I didn't cause the Refugee crisis!

I am in my 30s and I have braces. I had dinner with DH and his BF and his wife.

Talk got round to the Refugee crisis and DH mentioned he was doing a run to raise money for the Red Cross.

BF wife started going on about the crisis is caused by the West (ok fine don't totally disagree) and people like me. Confused

I asked what she ment. She said well people like me with my western ways, caring more about my looks than people. Using up the NHS etc.

So I said to her, my braces didn't cause it, I'm paying for them myself so not on NHS and she is just as 'western' as me so surely we are all to blame them.

Response was no no I'm part if the problem, I care more about my teeth than dying children. AngryI was such a terrible person etc.

She would not shut up and let the subject be changed. Her DH looked so embarrassed so we left earlier than planned.

Yes I get that to many folk us in Britain continuing on with our lives when this is going on and dealing with stupid shit like braces is nothing compared to what refugees are going through. But that doesn't make you a bad person. Surely?

Susan my jaw was broken when I was a toddler and should have had braces when I was younger but I couldn't be arsed with then. They are now a necessary due to pain etc. I has born just before the start of the Falklands so maybe she is on to something.

It's a well known fact that WW1 started after Archduke Ferdinand got braces. If only he'd been content with wonky teeth then the 20th century would have been a much more peaceful time.

BlackeyedSusan · 01/10/2015 13:22

oh.. it is your fault then.. Wink

nah, you did not have braces whenyou were little... that one is my fault

BYOSnowman · 01/10/2015 13:23

So your dh spectacularly fluffed the apology as its actual irrelevant that she was upset by the news. The point is the focuses her anger on you and that is unfair and unhinged.

BYOSnowman · 01/10/2015 13:24

Sorry - your dh's bf. Your dh is merely guilty of having such knob ends for friends!!

londonrach · 01/10/2015 13:34

Op i want words with your braces...they cracked my car window throwing up a random stone from the road, a couple of days ago... Seriously op your 'd'f sounds like she has major problems or very drunk.

MyVisionsComeFromSoup · 01/10/2015 13:48

apologies in advance, I'm getting braces in three weeks, so presumably everything that goes wrong after that will be down to me. Sorry etc

BlackeyedSusan · 01/10/2015 13:51

thanks for the warning visions...

FyreFly · 01/10/2015 22:39

Ilike they're going great thanks, they've been on a month and my horribly wonky snaggle tooth (front and centre, so worse place possible) has already clicked back into line! And thank you for the advice - I am well acquainted with the horrors and pitfalls of food and braces Grin I had them for years as a teenager. I have also had two operations on my jaw in recent years, and am now undergoing what I hope will be the final phase of orthodontic treatment But I will have to have permanent retainers bonded to my teeth for the rest of my life :(

I must have caused a few earthquakes and hurricanes as well as the refugee crisis! Shock

abigamarone · 01/10/2015 23:36

Myvisions, I can confirm that braces do not always cause war and hardship. Indeed, mine caused the fall of the Berlin Wall and freed Nelson Mandela.

redbinneo · 01/10/2015 23:41

I had braces in the early 60's. I think that they were responsible for the Cuban missile crisis.
The filling I had in March 1982 caused the Falklands War.

PatrickPolarBear · 02/10/2015 01:46

So presumably she has packed in her job, if she has one, sold her car and all belongings and set up a nonprofit in Calais or Greece to help needy refugees?

Nope? Didn't think so...Hmm

mimishimmi · 02/10/2015 01:57

NWO policies, racial supremacy theories and 'conquest mentality' among certain Europeans, Jews and probably Arabs (and they will and have collaborated to achieve this and keep the 'lesser peoples' in their place) and the need for the arms industry to have constant war is at the heart of the refugee crisis. Your orthodontist is not. She sounds more than a bit loony if she wasn't drunk.

penguinsarecool · 02/10/2015 02:01

lol yes you and your braces have caused the middle east crisis. How do you sleep at night Wink

Topseyt · 02/10/2015 02:39

I think my response would have been something along the lines of that given by BYO.

This woman is a massive twat and I wouldn't be able to resist telling her so.
