Buyers have already given out our address!

Not sure if I am being unreasonable or not, would like opinions please! I'm a regular lurker and poster but recent NC.

We had a card today addressed to "Emma Smith" (not real name, obvs). We opened it to see if there was a return address inside as there was no return address on the envelope, thinking it was for the previous owner - also called Emma who ran away from mountains of debt and for whom we still receive a lot of post for. Maybe she got married, we thought. Anyway, turns out if was a New Home card for the partner of the person who is buying our house (her name doesn't appear on any of the paperwork). We've not even exchanged yet! Is this not a little presumptuous? Stuff could still fall through? I wouldn't dream of giving out my new address to anyone yet.

Bit cheeky but I don't think it was meant with any harm. Just give the card to the lawyers to handover with a note saying you thought they might want it???

My buyer had her tv, Internet and phone services activated 4 days before completion, subsequently mine got cancelled!!

I know a seller who received a letter for their future buyers with late school application details in it. Funnily enough the school next door was considered one of the best in the county. I wonder if they applied with the address long before the sale was finalised (not sure if that's allowed).

The couple who bought our old flat got all sorts of post delivered, including various legal documents, before our sale was far enough down the line to be considered safe! They were cheeky feckers on a number of levels though!

The people that bought our last house had loads of post delivered before we left, including a large box which was a Nationwide building society movers pack! I just left it all in the basement of the house. Yes I think it was cheeky and annoying.

Don't pass it on to the buyers as I fear he has no idea she intends to move in with him and in his freaked out state he might pull out and run for the hills

We had a sofa and an armchair delivered to ours three weeks before we exchanged! We were meant to exchange earlier but there was a delay higher up in the chain, and the buyer had ordered a new sofa in the meantime. We agreed to take it as didn't want to jeopardise the sale but it was very annoying and weird. She also arranged for broadband to be fitted but we managed to cancel that. In my view it's bonkers to order good / services to a home when you've not even exchanged (personally I wouldn't even do it before completion) but maybe that's just me!

It really depends on circumstances tbh. If you are in the UK then our house buying process is waaaay longer than that of Ireland, Scotland and loads of other EU places. My Irish mil thinks we are moving into our new home within days and we only got offer accepted on 22/9.

Horsey you're telling me it's taking for fucking ever! We accepted the offer on ours at the end of May but there is a short chain. Painful.

That does sound a bit odd.

Although getting post for the buyers isn't always the buyers fault. When we were buying our current house, our solicitors sent several important legal letters relating to the house purchase to the new address.
That was very annoying, having to chase them up for missing letters, to be told that they'd sent them to the house we were trying to buy, and which they should have known damn well that we hadn't completed on yet. Given that we were paying them to handle all the legal house sale stuff.

Post came for the people buying our house too. I was a bit annoyed - it felt that they were staking a claim before they were entitled to. They'd mucked about a bit too, so wasn't best pleased.

Our modem was sent to our new house before we had moved in and our internet line was connected (against our express permission) while we were still waiting for a completion date - it's not always cheeky buyers, sometimes it's stupid companies who act like nobody has ever moved house before.

Can't believe you opened post not addressed to you. The proper way yo handle it is to write 'not known at this address' on the envelope and slip it back into the post box.

When I sold my house the buyer attempted to change the phone line and broadband supplier, electricity supplier and attempted to change all but the council tax into her name. This was 3 weeks after the offer had been accepted and about 6 before we exchanged!

Luckily my phone company wrote to me stating they would cease my service on x date unless told otherwise - I stopped it and told my solicitors and estate agents to tell her to back off or I would pull out rash but was very frustrating and wasted a lot of my time!

Our vendor was pretty quick to put all bills in my name.

I went round before exchange to measure for carpet and was handed a pile of bills.
