Plastic bag charge - big shops will all be paper bags soon

Helenluvsrob · 11/10/2015 17:32

Aibu to think that the bigger non supermarket retailers will turn to paper ASAP?

I'm sure I saw John Lewis paper bag in the new grand central in brum, as well as the usual monsoon ones .

If not they are really going to have to think out the speed at which thry can get people through the tills. I can't juggle half a dozen small items at a till without a belt thingy , pay with my card, get out my reusable bag and pack it myself in less than about twice the time it takes to hand over goods , pay and recieve the ready packed bag. Not to mention putting the receipt in my purse as its not " in the bag from X shop" if I need it.

Reusable a in supermarkets is easy as no slower but this was ugh!

We have had to pay for years where I live in Europe. Some supermarkets sell paper bags. Here it is pretty common for people to take there own basket or hessian bag into the shop and use this to put the shopping into before paying.

One thing I would say is a Lear difference is that it is generally not possible in supermarkets to just walk out of the entrance. There is a special gate by the customer service kiosk/desk where you have to be buzzed out.

Another difference is that whether you got lidl/aldi or a larger supermarket it is jot usual to pack your shopping at the checkout, unless it is just a bagful.

Really works ok ime.

I saw a report today saying why pay 5p for a carrier when you can get a trolley for £1. Grin People living close wheeling them home.

Primark aren't charging for the paper bags. I like them because they are good for putting shredding in for the paper recycling at the tip.

LittleMissMarker · 11/10/2015 18:46

No need to carry round a big empty bag at all. I have a couple of these and these and one with an arty design from the local museum. They're all light, strong and fold up into the pocket of a handbag (I can't be bothered packing them properly into their dinky little carry cases). Gift shops and stationery shops sell them. They make nice stocking fillers.

I love the fact that shops always ask if you want a plastic bag now and don't look at you funny if you say no!

Idefix · 11/10/2015 18:46

Not not jot

Littleallovertheshop · 11/10/2015 18:47

This is hilarious - in Scotland we have very few exceptions to the paying rule and society has survived thus far. I can't believe how much fuss is being made down south when every other country in the UK has transitioned just fine with minimal tantrums.

Oh and they never had to security tag them up here either...

HavasuFalls · 11/10/2015 18:48

I expect when it came in in Wales and Scotland people did their fair share of moaning and adjusting.

ghostspirit · 11/10/2015 18:53

why is there so much fuss over 5p for a bag :/ not thi thread just in general

CharleyDavidson · 11/10/2015 18:56

In Wales you pay for any single use bag, so the paper bags at Primark or the ones in Mcdonalds (classy, me) are payable.

There was some moaning, if I remember, but we got over it quite quickly. :)

skinoncustard · 11/10/2015 18:59

Yep, they moaned in Scotland too, and the papers / TV made news out of it. It's all forgotten now. Just another nine day wonder!
Although I have to say ( well whisper) that I still can't get used to it in non food shops. I feel like a bag lady stuffing things in random bags.
Btw I saw a woman leaving M&S with an armful of stuff only to drop a few of the items in the carpark (it was pouring rain) . I did wonder, she obviously had spent loads of money but not the 5 or 10 pence for a couple of bags Confused

HavasuFalls · 11/10/2015 18:59

It's only been a week in England. I don't think it will be being discussed for months.

HavasuFalls · 11/10/2015 19:01

In a clothes shop who does the folding? Customer or till staff? Or do they just give it you in a pile?

Only been food shopping so far.

megletthesecond · 11/10/2015 19:03

Just buy a couple of decent jute bags. Mine last me 2/3 yrs.

skinoncustard · 11/10/2015 19:04

Usually folded neatly, if your lucky depending on store you might even get tissue paper then given to you ---- to stuff in random bagSmile

ilovewelshrarebit123 · 11/10/2015 19:17

I don't get why everyone is so upset about the bag charge.

I live in Wales, when it was brought in no one moaned or complained. We just got on with it and took and still do take bags!

I work for a huge retailer and so far we have no plans to go over to paper bags.

Littleallovertheshop · 11/10/2015 19:25

I don't recall anyone stealing trollies when it came in up here. I also don't recall any news features other than for information

Definitely not seen JL paper bags before though

Had them for years here at certain sizes - have had them most often in the Kitchenware department I think.

PopcornFrenzy · 11/10/2015 19:38

Here in Germany they check your bags/crates at the till to make sure you're not stealing anything.

I think it's funny that people are making a huge deal out of something that should have happened years ago.

DragonMamma · 11/10/2015 19:44

Another Welsh person who really doesn't get the fuss. It was just a thing that happened here and was a non-event.

I use loads less than I used to and if I forget my reusables I just pay my 5p.

DragonMamma · 11/10/2015 19:46

Oh and in some clothes shops they just wrap your stuff up in tissue paper, Oasis is one that always seems to do this and it's lovely

Ubik1 · 11/10/2015 19:47

Jeezo

We've had this in scotland for ages and guess what?

People buy the plastic bags for 5p! They buy them! Abd sometimes they remember their own bags - but a lot of the time they buy them! For 5p!

julesnbump · 11/10/2015 19:50

Just give them your bag when they are putting your items through the tills not exactly rocket science

elephantoverthehill · 11/10/2015 19:57

What I don't get is when you go through a self service check out, in my little part of England, you can't put your own bags on the weighing scale as the computer goes into a hissy fit. So you end up putting the items loose onto the weighing scale and then decant them into your lovely hessian bags. It holds up customers behind me.

goawayalready · 11/10/2015 20:04

this is getting really boring with scotland and wales jumping in with the patronising comments "we did it what's the problem" constantly

there isn't a problem people its called slow news day media hype and trolls on the forum none of this is actually happening in real life

and the story about all the trolleys/baskets disappearing due to the bag charge? was first reported to come from a shop in wales (unnamed of course) and more than likely in scotland too and again in england

it's a load of bullshit

AnnaMarlowe · 11/10/2015 20:09

goaway I'm so sorry if you've felt patronised. By the Welsh and the Scots.

Must be a terrible feeling.
