Stupid rant and I just want sympathy but I am so fucking sick of giving pens and rulers out only for them to be smashed and thrown across the room or crushed/wrecked.

I feel like I'm constantly replacing stuff Angry

At work?! Shock

GilbertBlytheWouldGetIt · 07/10/2015 18:19

Pens and rulers being thrown across the room? Are you at an unruly school in a British comedy film?

GoodnightDarthVader · 07/10/2015 18:21

Sounds like a typical inner-city school to me :(

Shannaratiger · 07/10/2015 18:21

Don't give them out until they learn to respect other people's stuff/ bring their own.

flobird · 07/10/2015 18:22

I didn't even explain I was a teacher, did I? Grin

Unfortunately, it isn't s comedy!

Muckogy · 07/10/2015 18:22

i presume this is a classroom.

Muckogy · 07/10/2015 18:24

is there any conduct code in place at school to stop this?
sounds shit, BTW.
some people have no respect for anything or anyone.

blueemerald · 07/10/2015 18:28

I teach in a school for boys with social, emotional and behavioural difficulties. I give out pens etc in exchange for something from them (usually a shoe..) No pen to give back, no shoe. They still snap stuff sometimes, out of frustration, but not very often.

flobird · 07/10/2015 18:31

They would not hand over a shoe if I waited for 100 years.

Then they do no work.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 07/10/2015 18:38

Yes, stop handing them out and start handing out harsher punishments.

How do the other kids learn when people are throwing stuff across the room?

Bogeyface · 07/10/2015 18:39

Surely this should be something that management should be dealing with.

Classroom supplies shouldnt come out of your pocket.

What would happen if you told your LM that you would not be providing supplies anymore?

Muckogy · 07/10/2015 18:41

been there.
it is awful.
some kids used to come to class with fuck all. i'd give them materials and then they would trash them. doing any work was out of the question.
this is one of the myriad reasons why i want to get out of teaching.
are you getting any support from year head, principal etc?

Are you a teacher MrsDeVere?

knickernicker · 07/10/2015 18:47

This is why I left state sector. You can't get tougher because you don't get the back up. Those who suggest this really don't know the culture of tougher schools.
You can't stop giving out eqpt because they won't work and they'll fuss about it till you give it out.
I used to give out pencils despite negative consequences because on balance it worked best. The child feels organised because they have a pen or pencil and they're not going round distracting others asking for a pen.

TendonQueen · 07/10/2015 18:47

Have you told someone more senior that it's like this? If so, what have they suggested? Even in a school for kids with difficulties you shouldn't have to keep funding all this.

flobird · 07/10/2015 18:48

I can see how it looks like that, Worra

But you have a class of twenty five children. Ten or so have no pen. Pens are duly given.

Halfway through the lesson, childA breaks his ('It exploded!' Hmm) and hurls it across the room.

Typically this happens a couple of times every lesson - sometimes it isn't 'it exploded', sometimes just chucked in a strop or rage, sometimes a genuine accident but one that was carelessness, not giving a shit (dropping it on the floor and treading on it.)

Onwards and upwards.

OP posts:
WorraLiberty · 07/10/2015 18:49

So what happens to the kids who behave like that?

Are there consequences?

TendonQueen · 07/10/2015 18:49

That's not to state this isn't expected (with a nod to knicker, I don't work in the sector) but that it isn't ok that it is.

flobird · 07/10/2015 18:50

Oh yeah, you follow the school system but the pen is still broken, you know? :)

OP posts:
Muckogy · 07/10/2015 18:51

sigh - this is all too familiar to me.

knickernicker · 07/10/2015 18:53

You could make a chart for each lesson with students' names and tick boxes for pens and rulers. Allocate 5 mins eqpt collection time using chart info. Maybe praise a lot even for those without eqpt who bring back unbroken eqpt.
