One Bing reader said back in 2003 of my Bing books, "Bing is The Ramones of toddler books"; like it was with The Ramones, there's bound to be a busted ear-drum now and then!
As lead writer of the contentious "Swing" ep (with team writers, script editors, producers, and directors all making adjustments, contributions, and omissions), I thought I'd join this thread.
When my daughter was a toddler, I remember the politics and protocols of the public swing frame were occasionally fierce and dramatic, with tension existing between parents/carers as well, who often struggled to remain civilised in the face of the slightest unfairness. Padget's continuing to push Pando when it was clear he was really taking the mickey wasn't in my script, but alas, Padget goofed and ended up super-clueless on screen. I suspect Flop was having big trouble keeping chill--I had to bite my tongue like that in a similar situation rather than open up a grown-up barney.
Sometimes I pity Padget...we conceived her as a relatively inexperienced guardian, a bit nice but dim, and decidedly less capable than the likes of Amma when it came to steering the challenging handful that is Pando. But maybe some of you will be glad to hear that Pando was toned down from the way he behaved in early drafts of the script--he was even worse! We learned early on that if we REALLY told it like it was in toddler life, some eps of Bing would end up unwatchably squabbly.
By all means, let er rip on Mumsnetit's good funbut please don't give up on Bing! He was brought into the world to lighten up what's mistakenly called "The Terrible Twos" (and Threes and Fours). They may not feel like golden years when your little ones (and some of the others' carers) are driving you crazy, but looking back on them, life was never as sweet and golden.
