To never cook for my parents again (lighthearted)

CheesyNachos · 29/09/2015 10:21

Dparents have come to stay for a few days. Yesterday I cooked Nigella's Coq au Riesling, with mashed potatoes, green beans. It was (If I say so myself) delicious.

What did they do? They SMOTHERED (smothered I say!) it with Sweet Chilli Sauce.

Seriously! DFather claims it was 'fusion' cooking.

WIBU to only cook pot noodles from now on?

My father in law puts vinegar on his steak. In public.

Sad
CheesyNachos · 29/09/2015 10:26

Do you mean like malt vinegar?

What if he'd have smothered it in Brown sauce?

I'm not seeing what the problem is.

GloGirl · 29/09/2015 10:36

Yes, proper malt vinegar. Any dinner I'd either covered in vinegar or mint sauce.

GloGirl · 29/09/2015 10:36

""My father in law puts vinegar on his steak. In public.""

I find that the UK until recently, underused vinegar and oils, as condiments and in cooking.

I chould quite happily put vinegar on everything, I'm now Vegan, though.

As long as people are still grateful for your cooking, why is it wrong for them to want to eat it in a way that they will really enjoy it?

NotTodaySatan · 29/09/2015 10:38

My mother adds red chillis, chorizo and multiple heads of garlic to every recipe she ever makes rendering it inedible to everyone but her.

Lasagne
Soup
Pasta

30 years of cigarette deadened taste buds will do that I guess.

Confused
DurhamDurham · 29/09/2015 10:43

My Grandad used to put tomato ketchup on his sunday lunch Confused

Tucktalking · 29/09/2015 10:45

You did worse things to them when you were a baby and they put up with you and still loved you and fed you and brought you up.

So what if they did that and they are over only for a few days. Lets be kind to our parents while they are still alive. ASk those with no parents how they wish that they may have treated them better while they were still there.

How else can you ever thank your parents for the wonderful gift of life that they have given to you?

Dotty342kids · 29/09/2015 10:45

My DH salts everything, before it gets as far as his mouth. Drives me scatty! I blame his mother, who uses lots of salt in her cookery.... Smile

NoahVale · 29/09/2015 10:46

CheesyNachos · 29/09/2015 10:46

Op, you forgot to HIDE the sweet chilli sauce!

I've done things like that with DH and he's wanted to add sweet chilli sauce and I've just said 'don't you dare'. He tries to add sweet and spicy chilli to everything.

I still remember cooking a soy based noodle dish years ago, and telling my MIL how fed up I was of sweet chilli everything. During dinner DH said 'This would be really nice with some chilli sauce in it'. His Mother burst out laughing, and said 'be careful boy!'. Followed by 'See?! Told you!!!' from me.

to be fair..... DMum has just reminded me I used to eat my scrambled eggs with ketchup.

I've said before on here, my partner puts ketchup on everything. Including his Christmas dinner. We don't go out to eat in 'naice' places, really don't think I could deal with that situation of him asking for a 'bottle of red', and well.... Blush.

SiobhanSharpe · 29/09/2015 10:52

Scrambled eggs with kethup??? No, no, my dear, you need truffle oil.
Actually, it would have been quite nice over the chicken, too

BetLynchsBeehive · 29/09/2015 11:01

I'll defend vinegar on a steak. I think beef often does well with a bit of vinegar. I love a Bearnaise sauce precisely for this reason!

NoahVale · 29/09/2015 11:02

I did use to put ketchup on home made fish pie, and on mash, to make it change colour, but i was a child

Lightbulbon · 29/09/2015 11:04

My DPs don't even know what sweet chilli sauce is!

ExitPursuedByABear · 29/09/2015 11:11

My brother puts Piri Piri sauce on everything, including my exquisite and very expensive to make Fish Pie.

Sigh

And DH is pretty lavish with the Brown Sauce, and DD puts Ketchup on my beautifully prepared poached eggs.

Feckin heathens.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 29/09/2015 11:19

DH is an autocondimenter - he puts extra salt on everything before he's tasted it. This annoys me. I don't OVER-salt food, but I do add some - just enough to make it taste nice - and we have 2 small boys, so they don't need lots of salt. But he just adds more anyway. His tastebuds must have burnt off or something.

At least he doesn't pour brown or red sauce on everything though. Wink

CheesyNachos · 29/09/2015 11:38

DH has just pointed out that I cook spinach and ricotta tortellini in chicken stock broth (tortellini en brodo anyone?) and then add soy and sweet chilli to make it like a Chinese wonton soup.

[head. desk].

Can hardly have a moral highground then can I?

I can be a bit free with the balsamic syrup as well.

LaContessaDiPlump · 29/09/2015 11:55

Dh adds mayo to everything. It's awful.
