Some of us cant afford them, some of us prefer android, some of us just (shock horror) want to call and text so dont need a smart phone at all!

So why is all the latest tech geared towards a phone that is outsold by android phones 5 to 1?! Surely it makes more sense for business to use the Android platform on the basis that so many more people use it than to narrow their market to iphone users only?

I bank with Natwest, I would like to be able to use my phone to pay for things in the event that I have forgotten my purse, but I cant because I choose to use an Android phone.

This is leaving aside the whole thing about why iphones are seen as so wonderful. I used one for a while, they are counter intuitive and obscenely expensive. I will stick with Samsung Galaxy thank you!

It's the VHS-Betamax debate all over again :)

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 06/10/2015 12:02

I have an iPhone. I would have replaced my 4S with an Android but I won an iPhone 6 in a competition.

I love that it works well and looks good. But I would still prefer an Android that does the same thing but a) I can expand the memory on; and b) I can just drag and drop and use other software with.

I HATE that when my laptop broke I couldn't easily suck all the music off my phone and put it back onto iTunes on my new laptop. I HATE that every time there is a new update things move around. I HATE that when I try and move things around on my phone it takes so long and loads of workarounds because iTunes (in particular) never seems to work properly.

And I loved Swype when I had an Android. Nothing comparable on iPhone Sad

SistersOfPercy · 06/10/2015 12:04

I dont know where I fit into things. I had an iPhone up to the 4 and got a little bored. Same thing every time and I was upgrading to something I could barely see the difference with, so, I swapped to a Samsung Galaxy S3. I was happy with that, but again the S4 and S5 were very 'samey' and I wanted the change so went back to an iPhone 5S.
I'm currently looking at going up to the 6s Plus because at present I like the integration with my Macbook Pro. After that, who knows? Might even end up going HTC.

I'm not especially loyal to Android or Iphone.

SistersOfPercy · 06/10/2015 12:05

Felicia both Swype and Swiftkey are on iPhone.

Pixi2 · 06/10/2015 12:12

I have an iPhone. I still prefer to pay with card or cash. I'm already far too reliant on my smartphone without adding another app to use for shopping.

Georgethesecond · 06/10/2015 12:13

Itunes is indeed the work of the very devil

toomanyeggs · 06/10/2015 12:23

The main reasons I have one [iphone] is that's it's compatible with other things I have and the glass screen is very thick, much thicker than other phones which crack far sooner. Almost all my friends & dh have an iphone. About 80% have dropped theirs & broken it. I have bounced several Android phones and scuffed the covers, at best...never cracked a screen.

In fact, the screen on an iphone is notoriously thin.

The chargers are all the same size and they don't change them with new devices See, this fucking boils my piss (as the saying goes) I bought dh a portable stereo thingo that he can dock his useless work piece of shit iphone onto to play his music. His boss upgrades all the phones. Fucking phone no longer fits on old docking station. $90 of plastic sitting doing bugger all because iphone think they are the balls & everyone wants to pay over the fecking odds for crap tech.

Rant over.

Add to that that the piece of crap CONSTANTLY drops our wifi connection, where as my android, and the kids android tabs & their 3DSxls NEVER drop it.

And don't get me started on the icloud...7 hours to download stuff onto his new iphone? Is that normal? We gave up in the end I did it all manually for him. And we tested it through several different places too, my friend is techy & has the fastest wifi known to man & it still wanted to take 7hrs. My android was done is minutes.

As with working out of the box, pretty much all phone in my experience do this, because ... er ... they have to. If you took something out the box & it wasn't simple to get running, no one would be interested. On that, I'd say once you have the basic settings done, it's all good to go for either model.

My friends laugh at my one woman, nobody cares anti apple stand. Snap!!

There are so many things (mostly already listed) that Android hold superior to iphone. I have no idea why they are as popular as they are.

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/10/2015 12:25

If you're going to offer it, iPhone is far and away the single largest target, because in this case "Android" or even "Android Jelly Bean" isn't an homogenous target, and "Android Jelly Bean on Samsung S6" (or whatever) isn't a very large target.

Jelly Bean Shock that's like three versions ago!

waitrosefizz · 06/10/2015 12:29

Love Windows Phone here, reliable and very customisable. The apps market is growing as is market share but it's relatively new on the scene and these things take time. It's all down to personal experience, though, isn't it? My phone is fine but someone else might smash the screen on theirs and declare it to be rubbish. Horses for courses, totally.

differentnameforthis · 06/10/2015 12:37

Jelly Bean Shock that's like three versions ago

hahah yeah, pretty sure it's Ben & Jerry's by now...

ItsAllGoingToBeFine · 06/10/2015 12:45

Marshmallow... Grin

FeliciaJollygoodfellow · 06/10/2015 13:09

Oh. Confused It's certainly not built in!

ItGoesWithoutSaying · 06/10/2015 13:24

Another of the very few Windows Phone users here. True, doesn't have all the apps that Android and iOS have but, apart from a banking app, there's not much I miss from using Android. It's got Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Whatsapp, etc, etc. True, I don't play games so wouldn't know if it's missing those.

And I'd argue it's easier to use and more reliable than either of the other 2 platforms.

specialsubject · 06/10/2015 13:25

it is a concern that eventually I'll be locked out of stuff if I don't have a brickphone, in the same was as I would be if I didn't have internet access.

but hopefully it is a while off. I have an almost-new small phone that cost me £2, battery lasts two weeks, fits in pocket, weighs very little. A tenner of mobile credit lasts me months because I make phone calls on my landline with a clear signal - costs a fiver a month.

I don't have internet access when I'm out of the house. Non-issue.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 06/10/2015 13:53

I don't understand where all this 'techies don't use Apple' thing is coming from.

DH is a pretty senior IT bod, he - and all his collegues - use Apple.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 06/10/2015 13:54

both Swype and Swiftkey are on iPhone.

Yeah, now - they've been on Android for years!!

Plus, I can guarantee that I can go round anyone's house or office and charge my Android phone....

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 06/10/2015 13:56

DH is a pretty senior IT bod, he - and all his collegues - use Apple.

All our company phones are Apple - because it's easier to lock down, there aren't loads of different variants so it's standard hardware and software across the board.

As a result most of the IT weenies have them - it helps to keep them familiar with the systems they have to support...

murphys · 06/10/2015 14:07

I don't agree with the idea that iPhones are a status symbol though...not when half the 11 year olds at dds school have got one!

Jenny, I did mention that I am not in the UK. Half the kids in schools here most definitely do not have iPhones.

Just out of interest, how long are your phone contracts in UK before you can renew them, one year or two years?

ShelaghTurner · 06/10/2015 14:33

I've been an Apple user since the early 90s, no trendy fangirl here. The brief dealings I've had with Windows and android sucks. Off hand now I can think of half a dozen friends or relatives stuck with android phones and desperately waiting for their contracts to end. And that's just at this moment.

Ultimately you take your choice. Want what apple offer, get an iPhone. Otherwise put up with what you chose. But you can whinge and moan and gripe about apple all you like, I'm the one merrily using Apple Pay and you aren't.

ShelaghTurner · 06/10/2015 14:35

Oh and that $90 bit of plastic sitting there doing nothing can be easily used with another $5 bit of plastic. But hey, leave it sitting and just whinge about it instead if you like.

ShowOfHands · 06/10/2015 14:41

I don't like smart phones at all.

I had to get a new phone recently (on a contract) and they forced me to upgrade (no cost). I like a phone with buttons. I only text and occasionally call on my phone. The only option available was a ruddy smart phone.

It does 832 things I don't need and doesn't do one of the things that I do need. Its alarms are bonkers. You can't turn the phone off as the alarm won't go off (my other phone you could switch off and it still worked) and the alarm also sounds when you have your phone on mute. So if I'm in a meeting and need my phone on silent, I have to cancel my ruddy alarms too.

murphys · 06/10/2015 14:50

Show you can put it onto flight mode if you don't want calls, messages etc, this wont affect your alarm.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 06/10/2015 14:52

I'm the one merrily using Apple Pay and you aren't.

No, I'm using Google Pay, B-Pay or any of the others out there.

Your point being???

AMonsterInParis · 06/10/2015 14:53

It confuses me when people say that apple products are easier to use. I have both apple and android products and tbh there is little difference. I have an iPad and a hudl and both do exaxtly what I want them to do, the only benefit of the iPad is the bigger screen. The iPhone is the same as my other android phone, just a different layout on the main screen. Neither is more difficult to use.

Alibabsandthe40Musketeers · 06/10/2015 16:35

Iknow DH is a contractor, he works freelance, as do the vast majority of his current team. Pretty much all of them use Apple of their own free will.

You are being weirdly aggressive about this. Is it so hard to grasp that a great many people who are very tech savvy choose to use Apple products because they synch so well using iCloud? Messages, mail, documents, calendar - all linked between devices. Apps shared in the cloud, photos shared with other family members without needing to use a separate hosting site.

Another major factor is that until there is a decent Android laptop, then people will continue to choose Apple over Android.
