To have been underwhelmed by the 'super' moon?

kinkytoes · 28/09/2015 22:07

I'm in the south east and had a good view, no clouds etc. I was up in the night to see it all happen. It was the same size it always is, and a murky sort of brown rather than red.

I know it's an amazing thing to be able to witness, but what a disappointment after all the hype!

I'm sure people's cameras are making it look much more impressive than it actually was.

Just me?

I'm sure I've seen one before

SleepyForest · 28/09/2015 22:14

I loved it and thought it was truly awe inspiring. Perhaps you thought it would look like the photos?

Racundra · 28/09/2015 22:16

It was really read at 7:30 this evening. Hung low on the horizon before it rose properly. It was amazing.

Racundra · 28/09/2015 22:16

*red not read, obviously!

Thebookswereherfriends · 28/09/2015 22:16

I have to say I was more impressed by the abundance of stars - we live quite rurally and I don't often go out and look, but it was so clear it was truly spectacular. The moon was merely interesting because it was a different colour!

SwedishEdith · 28/09/2015 22:19

I've definitely seen red moons before. I think I read that the last time this happened was 1982 which would be about right.

feebeecat · 28/09/2015 22:19

Swedish I'm sure I've seen one before too. Few weeks ago, in Wales. Maybe I was looking at something else Confused

MelanieCheeks · 28/09/2015 22:20

I've seen one before, and therefore was expecting it to be that copper penny colour, rather than bright red. I did involuntarily go "wow!" When I went outside at 2.20, and the big bright moon I'd seen before bedtime was now a bright Cheshire Cat sliver. I continued to wow at the the knowledge of what was causing this, and loved seeing the silver white crescent disappear at the edge. And the stars I could then see!

I think expectations affected people's reactions.

Nope. This was the 4th "blood moon" of the year. It was also the first full moon after the autumn equinox ("harvest moon") and closer to the earth than usual ("super moon"). And then there was an eclipse too.

AnyFucker · 29/09/2015 00:07

If you are underwhelmed by the spectacle in the sky over the last couple of days, then you are underwhelmed by life Sad

sproketmx · 29/09/2015 00:08

I didn't even see it. Usually I can see the moon quite good too

Geez I guess I must be underwhelmed at life too as I found it a bit meh. I liked the big bright moon and I liked the start of the eclipse but the red was dissapiinting as was the size. Be seen bigger and better Wink
We went to the beach to watch it so I enjoyed the whole 'event' but the moon was underwhelming.
We watch the persieds (sorry can't spell - the shootings stars) every year when the sky is clear. I think they are more impressive.

trollkonor · 29/09/2015 07:00

Also in the SE and whilst it was very bright I was expecting it to look much bigger. I did enjoy watching the eclipse and took some pretty good photos but only because I have a good zoom.

Bunbaker · 29/09/2015 07:04

By the time of the eclipse the moon was a normal size. I felt very privileged to be able to witness it. I was also fortunate enough to see the solar eclipse earlier this year (we had 90% coverage in South Yorkshire).

I find natural phenomena like this awe inspiring.

MinecraftWonder · 29/09/2015 07:06

We set our alarm for 3.45am, when it was at the maximum in our area.

I wouldn't say I was overwhelmed, but it was a bit eerie...although like others have said, it was much more of a cloudy brown colour rather than red.

Ds1 (age 7, insisted on being woken) was fairly awe-struck though.

seagreengirl · 29/09/2015 07:34

The moon was absolutely massive earlier in the evening, in London when I went out at about 8 o,clock, and blindingly bright. By 3 am it was normal sized and a dullish rust colour.

noblegiraffe · 29/09/2015 07:35

I got up at 3:45 to see the eclipse and the moon was tiny and just looked a bit dark (not red). The stars looked amazing though, especially as the street lights were off.

I got up again at 4:30 to look, and the moon looked much more interesting with the sliver of silver as it emerged again.

I think if you just saw the total eclipse, it didn't have any context and didn't look impressive, and it was probably better if you watched the whole thing.

DisappointedOne · 29/09/2015 07:46

They are less impressive each year - as the cluster spreads out fewer and free are seen. 20 years ago they were amazing. Now I don't even bother.

EponasWildDaughter · 29/09/2015 07:46

The best moon i've seen was in Dorset, when i was around 9 or 10; so late '70s. It was jaw dropping and i've never forgotten it. Truly enormous and pale orange; hanging over the sea but so big it looked as if you could reach up and touch it. My Dad called it a 'harvest' moon.

I happened to go to the loo at about 3am Mon night and looked out and saw the red moon. It was blood red but usual size. DH even dragged himself out of bed and had a look too. We're lucky enough to live somewhere without much light pollution and the stars have been particularly fantastic the last few nights. Wonderful.

diddl · 29/09/2015 07:58

I thought that the eclipse was fab, although the moon didn't look bigger to me.

But when I took the dog out Saturday at about nine, it looked huge & was very low.

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 29/09/2015 07:58

I reckon you missed it. Me and ds were walking up a big hill to the shop on Sunday evening and as we got further up an absolutely enormous moon appeared at the top. We both just stood staring after ds shouted about it! It did appear smaller the further up we got though, but it was awesome when it first appeared.

Ds thinks Gru made it so big Grin

chrome100 · 29/09/2015 10:34

I thought I'd seen one before too. I did not get up for it as I have to be up at 5 for work anyway. I poked my head out of the front door but it was far too foggy to even see my car never mind the moon.

lorelei9 · 29/09/2015 10:38

AnyFucker "If you are underwhelmed by the spectacle in the sky over the last couple of days, then you are underwhelmed by life"

well, I'm hugely underwhelmed by life, no idea what the fuss is about.

but the moon....I wasn't awake for the colour change, but more for that later part with the shadow which was really impressive here. Perhaps it depends on the area you live in, how clear the sky was etc etc. I am a terrible sleeper or I'd have nipped out and got some photos, but I knew I'd never get back to sleep if I tried that.

I don't know how "red" it looked from here though, all the neighbours seems to have seen it at the same time as me.

funny thing though - I saw one chap leave his house and not even turn to look at it. I would have thought the pool of light would naturally lead him to look but apparently not.

then again, if I had to get up that early for work, I'm not sure how much I'd notice either Grin

GloGirl · 29/09/2015 10:40

I thought it was amazing although I was very tired. I love looking up at the stars and thinking that is really the only thing I have in common with my ancestors for thousands and thousands of years.

Looking up in wonder. I look up and instantly I imagine the wars and the huge decisions that would have been taken.
