No heating unless it gets to 16

Its been pretty sunny today, so hallway is 19. That's warm enough right? I've got my slippers and jumper on and if anything I'm a bit too hot.

We have a back boiler and a coal fire, no gas, no heating on a timer... If we want heating we need to light the fire, wait for it to heat up then switch the heating pump on manually. Much easier to get extra blankets... Especially when I someone forgot to text the coal man for another delivery...

gingerdad · 03/10/2015 19:21

Ours is 18 when its on with a min of 14 on or off.

InimitableJeeves · 03/10/2015 19:27

If you're in the south east, it's been a lovely day today which definitely doesn't justify heating. I was fine out of doors wearing just a T shirt.

RingDownRingUp · 03/10/2015 19:28

16 is a decent temperature. At 16 with at t-shirt and jumper on I am just the right temperature.

I find houses heated above 20 unbearable. After 10 mins I'm desperate to go outside for some cold fresh air.

jorahmormont · 03/10/2015 19:29

I feel lucky to live in a first floor new build Grin downstairs put their heating on from the end of September onwards so we don't have to put ours on until late November/early December, the heat rises to us Grin

ProcrastinatorGeneral · 03/10/2015 19:30

We're freezing but can't justify the hearing this week. When it's winter proper the heating is put on for a couple of hours in an evening when we're actually in the house :)

Notstayingup · 03/10/2015 19:32

YABU - I would die living in your house - my thermostat is set to 21c - to be fair we have insulated our house to the next level so even when it's 10c outside it's usually 21c inside.

I hate being cold and I hate having to wear jumpers inside. I lived in NZ for a while, and there was no central heating - couldn't live like that (have softened up my big, tough kiwi guy a treat!)

Amummyatlast · 03/10/2015 19:34

I feel the cold. We have th thermostat set at 18 as that's a good temperature for kids, but I'd prefer it at 20.

Jeffreythegiraffe · 03/10/2015 19:36

16 would be way to cold for me. Grew up with mother and stepdad like this and basically remember my childhood winters as constantly being cold. Not nice

^^ This in a nutshell.

My parent's house is cold and I don't enjoy going there in winter. As a child I had chilblains. I used to sit against the radiator in my bedroom.

Consequently I hate being cold.

ShatnersBassoon · 03/10/2015 19:37

Why not decide 'no heating until it's uncomfortably cool without it?', rather than picking an arbitrary, below room temperature target? I'm not into denying myself comfort.

caroldecker · 03/10/2015 19:46

I grew up in a house where we regularly had ice on the inside of the bedroom windows.

TheSecondOfHerName · 03/10/2015 19:51

18 when we're all at home
16 if it's just me or we're out
14 at night

Haven't actually switched on the thermostat yet this autumn though; it's still very mild in the Southeast.

fulldutypaid · 03/10/2015 19:51

Ive not put my heating on yet, I personally go by being chilly. Why we had to change to centigrade instead of fahrenheit is beyond me anyway, all I do is double it and add 35 Grin

Me624 · 03/10/2015 19:56

We have ours set to 18. On the very coldest days, I might turn it up to 20. The heating hasn't gone on yet, it's very mild in the south east during the day, slightly cooler in the evenings so I've got a blanket on the sofa right now.

I grew up in a boiling house. My parents have the heating on 21 as a minimum and sometimes turn it up to 23 or 24. When I first moved in with dh who rarely turned his heating in at all we had a difficult period but I gradually acclimatised and now I find my parents' house stiflingly hot!

LadyPenelope68 · 03/10/2015 19:57

16 is too chilly, particularly if you have a baby

Whatabout · 03/10/2015 19:57

Keeping doors closed, using blankets, slippers and jumpers are all required before cold can be called and heating turned on.

We had no central heating when I was a child. I still see it as a lovely luxury Smile

Recently I've just flicked it on when I've felt a bit chilly. Had it on tonight for a bit, was about 17.5 in here I think. I have the heating temperature set at 19.5.

Fourarmsv2 · 03/10/2015 20:15

We have solar panels so will try and keep to just electric oil filled radiators for as long as possible.

Electric overblanket from ALDI (£40) was my best buy last year :) Have electric blankets on all the beds too :)

Witchend · 03/10/2015 21:00

16!! My DF would say. Maybe extra jumper time. Heating went on at 13. Or rather below as he left the thermostat on that.

First thing I do upon arrival in winter is accidentally knock it up to 16. Wink
19 is only another accidental knock away before night.

Rememberallball · 03/10/2015 21:05

Mine is currently set to come on if temp drops to 10c. I have a light but fleecy blanket on the back of the sofa if I feel cold and would put on another layer before tweeking the thermostat

NegativeIron · 03/10/2015 21:06

Depends who is there. Small babies, the elderly, the chronically ill or immobile, diff for them.

Agree in principle, and love the sensation of waking up all cosy and seeing frost patterns on the window pane. ( less keen on the next stage).

But no longer take the high principled stance after caring for all if the categories above.

Jeffreythegiraffe · 03/10/2015 21:06

Mine is off overnight. In bed it's not cold.

Pandaremote · 03/10/2015 21:07

Right now my thermostat will go on at 16 but in the depths of winter when it's freezing every day it will go on at 18

kittybiscuits · 03/10/2015 21:07

Life is way too short to sit freezing your butt off thinking about how much money you're saving. 20°.
