To keep these clothes that weren't charged for?

Yesterday I went shopping and picked up a new coat each for the dc (at Matalan if it's relevant)- total cost was £45.

I got to the till, went in my bag and didn't have my purse Angry Blush
So I apologised, said i'd nip home and the man on the till put them behind the counter for me.

Returned a couple of hours later and picked up some packs of pants by the till when I was queuing, which were a fiver. Handed them over and asked for the coats behind the till that had been put by for me (this was a woman). She put everything in a bag for me, I paid with my card and out I went.

Anyway, it's only tonight I've pulled them out of the bag along with the receipt - and I have a receipt for £5.05 (the pants and a 5p bag charge). The coats weren't charged for. I didn't even check the amount at the checkout, just stuck my card in and paid.

WWYD? I feel really guilty even though it wasn't my fault. I don't know if the second person who served me just made a mistake or thought maybe they were already paid for (but why would they be?!). They've not got security tags on so one of them must have taken them off.

So keep and look at it as good luck or be honest and go back and pay for them? Opinion is currently divided in my house!

So again, you paid yet?

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 20:59

No I've not paid yet, and really not decided. My moral compass is stuck on grey. But I will update on here when I do (decide that is) for anyone that is interested.

I don't understand why this even needs a thread. Surely you'd just go back and pay? I was in B&Q recently buying pipe lagging. The cashier scanned one piece, took a quick look in the trolley to see how many pieces and asked me for about €20. I immediately told her to hold on while I took out the €300 worth of sockets etc. that were underneath.
At no stage did I have to think "I'd better ask Mumsnet if I should keep my mouth shut"

PaulAnkaTheDog · 30/09/2015 21:03

Amazing that you're still undecided when the majority have said pay. Especially since you posted for advice. Makes me wonder why you bothered.

You're not going to pay. Everyone knows it. You've got a big thread on mumsnet though, I bet you're loving that. Hence why you're still going.

Thief and attention seeker. Quite the person!

Gileswithachainsaw · 30/09/2015 21:09

you either are honest or you're not.

if you were they'd be nothing to decide.

you are so immune to the right thing to do that even 15 pages of being told yabu hasn't changed your mind.

we cab guess enough from.that

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 21:09

OP, regardless of what you decide to do about the coats, you've really shown your true colours on here and it's nothing to be proud of

Are you still referring to the actual situation? Or my attitude?

I understand that you don't like to be disagreed with but I've remained as polite as possible, piss taking the really stupid posts, whilst being poked with sticks fairly constantly.

Comments include being told that my dh financially abuses me (i'm still a bit sidelined by that one as to how the connection was made), that i'm an awful mother, a disgusting and grubby person with a disgusting attitude. Those are just the ones I remember.

So, no, I don't think it's me that's shown my true colours at all...plenty have though!

OP posts:
Boobz · 30/09/2015 21:14

God you've wound people up somehow here OP!

I'd probably go back I reckon.

HTH.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 30/09/2015 21:18

Nah, she's never going to pay. It'll be a cold day in hell before she does.

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 21:19

Your post made me laugh Boobz!

It's so at odds with the most recent ones...so completely sane and normal and concise it looks out of place! But thank you!

You should really stop trying to imply that people are irrational because they don't agree with your theft. Your attitude is awful. You seem to revel in winding people up, which is sad. Especially since you are doing so over the fact you are unwilling to pay for the clothes that you have effectively stolen. Have some self respect.

Spectre8 · 30/09/2015 21:24

There is no grey area. You either choose to do the right thing or the wrong thing.

TeaPlease that's a really good question.

I think indifferent tbh. The older I get, the less I care what others actually think of me. If I've done something that I feel comfortable with then that's my only concern really.

The only exception being my dc. I wouldn't want them knowing, if I do nothing...but they never will. Which probably makes me a huge hypocrite...but again, being a hypocrite is something I can deal with. My dc possibly overthinking or worrying about something like this is not [awaits backlash on my parenting skills].

I haven't rtft but this happened to me once, I bought loads of stuff from Tesco (clothes) and changed my mind about a coat when I tried it on at home.

When I went back to return it she looked down the receipt and said it wasn't on there, so she could exchange it for something else, but not refund.

I said "ooh it must have been missed off when they put it through the till" and she said she couldn't just take it back without giving me anything in exchange so I should keep it.

I like to think I'm pretty honest and moral, but I give thousands of ££s to Tescos every year and they're not exactly struggling, while I'm a single mum on a low income so sorry, I don't feel bad about it!

Bearbehind · 30/09/2015 21:43

I don't think you'll get too many more replies OP no matter how much you stoke the fire.

You're being deliberately obtuse and provocative and it's very tiring.

No one actually gives a shit what you do.

Many of us just hope you get your comeuppance.

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 21:49

Bearbehind, i'm really not. I've answered every question honestly but you're clearly pissed that you've not had an immediate agreement with your pov from me. I can live with that tbh.

OP posts:
Spectre8 · 30/09/2015 21:53

What was the point of even coming on here and asking when you clearly say you don't really care what people think just go ahead do what you want.

CookieMonsterIsOnADiet · 30/09/2015 22:04

I presume the point was to brag about stealing from a retail chain.

The OP clearly has no intentions of paying for the items so the post is just bragging that she got some coats for free.

Let's hope Karma catches up very soon.

Spectre8 · 30/09/2015 22:08

haha bragging over a few matalan coats, hardly impressive really, now a chanel bag would be more along the lines worth bragging about.

MinecraftWonder · 30/09/2015 22:11

Really Spectre? You're 'Matalan-shaming' me? Dear me.

This post has been my topic of conversation all day. Friends, colleagues, my mum....I'm not being unreasonable when I say I need to get a life Grin

Spectre8 · 30/09/2015 22:23

well just taking your attitude of not giving a shit what you think of what I say really

PaulAnkaTheDog · 30/09/2015 22:31

Shit attitudes, shit morals.

PerfectlyPosed · 30/09/2015 22:37

Am I the only one thinking about the episode of Friends where the bank accidentally puts money in Phoebe's account? "Not, not mine. Not, not mine!"

FWIW I probably wouldn't go back either.
