I didn't cause the Refugee crisis!

Iliketoparrty · 30/09/2015 21:47

I am in my 30s and I have braces. I had dinner with DH and his BF and his wife.

Talk got round to the Refugee crisis and DH mentioned he was doing a run to raise money for the Red Cross.

BF wife started going on about the crisis is caused by the West (ok fine don't totally disagree) and people like me. Confused

I asked what she ment. She said well people like me with my western ways, caring more about my looks than people. Using up the NHS etc.

So I said to her, my braces didn't cause it, I'm paying for them myself so not on NHS and she is just as 'western' as me so surely we are all to blame them.

Response was no no I'm part if the problem, I care more about my teeth than dying children. AngryI was such a terrible person etc.

She would not shut up and let the subject be changed. Her DH looked so embarrassed so we left earlier than planned.

Yes I get that to many folk us in Britain continuing on with our lives when this is going on and dealing with stupid shit like braces is nothing compared to what refugees are going through. But that doesn't make you a bad person. Surely?

Your teeth must have been bad to cause such a huge international crisis. And I mean really bad. Good job you're fixing them, hell knows what else they would bring about.

aurynne · 01/10/2015 02:07

Just so you know, the Chile earthquake was also your braces' fault.

CadleCrap · 01/10/2015 02:14

While you are accepting the blame for everything ( very generous of you) can I blame your braces for me not letting DS (7) have a sleepover on a school night.

Thanks:)

Feilin · 01/10/2015 09:53

My jaw didn't grow properly cue braces to stop my teeth falling out and surgery ! Yes that's right SURGERY!!! In my 30's clearly I'm more to blame than anyone else!

reni2 · 01/10/2015 09:55

The government really ought to DO SOMETHING about all these people with wrong jaws and wonky teeth, this is going to end up destroying the planet!

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/10/2015 10:01

This problem goes right to the heart of the Establishment. I mean, have you seen Prince Charles's teeth. If they had been fixed then there wouldn't have been a financial crisis, all wars would end and the El Nino effect would stop. So I think lack of braces is the real issue.

Liomsa · 01/10/2015 10:05

Everyone is ignoring the angle that intergalactic-shit-stirring aliens speak to people through their braces. Just saying.

horsewalksintoabar · 01/10/2015 10:07

She sounds very uneducated, uninformed, and opinionated... a lethal combination. Policies in the West combined with a longstanding Suni- Shia schism poisoning the Middle East combined with the global hunger for diminishing fossil fuels combined with political vacuums allowing for extremism to gain momentum combined with persecution towards Syrian Christians (can I just stop here because the list is loooong) is part of what is causing the refugee crisis... not you. Flowers

formerbabe · 01/10/2015 10:07

Braces and refugees.

Seems like a tenuous link.

horsewalksintoabar · 01/10/2015 10:11

Just reading all of the posts now. Why oh why did I attempt to answer this seriously (I should know by now that you don't do this, 2 pages into a mumsnet thread!). Grin I had braces at 15... not long after, the Gulf War started...so, there's that. Braces are definitely encouraging the chronic instability in the Middle East. F*ck me, I'm enlightened and it's only just gone 10am.

Thefitfatty · 01/10/2015 10:12

a longstanding Suni- Shia schism poisoning the Middle East

That schism was in fact caused by a disagreement about whether to Prophet Mohammed had braces didn't ya know?

Queenbean · 01/10/2015 10:19

I actually heard that your braces caused every earthquake and tsunami to have ever happened. It's because your teeth overlap a la tectonic plates and then moving back has caused all that devastation.

Shame on you. What were you thinking?

KitZacJak · 01/10/2015 10:21

So you choose to spend money on braces and she chooses to spend hers on a fancy wedding but you are in the wrong!!! She sounds bonkers!!! Will she apologise do you think?

Songofsixpence · 01/10/2015 10:24

Your braces? Thank god, I thought it was because of knitting.

I belong to a knitting group and last week one of the members had a big rant at us all sitting around knitting and gossiping while children were dying. The fact that she was also sitting around knitting and gossiping while children were dying seemed to have escaped her.

Were you supposed to be knitting and gossiping about children dying?

Not quite sure what people are expecting you to do differently tbh. Just allows them to show themselves to be judgemental, hypocritical cows.

BYOSnowman · 01/10/2015 11:10

You know what - instead of blaming your braces she should be blaming Donald trumps hair. It is clearly the fault of his hair and the vanity behind it.

Maybe we should start a petition to ban Donald trumps hair

wasonthelist · 01/10/2015 11:16

YANBU OP - I'm getting a bit sick of everything in the world being my fault. I didn't vote for the tossers who started any recent wars, and I campaigned against the Iraq war.

This stuff is a bit like when some ignorant "Irish" Americans tried to hold me personally responsible for the Irish Potato famine - in spite of the fact that my ancestors at the time were illiterate workers with no vote who clearly had zero knowledge or influence over it.

Zucker · 01/10/2015 12:13

Taking against a persons braces is a new one really isn't it. Laughing at her pointing out your western ways though.

Maybe she's thinking of moving to a Lebanese refugee camp to help and this was her subtle way of telling you all.

reni2 · 01/10/2015 12:19

Send her a link to this thread, OP. Profusely apologize for your braces and tell her you thought she'd been ridiculous, but the internet has helped you see how wrong you were and most of mn agrees the world's evils are caused by your teeth.

StayWithMe · 01/10/2015 12:27

What did your DH say afterwards? I'm sure he's ashamed to be married to a woman who has evil braces. Fecking braces causing world problems.

Can you imagine the discussions between yer woman and her DH? "Wtaf was all that about? Are you mad woman?"

OfaFrenchmind2 · 01/10/2015 12:40

One thing for sure. You literally cannot be a bad person if you want Alex O'Laughlin in your bed. You have good taste, this account for a lot.

Prettyeyedpiratesmile · 01/10/2015 12:44

OP she rounds seriously off the wall. I'd be considering reducing contact with her. I can't be bothered with people like taht

BlackeyedSusan · 01/10/2015 13:14

misaligned jaw? you are off the hook op. It is all your parents fault and their faulty genes.

come to think of it.. you know I had braces about the time of the falklands war... shit...

Iliketoparrty · 01/10/2015 13:17

I've told DH the truth, my braces are an evil plan to end the world not just our sex life Wink

Having told folk at work about dinner last night, every time something goes wrong at work, which is often I hear the cry of 'fuck you braces!' Grin

Seriously though DH got a text from BFF apologising for his wife (or Cuntressa as my work mate suggested). Apparently she watched the news yesterday, she got a bit upset. DH asked if she gets upset every time she watches the news and apparently not, she don't watch the news so only just found out about the refugee crisis Shock ahh god love her
