packed bag. Not to mention putting the receipt in my purse as its not " in the bag from X shop" if I need it.

Reusable a in supermarkets is easy as no slower but this was ugh!

We manage just fine in Wales Hmm

RebootYourEngine · 11/10/2015 17:37

Not more of this nonsense.

In scotland if i am in a non supermarket buying a lot of things i put the stuff on the counter/conveyer belt then get out my bags. Then either i will pack it or the shop worker takes my bag from me and packs it.

Its not fucking rocket science. Oh and shops here charge for paper bags.

TessTackle · 11/10/2015 17:39

I work in a shop and when I ask if you (the customer) need a bag, if you say no, I'll pack your reusable, hessian, whatever bag for you while you sort yourself out. No rush no panic.

Helenluvsrob · 11/10/2015 17:39

Boris that's what I thought. I've always taken bags to aldi too. Maybe it was just crazy busy and I'm cack handed and the staff are all new as its a new centre.....or maybe thryll run from me screaming " her again , she'll want to pack that back pack, watch out!".

Definitely not seen JL paper bags before though

No they won't.

Notso · 11/10/2015 17:41

What Boris said.
Try getting your reusable bag out while you are in the queue and pack as it is scanned. Put the reciept in the reusable bag.
It's really not difficult.

BinkyandFlip · 11/10/2015 17:44

I wish they would. Just been to blooming Tesco and forgot my bag - he gave us three of the new, 'stronger' ones which I had to pay for, and the handle on one of them snapped in half as I was leaving the checkout.

I got another one from him and that seemed to las tthe 20 paces to the car OK but still.

RebootYourEngine · 11/10/2015 17:47

Just buy a bag for life. You pay 10p and thats it. The supermarket will replace it everytime it needs replacing and they do it for free.

bertsdinner · 11/10/2015 17:53

I doubt paper bags will come in (too costly to give away free?) people will just get used to it. In Sainsburys on Friday everyone was getting out old carriers/bags for life, etc so I think it will just become the norm.

noeffingidea · 11/10/2015 17:54

Paper bags should also be charged for, IMO.
You don't have to use them because they're free. I've already politely refused a paper bag in Primarks. They're crap anyway. I put all my clothing purchases into a big sporting direct bag. It was actually much easier to carry than lots of little bags. Of course, big shops won't be too happy to lose all that free advertising.
Ok, going to sound a bit sad here, but I am going to see how long I can last without buying a carrier bag, or using a free one. I haven't forgotten once yet, and I am a bit forgetful generally.

BorisStoleMyWig · 11/10/2015 17:58

Paper is also charged for in Wales. It really isn't that big a deal. I can't believe how many people are stressing about such a first world problem.

RebootYourEngine · 11/10/2015 17:59

Noeffingidea - i love the sports direct bags. They are very handy and pretty sturdy.

YellowBucket · 11/10/2015 18:00

Actually saw several people leaving Nike, H&M, Matalan etc today carrying armfuls of clothes as opposed to paying the 5p charge.
Had laughed about the possibility of it on the drive over. Odd to see it in reality.

MrsTerryPratchett · 11/10/2015 18:09

packingsorted.com.au/ Sorted.

Paper bags are shit for the environment too. They should charge for those as well.

I forgot in Sainsburys today, not a full shop put the items back in the trolley and straight into a box in the back of the car. Its easier if you remember the bags but not the end of the world.

Badders123 · 11/10/2015 18:14

I have watched customers walk out of the shop where I work balancing piles of stuff in their arms rather than pay 5p.
So...it's working.
Less people are taking bags.

TheSnowFairy · 11/10/2015 18:16

We were in Sports Direct yesterday and our shopping included a rucksack and an overnight bag.

The assistant offered us an SD bag for £1.50 - we said no thanks and packed everything in the bags we'd bought!

GruntledOne · 11/10/2015 18:18

OP, if it's that complicated for you, why not just pay for a bag?

BinkyandFlip · 11/10/2015 18:23

See I get the twitch walking around a shop with a big empty bag. My brain keeps thinking they will be watching me assuming I'm about to fill it with stuff I haven't paid for.

Didn't they used to have a policy of watching mums with buggies as they had the potential to hide stuff under the seat and pretend they had forgotten?

Well this is kind of the same isn't it. Everyone enters the shop with a massive empty bag - is it likely to make shoplifting more of a problem?

AnnaMarlowe · 11/10/2015 18:24

Seriously Helen one extra step in the shopping process throw you into chaos? Confused

This change came into force in Scotland with barely a ripple I certainly don't recall a whole pile of MN threads about it or anyone in RL complaining about it.

It was the same with the smoking ban - we just go on with it but when it comes into force in England cue a slew of MN threads.

Lord knows how you're going to cope when they change your drink driving laws to match ours. MN may crash. Hmm

ajandjjmum · 11/10/2015 18:28

On a major clothes shop yesterday with DD, it did cross our minds that it could be a bit of shoplifters charter, as people choose to walk out of a store with piles of clothes draped over their arm. Grin

AnnaMarlowe · 11/10/2015 18:32

Really aj people are walking out of clothes shops with heaps of clothes over their arms rather than paying 5p.

I've never seen that in Scotland.

That's hysterical

Boredofthinkingofnewnames · 11/10/2015 18:33

I thought any single use bag had to be paid for, including paper.

I really don't get the fuss.

Monkendrunky · 11/10/2015 18:33

Monsoon still charge for their paper bags... misses the point
