To have been underwhelmed by the 'super' moon?

I'm in the south east and had a good view, no clouds etc. I was up in the night to see it all happen. It was the same size it always is, and a murky sort of brown rather than red.

I know it's an amazing thing to be able to witness, but what a disappointment after all the hype!

I'm sure people's cameras are making it look much more impressive than it actually was.

Just me?

Disappointed thank you! Dh was insistent I was making it up. I've been trying to figure what the big orangey-red thing that appeared from behind the mountain - at night - was Grin

He knows I have an appalling memory, but even I didn't think I was 30 odd years out!!

I saw it earlier in the evening on Monday & it was huge, much smaller and red by 3am. Always impressive though.

I always feel sad when people are underwhelmed by space, no matter how small. I tried to talk to multiple people today about Mars and they were just "meh... so?" I find anything outside of earth just amazing when you really think about it.

But still... YANBU because that's how you feel about it. Nothing wrong with that.

I'm with Thebooks. I live rurally and we have the most amazing skies. I am constantly tripping over things as I crane my head upwards walking back to my house from my train.

It's beautiful and awesome. Stars are way better than moons. Plus, it was a bit hazy on the lunar eclipse so it didn't look as good for me as perhaps for some of you.

I was completely down with the solar eclipse this year. A real sense of cosmic movement. This, less so.

Oh don't get me wrong. I am fascinated by the night sky and wish I had more time to enjoy and study it. Just think it was so hyped up on this occasion that I was expecting so much more from it.

I saw the build up where the shadow started to fall across the moon and I think I was more impressed by that tbh. Maybe it's the part of the world I live in but I've never seen the moon look any bigger than it usually does (or maybe my timing is just always wrong!)

Neil deGrasse Tyson agrees with you.

I must have missed the big moon phase, when I looked out it was very very bright but normal sized I was expecting it to look much bigger. I have seen the huge moon effect before and it was awesome. I too got excited by the previous pictures and was expecting it to be really bright red so was slightly disappointed to realise that it only changed colour when the eclipse started
(didn't think too cleverly about what caused it at first so was expecting red moon earlier, foolish me Smile) watching it change was really good especially as DS2 away at Uni was watching too and we kept texting each other with updates, pretty awe inspiring to be witnessing something that won't happen again until 2033 DH was away and did not get up and DS1 was a bit drunk after a friends birthday night out so was in bed and missed it, they are both a bit jealous that me and DS2 saw it happen.

Mysillydog · 29/09/2015 15:21

AFAIK the effect of the really large moon was most marked earlier in the evening when it was closest to the horizon. At 3 am when the actual eclipse was, the moon was high and so didn't appear really big.

I didn't see the super moon but dh did (total astro geek) and said it was one of the best observing sessions he has ever done. Dd2 was gutted not to have seen it, but it was a bit much for her to have gone with dh on school night - he was out for 3 hours.

I went outside at 3.45am and although I wasn't overwhelmed by the moon, I have never ever ever seen stars like it. We have no light pollution which helps.

Normally it is one-dimensional - just black sky with twinkly stars. This night it was completely and utterly awe inspiring - three-dimensional close stars, medium range stars, long distance stars, just a huge blanket of the most unbelievable twinkling lights, the sky was just beautiful. If it hadn't been cold, I would have liked to lie down and look at them for the rest of the night. This might sound a bit OTT, but I will never forget the view I had of those stars because I have never seen the sky like that, and presume it was because of the red moon.

Helloitsme15 · 29/09/2015 16:00

Agree - was totally underwhelmed. I set the alarm for the middle of the night and was going to wake up Dcs and DH, but when I saw it I decided not to bother and went back to bed.

ThatsNotMyRabbit · 29/09/2015 16:05

Can I ask a really stupid moon related question?

You know in movies like ET and lots of other similar es based in the USA.... does the moon really look that big or is it artistic license?

Helloitsme15 · 29/09/2015 16:13

Artistic license, I think.

DisappointedOne · 29/09/2015 16:21

Yep. There's an episode of Infinite Monkey Cage about it.

kinkytoes · 30/09/2015 06:39

Roussette that's lovely Smile

Well I'm glad I wasn't the only one. So the large moon and the red moon happened at different times. Wish I'd known beforehand. Ah well.

Well, I was impressed. It was different from normal, and that was enough for me. It also gave out an amazing extra amount of light, and I found that very unusual. I kind of wish it was like that all the time.
