their, they're now ....

LurkingHusband · 01/10/2015 16:01

Does it really effect you that much ?

shoofly · 01/10/2015 16:02

Yanbu, it drives me up the wall! But yabu if you tell them. Wink

My autocorrect changes my theirs, there's and there. It's slightly embarrassing to post something and then read it once it's been posted and it's wrong.

SilentlyScreamingAgain · 01/10/2015 16:05

Totally U, not everyone gets the same standard of education in the UK, be annoyed at the cause not the effect.

ThereIsIron · 01/10/2015 16:07

YANBU. They're the same people who keep their socks in a draw.

Naicehamshop · 01/10/2015 16:09

I don't agree Silently - everyone is taught when to use "of" and "have". Whether they choose to listen or not is another matter....

Theycallmemellowjello · 01/10/2015 16:10

Can you be more pacific?

Theycallmemellowjello · 01/10/2015 16:12

... but actually I agree with Silently. Sneering at people with less educational success isn't nice. You wouldn't like it if a bunch of Oxford dons guffawed at your knowledge gaps.

Number3cometome · 01/10/2015 16:15

your wrong to get all stressy about it.

laffymeal · 01/10/2015 16:16

I can't stand it either but if you point it out on here you'll get hung, drawn and quartered and called all sorts of nasty names.

"not everyone gets the same standard of education in the UK"

No, but it's not as if basic grammar is something only taught during postgraduate work at the LSE. I went to a bog standard state comprehensive school. Teachers were very clear on the difference between "could have"; "could've" and "could of". It's not as if I expect people to be able to read Latin. If it were occasional you might think it was one person who for whatever reason struggled with the English language. As it is, it's so common it seems more like a celebration of ignorance.

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 01/10/2015 16:21

I can see that not all schools have the same standards, but I refuse to believe there is a school that isn't teaching basic grammar.

Shockers · 01/10/2015 16:22

I save my annoyance for cruel or spiteful people, because there is intent there. People who say of, instead of have, aren't trying to hurt anyone.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 01/10/2015 16:23

I don't mind that.

I do mind people that can't be arsed to think up a decent AIBU and just recycle one of the same old, same old......

SaskiaRembrandtWasFramed · 01/10/2015 16:24

No, they aren't trying to hurt anyone, but it is sad that they don't want to communicate properly. Plus, it must put them at a disadvantage professionally.

Pedestriana · 01/10/2015 16:25

I've friends who went through the same educational system as me, had the same standard of teaching and who have terrible written grammar and spelling.

I know it's not everyone's strong point, but, I think it is important to be able to spell and write properly if you're putting stuff out in the public domain.

Along with the examples OP gives, I also cringe at 'alot' and 'aswell'. I did have to politely point out to someone a few years ago that it was not "should of". They work as a PA and were typing up minutes for distribution inside the company, and to a client. It would have reflected badly on the company and on the individual.

InTheBox · 01/10/2015 16:25

It's not as if I expect people to be able to read Latin.

^This. It's just basic grammar.

On here it doesn't wind me up particularly as I understand there are problems with autocorrect or fast typing etc. But in RL, especially in conversation I do judge.

Sianilaa · 01/10/2015 16:27

Not everyone receives the same standard of education in the UK?

What's the national curriculum for then?

I would feel pretty confident that everyone is taught the difference between could have, could've and could of.
