For a few weeks I have wondered if I have BV (again) as it does not smell good when we have sex. I haven't made time to go to the GP, OH works away.

Have been accusing OH of eating bad food which is making his sperm smell bad Blush

Today we were DTD and I kept getting wafts of this awful awful smell. He said he felt something weird - I felt something weird and ran to the loo and was worried I was pulling out some type of weird prolapse (not medically trained!).

To my horror it was a forgotten about tampon which as I have a Mirena and no periods I cannot remember for the life of me inserting BlushBlushBlush - we are talking months Blush

I have Googled and think I am lucky not to have dropped dead from TSS (been feeling dizzy for 3 months!).

Apart from feeling totally mortified should I go to the GP and share this mortifying info or as I haven't dropped dead am I probably ok?

Has this happened to others? Blush

Happened to me, the smell took a few days to go completely , it was like something crawled up there and died!!!

TheWildRumpyPumpus · 05/10/2015 08:48

Cod introduced us all to the medical term Pouch of Douglas which is apparently a part of the body where tampons can mysteriously disappear to for weeks before being fished out by unfortunate nurses...

She may pop up to regale us with the story herself if we are lucky!

MinecraftWonder · 05/10/2015 08:49

I'm feeling so much better after reading this!

A couple of years ago I went to the GP because i'd experienced bleeding during sex - and quite a bit, enough to worry me. No other symptoms though.

The GP said she could see something which seemed not right and I had to go into the treatment room...where it took two of them about 10 minutes to manage to reach and pull out a forgotten about tampon. When I worked out my periods, I was due on so it had been forgotten about for 3 or 4 weeks Blush and the smell was the most horrific thing ever. It's probably the most mortified I've ever been.

I was fine and had no symptoms but the GP still put me on a course of heavy duty anti-b's, just in case. I would definitely go to the GP op.

To the doctor!!!!

Grapejuicerocks · 05/10/2015 09:05

I've been twice because of this. First time I knew it was in there but couldn't get it out. Very embarrassing telling the receptionist at A&E (was the weekend years ago) and the queue behind, what the problem was. No smell but mortifying anyway. They struggled to get it out too.

Second time, I couldn't remember removing it the night before, but I had as there was nothing there. obviously the copious amount of wine consumed, might have been the reason

I think it's common.

Pseudo341 · 05/10/2015 10:07

Go to the docs, it's not worth risking your health because you're embarrassed. At least a tampons supposed to be used vaginally, I read an article years ago about all the peculiar things Doctors have had to remove from embarrassed women that should never have been up there in the first place, a small bust of Napolean was on the list!

CrapBag · 05/10/2015 12:01

OMG! I didn't realise this was so common. I can always feel a tampon which is why I don't really bother with them as it annoys me.

How can people not feel it? I use an applicator and push it as far as I can get it but can still feel it, especially when I sit down.

KimKK · 05/10/2015 12:03

This happened to me once. Lovely GP advised that it is surprisingly common. Like a PP, I also 'birthed' a tampon several weeks after my period finished. I thought something was falling out of me and was horrified. It didn't smell bad though.

Sidge · 05/10/2015 12:08

I'm a practice nurse and have removed many forgotten tampons.

We always give antibiotics because even after the tampon has gone you have the potential for a significant infection.

You need to see your GP, Nurse Practitioner or Practice Nurse asap really, they may not need to examine you if you are confident you removed the whole tampon but they may suggest they do just to be sure. Antibiotics would be a good idea.

PavlovaPalaver · 05/10/2015 12:25

Happened to me too. I had already been to the GP thinking that I had an infection (because of the smell), so I was on a course of antibiotics.

No idea how long it had been in there, but the smell when it came out was truly horrific. I picked up the kids from school an hour afterwards and when we got home they were all complaining about the horrible smell in the house!!!

All back to normal in a day or so. And I have NEVER forgotten one again.

BathshebaDarkstone · 05/10/2015 12:27

Oh I used to do this occasionally. Now I don't have periods thanks to the implant, which is probably just as well with my horrendous memory! Grin

BathshebaDarkstone · 05/10/2015 12:31

ForChina not me, I haven't had a period for 5 years, so I really hope I haven't left one up there! Grin

EponasWildDaughter · 05/10/2015 12:32

OK. 2 things:

''Pouch of Douglas''? What TF is this please?

And

How do i know if i have a lost tampon or 3? Or if i have a 'pouch'??

Oh and OP, i think if i were you i'd go to the GP just in case.

BlahBlahUsername · 05/10/2015 12:33

Happened to me as well! I spent a day thinking I was having a prolapse, then it emerged. Pretty gross, and I had been feeling ill for about a week, which went away soon as the 'foreign object' was out of me.

EponasWildDaughter · 05/10/2015 12:36

Right. So we all have a pouch.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Recto-uterine_pouch

How have i got to this age (and had 4 kids) without ever hearing/seeing anything about the pouch until now?! Grin

bettyberry · 05/10/2015 12:39

I once lost a condom up there. Still not sure how the bastard thing slipped and ended up way up there.. anyway. I managed to get it out after much awkward rooting about Confused and then off to the chemist for the morning after pill!

Never a tampon but I'm really funny when I wear tampons to make sure the string is easy to grab because of the condom issue. I have a long vagina and a high cervix apparently Blush

Doublebubblebubble · 05/10/2015 12:44

forchina me too!!

I would go to the Drs just to be on the safe side...

I've never lost a tampon but have had to trundle down to a&e to get a condom removed after it fell of and was a bit too high for either of us to reach (note; google suggested using a spoon do not use a spoon)

thoroughly embarrassing - my first speculum - my first morning after pill - the talk from a really old male Dr who was just as embarrassed as me (I was 20).

Good luck op. X

goawayalready · 05/10/2015 12:45

i put two up by accident once i didn't feel it apparently its quite spacious up there Grin the only awful thing that fell out was years ago tampons used to "shed" a little when they were not completely full and this fibrous lump fell out (TMI but in good company)

is anyone else thinking about checking themselves later just in case?

Doublebubblebubble · 05/10/2015 12:46

Xpost betty

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/10/2015 12:48

yes it happened to me too

THE SHAME THE SHAME THE SHAME

I had to go to a doctor that usually dealt with broken limbs (ski resort) and have it yanked out

as for the ex BF, shudders. It really reeked. we split after - cant say I blame him

Doublebubblebubble · 05/10/2015 12:49

What the actual hell is this pouch... Are we as women now kind of kangaroos??

searching wikipedia for more info

stopfuckingshoutingatme · 05/10/2015 12:50

No idea how long it had been in there, but the smell when it came out was truly horrific. I picked up the kids from school an hour afterwards and when we got home they were all complaining about the horrible smell in the house!!!

Oh I am laughing at this! kids are so bloody blunt are they not!!!

Ingles2 · 05/10/2015 12:55

Not a tampon, but I once had to have the little plastic dome from the top of a lillet tampon removed.. it had embedded itself in my cervix! Blush I had some strong antib's as I think you can get quite an infection from any foreign bodies in there.. Better get yourself to the GP but at least it's out! :)

flanjabelle · 05/10/2015 12:58

You poor thing op. the longest I have forgotton about one is a day. I was in such a panic when I realised! You poor thing!

BolshierAryaStark · 05/10/2015 13:07

I seriously have the urge for a check up there now ffs, even though I know there isn't.
