Birthday present, a chair - who is BU ?

Hello all,

I'd welcome your perspective here on who is BU, my DW or me....

I have a home office and I have an office chair / desk etc

My DW HATES the chair, and for months has been suggesting I get a new one (too big, the cats sleep on it, it has a rip in the seat etc)

I like it - it's comfy, it's good quality, it's perfectly serviceable and there's no need to change a perfectly good chair

Sooooo....it's my birthday in a couple of weeks and my DW wants to get me a new office chair. For my birthday. Yes. A chair she wants. For my birthday.

I think she is being unreasonable for

A. Getting me something that she wants for my birthday
B. Thinking I would love a new chair in general (I've told her I don't want / need one)

My DW thinks I am being unreasonable for not loving the concept of a birthday chair

So please, who IBU here ?

Thanks

BTW what I actually want are some stripey socks

SIBVVU. I would either return it the day after your birthday or give it to a charity shop and then buy yourself a nice birthday present.
Is she always this unreasonable?!

You are both BU as neither of you have consulted the cats on their seating preferences.

Although if the new chair comes in a large cardboard box they'll probably be happy.

This is the DW that wanted to buy my DH a new office chair for his birthday, firstly I have been very entertained reading everyone's comments and thoughts, thanks everyone for your time.

Firstly I was not aware he didn't want this gift until I told him last night, he is one of those guys that has everything, buys the latest gadget the minute they come out, so really hard to buy for, unless it's stripy socks!!

So guess I am not buying the birthday throne, any thoughts on what I can buy as apart from socks, he has given me no ideas.

PS love the comment about us both being BU and not considering our cats, they love sleeping on the chair and take it in turns, they rule this house!

How is your Hungarian coming along?

Olivia2809 · 09/10/2015 22:22

hello, igen, ez egyre jobb, de azt meg kell tanulni többet

Gabilan · 09/10/2015 22:27

I like the wine racks these people sell www.silkwoodtraders.com/catalog/index.php?cPath=15_54

They're not an expensive gift but they are unusual.

Though if the cats work out they can rock the wine bottles, you're stuffed.

Either you're learning Hungarian, or there's a cat on the laptop

Hillijx · 09/10/2015 22:42

I bought my husband an electric toothbrush for his birthday, then I bought myself a head for it so I didn't have to get myself one. Not only did I get him a shit present I also used it for myself! I won't as if IWBU in this situation! Get the chair olivia to pay him back for moaning about you over the Internet!!

UterusUterusGhali · 09/10/2015 23:20

Get him a new kitten to share the chair with.

I don't think that the cat wants a new chair either then!

FishWithABicycle · 10/10/2015 00:23

Glad OPDW turned up and agreed swbu.
When is the cats' birthday. You should give them one of these.

Get him the stripy socks. You don't have to spend £££ on something if that's all he wants.

thegiddylimit · 10/10/2015 00:58

DH once bought me a new TV for my birthday because he wanted a new one. He also told my mother we needed a toaster and she gave me one for Christmas. And he forgot about me on Mothers Day the first year after DD1 was born, I bought myself some expensive jewellery and he never forgot again. I do very well out of telling other people these stories of his uselessness.

SO, I think you should let your DW buy the chair and then tell everyone you're like poor Martin Crane whose snobby son insisted on buying him a chair he didn't want. Everyone will feel sorry for you and your DW will be embarrassed.

However, you have to come up with a better suggestion than fucking stripy socks. DH's current Amazon list is shite and has things on it like 'I wish to expr??ess my grat??itud?e to anyo??ne who visi??ts this wish??list'. Honestly, does that deserve a Star or something? List some books and DVDs like a normal person you weirdo.

CrabbyPatties · 10/10/2015 01:03

YANBU - are you Monica and Chandler perchance? Is your chair the Barker lounger?

NotMeNotYouNotAnyone · 10/10/2015 08:39

Of course you need to get him a birthday throne! And stripy socks. As many pairs as possible. Or somehow make the socks into the throne!

A stripy cover for one of his gadgets?

My dad is equally hard to buy for and one year my sister and I, without discussing it, both got him those oxfam donation gifts where you buy a family a goat or something. I'm sure OP would love a goat.
