Burning joss stones in my house is fine with young children around

I love the smell of them, especially in the winter. Only burn one a day and the smell lasts a long time without really much smoke. They are pretty harmless and nothing like smoking right? Surely much safer than the car fumes all the roads are full of?

Lets try that again shall we

WhatamessIgotinto · 03/10/2015 13:59

Grin poor old Joss ...

Narp · 03/10/2015 15:37

They sell those diffuser things in Muji as well

bessarabiantiger · 03/10/2015 16:59

I did read the title & immediately think:

yes, her mid-atlantic accent was annoying, however I'm not entirely sure this justifies burning her like a witch.

TiggyD · 03/10/2015 17:25

Reminds me of Glastonbury high street or camden market. Very relaxing in small doses.

FithColumnist · 03/10/2015 17:29

The amount of pearl-clutching that goes on with any kind of smoke makes me wonder how our ancestors back in open fire days didn't all die of lung cancer by the age of 25.

Narp · 03/10/2015 17:32

Fifth

I think lots of people did, didn't they?

BumWad · 03/10/2015 17:38

Oh goodness wish I hadn't open this thread! I love incense sticks and candles! That vaporiser thing looks good mind.

Narp · 03/10/2015 17:41

And cooking over an open fire is a considerable risk to the health of people still forced to do so in the Third World.

WHO factsheet

NB I am linking this to addrees your comment about pearl-clutching and open fires, NOT because I am equating Joss Stone with a major health risk

bessarabiantiger · 03/10/2015 17:41

Yes! I read a fascinating book (after our first visit to the Weald & Downland) and discovered that indoor fires with no chinmey were touted as a cure for those with respiratory problems!

I've completely lost the concept of what we're supposed to be outraged about on this thread. Is the OP about to commit arson on my home by throwing a popular early millenial singer at it with a tribuchet?

is that what's happening? Because that is bloody unreasonable.

Otherwise? Not so much.

pigsDOfly · 03/10/2015 17:51

I remember my son burning joss sticks in the house years ago. He only did it once as one of our poor cats started retching violently as soon as the fumes hit her.

Mind you they have a similar effect on me as well, hate the horrible overwhelm stink they produce.

tiredofbadwifi · 04/10/2015 19:24

I burned incense of all kinds myself in my bedroom with door/windows shut since I was 6. Never burned the house down and have been a professional chorister since around the same age so no lung problems... I seem to be doing ok. I can actually breathe better and hold notes longer and stronger than nearly my whole choir. I wouldn't worry so much if I were you, just maybe keep windows open and don't burn them right next to dc if you do worry?

ShelaghTurner · 04/10/2015 20:44

Wish I hadn't read this too. Has taken me right back to my youth and days spent wandering round Camden market and buying dodgy jewellery and bootleg tapes. And now I'm googling incense to buy...
