To think "the godfather" isn't all that

Rainy day today, so a bit of sofa chill time.

Watched the first half an hour of it, and just didn't really get into it so switched off. This is maybe the third time I've done it. It always seems to top most peoples best films ever list, but I just don't see it.

Its it massively over rated tripe?

Sopranos definitely wasn't a comedy. That's not to say there wasn't humour but a lot of it was very very dark.

TheTravellingLemon · 06/10/2015 19:07

YABU, fantastic films and a good book too. But I did prefer the films.

Gottagetmoving · 06/10/2015 19:09

Loved all the film's but the one with Robert de Niro as young Vito was best.

Savagebeauty · 06/10/2015 19:11

I love Godfather 1 and 2. The book is superb.
I am a huge Robert Duvall fan and when Sonby gets shot on the causeway, I sob every time.
I always found the scene with him having sex with Lucy SO erotic. The book explains their relationship so well.

MrsDeathOfRats · 06/10/2015 19:33

Haven't read the whole thread.

Godfather - Definately up there enough for me to buy the box set!! (I can't be bothered with dvd's usually!)

Sopranos is one of my favourite shows. Have watched it 3 times and have been getting a hankering for some soprano action again lately!!

Casino
Goodfellas

2 of my favourite films.

MrsDeathOfRats · 06/10/2015 19:33

Add the departed to that list actually! It is awesome ( watched it about 4 times!)

schokolade · 06/10/2015 19:36

I couldn't get through it either op. Had to keep looking up the plot on Wikipedia. Not the mark of a great movie...

Hated scarface too!

Clawdy · 06/10/2015 20:28

ComposHat I agree with you. I enjoyed the book, but the film was brilliant and memorable.Brando and Pacino were wonderful.

RooftopCat · 06/10/2015 20:35

Watched it many years ago and couldn't follow it. Iirc, i couldn't tell some of the characters apart and had difficulty understanding some of them.
May need to revisit it though.

ThenLaterWhenItGotDark · 06/10/2015 20:35

Definitely agree that whilst GF2 is one of the best films ever made, GF3 is appallingly bad. They really should have stopped with GF2 which IIRC is where the book ends.

Mind you, all of Puzo's other books were shite as well.

I have to watch GF1 and 2 followed by Once Upon a Time in America. Just superb. That music.

eedon · 06/10/2015 20:38

I don't feel sorry for Carmella, she choose that life and knew with every expensive gift what it cost other people, she did turn a blind eye to it.

Sopranos definitely is a comedy!

Love, love, LOVE, The Godfather. Grew up watching it as kids with my dad who was always patient and explained stuff to us about Italian families etc. It fascinated me and my brother and I still can't turn the TV off/over if it's on now, despite having seen both films umpteen times. I do think it's probably of its time and maybe wouldn't have quite the pull over a younger viewer but I think both the first two are masterpieces - Robert De Niro talking Italian - superb! Smile.

PeopleLieActionsDont · 06/10/2015 20:44

Did Carmella really know what she was choosing? I mean, she fell in love with a man and didn't picture that he would have mistresses and she would never be able to leave him or reciprocate because of who he was. Theirs was a very patriarchal society - hers was a guilded cage. What else is she to do but deliberately not see it?
I was struck by how vulnerable the women were if something happened to their men - they had no assets to speak of because of how the money was hidden. I'm over invested

PeopleLieActionsDont · 06/10/2015 20:47

Did you not see the rape story line? Or the one with the gay associate of Tony, who got outed and murdered for who he was. Or the stuff with Christopher's gf - murdered and forgotten about in 5 minutes. Def not a comedy!

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/10/2015 20:47

Huge Godfather fans here.

We watch it again and again, despite knowing it word for word it's just mesmerising.

Al Pacino' portrayal as a young man sucked into the family business to defend their honour and ultimately become a monster willing to sacrifice all to remain top dog is spell binding.

StillStayingClassySanDiego · 06/10/2015 20:49

Sopranos was never a comedy , elements of humour yes but nothing more than that.

expatinscotland · 06/10/2015 20:50

I'm not a big fan of films. I think they are all pretty over-rated.

Savagebeauty · 06/10/2015 20:53

That's a hell of a generalisation expat

WhatTimeIsItCuckoo · 06/10/2015 20:53

Yes, Once Upon A Time in America is great too, as is The Deerhunter with an all round brilliant cast. Gotta love a young Robert De Niro Smile.

TensionWheelsCoolHeels · 06/10/2015 20:54

StillStaying, you've said what I was about to - Pacino's transformation is the most captivating acting I've ever watched.

eedon · 06/10/2015 20:56

She totally knew what she was choosing, Arty's wife was with him before her and said she saw that kind of life and didn't want it. She didn't like them hanging out at the restaurant.

The sproanoes was always a comedy. If you don't understand that read this article that words it better than me

Satirical yes, but comedy? I thought there had to be a positive outcome for something to be classed as a comedy.

eedon · 06/10/2015 21:11

Can't believe I'm the only one calling it a comedy, lots of people consider it one. It doesn't have to have canned laugh to be a comedy.

They never showed Adrianna being killed graphically did they? Just her running away and a gun shot

eedon · 06/10/2015 21:12

Guy was an interior decorator.
Christopher Moltisanti: His house looked like shit.

Best line in the whole thing for me.

I think the start of The Godfather is not very engaging, but that's partly how it weaved its magic - Michael starts by feeling like an outsider, that it's not really his life, then gets drawn in so completely by part 2...
