Some of us cant afford them, some of us prefer android, some of us just (shock horror) want to call and text so dont need a smart phone at all!

So why is all the latest tech geared towards a phone that is outsold by android phones 5 to 1?! Surely it makes more sense for business to use the Android platform on the basis that so many more people use it than to narrow their market to iphone users only?

I bank with Natwest, I would like to be able to use my phone to pay for things in the event that I have forgotten my purse, but I cant because I choose to use an Android phone.

This is leaving aside the whole thing about why iphones are seen as so wonderful. I used one for a while, they are counter intuitive and obscenely expensive. I will stick with Samsung Galaxy thank you!

I found that my iPhone 4s practically threw itself off whatever surface I put it on and the back glass did break pretty easily (although Dh managed to persuade Apple to fix it for free and got some free headphones too).

My iPhone 6 on the other hand is regularly thrown about by my toddlers and has been dropped loads and no breakages. I've never used a case for it either. So I think they have moved to tougher glass.

Anyway, regardless of whether Apple invent, innovate, design, market better than others, they do make pretty things, which are incredibly expensive.

I had one of those little Mac things, and I'd aid a bit more to increase the memory from 2KB to 4 KB and felt magnificent. I used to look at it and think how lovely it was, and it was so easy to navigate and Windows didn't quite exist yet, so iOS was absolutely fab.

I am an Apple fan, unabashed. I have an iPad - but my main computer is a PC runing Windows 7. My laptop is on W10. My phone is Android. I have a kind of back up computer which is a very old Mac, G3 I think.

Do people not protect their phones by putting them in cases? Whether android or iPhone surely if you pay a significant sum of money for a phone it makes sense to spend a little extra on a protective case to reduce the risk of a smashed screen.
Our DS uses the iPad in a daily basis and despite his severe learning difficulties and extreme clumsiness the iPad has lasted 4 years so far without any damage to the screen because we have it in a robust griffin defender case.
Similarly my iPhone is in a protective case as I can't afford to replace it easily.
Do people just not put them in cases because they are too fashion conscious and dont want to spoil the sleek look of the phone?

ApplePaltrow · 07/10/2015 16:17

Put your iphone in a case. Not that difficult. Anyone walking around with a naked iphone is asking for it ;-)

PosterEh · 07/10/2015 16:18

I normally use a case and meant to buy one when I upgraded to an iPhone 6 but never got round to it and it's been fine.

fififrog · 07/10/2015 16:20

OP count yourself lucky - I have a windows phone, which I love, but there are basically NO apps for anything useful!

thelittleredhen · 07/10/2015 16:23

Just to say that I have an iphone (second hand, cost me bugger all) on PAYG. Works fine for me.

dementedma · 07/10/2015 16:31

Dd had only had her iPhone a couple of days and hadn't got round to getting a case for it. Her old case didn't fit. The screen broke while it was being carried in a bag. I have an Android phone without a case which is carried in my briefcase, pockets and anywhere else. Two years on has yet to show a mark on the screen. I phones are not robust.

Jux · 07/10/2015 16:47

I have a case for my iPad, but not my phone. I've had my phone 5+ years. No smashed screen, a bit scuffed and grubby though. Still working fine but the menu button is losing it's responsivity.

I mainly agree with your analysis, Ricardian, but not quite. One of the things Apple do really well is to make deliberate choices about which jobs-to-be-done / problems-to-solve they will address. They are not choosing to just do 90% of what a home-cooked / Android will do, really really well: they are choosing to exclude some functionality because it will interfere with the overall value of the product, and they are including some other functionality that can't be found anywhere vaguely mainstream, and including features that are really quite expensive to engineer, because they believe it will make the device more magical / delightful. They have a very different understanding of the end user from their competitors. In so doing, they satisfy the needs / desires of large segments, and are happy to leave others to fight over the scraps of the market that really require removable batteries / SD cards, etc, even if those scraps are fairly large. Often, this means ignoring an unprofitable segment, which Apple is consistently great at doing.

I had a Nexus 4, then an iPhone. Hated it so gave it to DS and got myself a Nexus 5. I much prefer it.

It's amusing to hear mutterings about everything set up for iPhones. I started using computers at work back in 1990 and the research institute I worked for used Macs (scientists and media all tended to use Macs in those days because of the (then) superior graphics).

I continued to use Macs because I liked them and they were user friendly, except of course every bit of generic software you wanted to add in the 90s was all for bloody PCs (not available for Macs). Assumption that everyone used a PC then.

Funny to see the boot on the other foot with phones….

WINDOWS PHONE 4 LYFE!

Haha seriously though, my Lumia 930 is brilliant. I've seen very little WinPho/Nokia love on this thread! Yeah, you might not have dedicated banking apps but Internet Explorer on my phone works SO much better than the default Android browser on my old Galaxy S3.

And now I've praised Internet Explorer, I think I'll go and have a lie down... Smile
