Burning joss stones in my house is fine with young children around

I love the smell of them, especially in the winter. Only burn one a day and the smell lasts a long time without really much smoke. They are pretty harmless and nothing like smoking right? Surely much safer than the car fumes all the roads are full of?

unfortunate typo! made me laugh though

RiverTam · 03/10/2015 10:17

I hate them, the smell makes me feel really nauseous and the smoke makes me a bit wheezy, so I don't think it's a great idea.

Narp · 03/10/2015 10:17

I don't much like her warbling voice but immolating her is a bit much!

SaucyJack · 03/10/2015 10:20

All smoke is carcinogenic.

BatteryOperatedBoyfriend · 03/10/2015 10:21

is this a reverse?

Hilarious typo, however it took me a while to realise it! Blush

winchester1 · 03/10/2015 10:23

We have two fires and burn candles, I wouldn't worry about one joss stick.

FruSirkaOla · 03/10/2015 10:31

Sorry - but that's the funniest typo I've read for a while Grin

Skiptonlass · 03/10/2015 10:39

It's still indoor pollution. The incense itself is an interesting chemical cocktail. Particulates, benzo (a) pyrene, PAHs etc. Roughly the same profile as having a fag or four inside. Probably much higher particulate levels than a cigarette, but basically yes, same as road fumes and smoke.

I think there have been studies in Asia which link incense exposure to all the same stuff as smoking/indoor air pollution.

redredblue · 03/10/2015 10:45

YABU they smell disgusting
And the smoke is just as bad for you
So are candles, but they don't give off as much

eedon · 03/10/2015 10:45

It it really a chemical cocktail? I use ones that are made from pure natural ingredients and essential oils. Surely it's just the same as a candle, theres only a tiny amount of smoke for 10 mins.

Best title to a thread i've seen for a while lol

formerbabe · 03/10/2015 10:47

Yuk...They smell disgusting.

Are you a student living in digs? If not, get rid of them!

penguinsarecool · 03/10/2015 10:48

The old hippie in me used to love incence sticks during my student day but yes i've heard they are not good for you aswell. I still use them time to time though. Nothing fragrances a house like it.

IDismyname · 03/10/2015 10:50

There was someone posting a few days back asking if it was OK to burn candles in the house, with a toddler and a baby on the way - and what was the safest way of doing it?

Replies came along the lines of that its not OK, and that battery operated tea lights was the way to go.

The OP ignored all advice, and was still asking the question about what the safest method was.

This sounds all to familiar.... Hmm

eedon · 03/10/2015 10:51

OK thanks for that fine. I thought my friend was being ridiculous, looks like I was wrong.

OP posts:
Skiptonlass · 03/10/2015 10:55

Yeah, sorry it is. The naturalness of it doesn't prevent it from being so - tobacco is entirely natural after all. Just because it's natural and 'pure' doesn't make it good for you. Arsenic, belladonna and cyanide are all natural ;)

Candles, indoor stoves etc - all a massive cause of indoor pollution and ill health in the developing world. Burning anything inside is bad for you.

We still have candles in winter (big cultural thing here... )

bigbuttons · 03/10/2015 10:58

that's a hysterical thread titleGrin

eedon · 03/10/2015 11:27

Yep Skipton I've looked into it more and I was being a bit naive about it. As much as it pains me I'll stop doing it and switch to glade type stuff Sad

OP posts:
EsmetheWitch · 03/10/2015 11:29

Glade type stuff is an air pollutant too I'm afraid.
Maybe try a reed diffuser with an essential oil?

Im sorry im laughing too much to answer the actual OP.
But YY to burning Joss Stone the irritant!!

SteamPunkGoth · 03/10/2015 12:24

Poor Joss Stone.

TattyDevine · 03/10/2015 12:40

Love the thread title.

I have a steam diffuser thing where you put a couple of drops of pure essential oil in the water and it gives off a lovely smell.

I'll try and find a link.
