AIBU?

AIBU one year olds having happy meals

Somebody on my Facebook posted that their one year old was having their first happy meal. Which I suppose is not great for a one year old but I don't know the circumstances and I'm a new parent so not my place to judge. I haven't been in her position.
Just wondering would you give a baby that age a happy meal?
And AIBU for finding it a bit odd? I hadn't really considered them eating them before.

My 1yo had one recently and i pre licked every chip to get the salt off (not pfb). Preferred that to my actual chips. Everyone's a winner Grin

Greenrug, you can ask them to just give you salt free chips when you order! Will save you a lot of trouble Grin

My DDs (nearly 4 and 18mo) occasionally have a Mac Donald's (every 2 months or so), they have fish fingers, chips without salt, water/milk/OJ and a fruit bag. If DD1 asks she can have a ice cream. Occasionally DD1 will want a burger, which I ask for unseasasoned.

They eat home cooked food the majority of the time, so I don't think the occasional Mac Donald's - as long as you make sure it doesn't have the added salt - is the end of the world.

You need to stop obsessing over what others put on FB.

My youngest probably had her first McDonald's before her second birthday. We end up there 6-8 times a year, don't think I'm doing them too much harm!

Even drinking too much water can kill you.

Exactly

Aren't the chips covered in salt?! That fake cheese? And god knows what's in the meat.

I wouldn't.

I didn't know they did unsalted chips . It's good they have al the other drins options now too rather than just fizzy or milkshake

I wouldn't have given a McDonald's to DD when she was 1. I don't like it much myself tbh. Now she is 4 and has had 2 Happy Meals in her life, once when we were travelling and once when I was ill and DH didn't fancy cooking so took her there instead. Both times it was really just for convenience.

I don't think I am depriving her of anything, as to me it really isn't a treat at all. I make nuggets at home occasionally (from scratch) and we regularly bake together (and eat the results), so she isn't exactly raised on steamed broccoli alone.

It's the processed aspect of it I don't like.

This being said, the occasional Happy Meal never killed anyone

We were stuck in the middle of nowhere recently and randomly came across a McDonalds. It was quite odd because it was beside a Pizza Hut and a KFC which all looked like they had landed from Mars

I have a 1 and a 2 year old and am very sniffy about McDonalds. But it was the only option and I was actually fairly impressed. Firstly, it was very clean.

Secondly the DC likes the fruit bags and shared a chicken wrap that didn't have any coating in the chicken. They also had water and I honestly don't think it was a worse meal than if they had had an M&S sandwich and some fruit. The staff also very kindly gave them happy meal toys even though they didn't have happy meals and s balloon each

I had a chicken salad thing and it was fine too and the coffee was excellent.

I was impressed at the choice on the menu. DH had an enormous burger from some special limited edition thing with chips but there was plenty of stuff to chose that was pretty healthy. If I had known there was salt free chips, I would have got some for DD - who is 1 and loves chips! DS doesn't like them odd child!

My dad used to take us for maccies breakfast every Sunday from the age of about 2-8 years old...
I'm the biggest of my three sibling and my bmi is 20... So obviously it's turned me into an obese heifer.

I was going to say I'd be worried about the salt but both my parents put so much salt on everything they cooked maccies is probably a better option!

I just can't get worked up over macdonalds we go 3-4 times a year and DS1 has fish fingers, salt free chips and a fruit bag with milk. In fact we are planing to go today and I was going to take food for my 15 month old but I may actually let him have a few chips today

I stopped at a service station recently and my 1 year old had a few chicken nuggets and fries.

You're being ridiculous if you think that represents what he eats on a daily basis.

I wouldn't give my son anything I wouldn't eat myself. We don't eat Mc Donalds ourselves because it is pure cr*p! I think it is more of a treat to look after their tiny little bodies.

*beautygal29" so is all your food wholesome and pure? You never eat cakes? Nothing sugary? Nothing too fatty?

You never eat olives or honey or brie?

My DS is almost 3 and has never had a McDs, Burger King, KFC etc - simply because it's shite food and I'd never eat there myself. Certainly wouldn't go there especially for him either.

That said, I wouldn't be judging what other people do, as I'm no perfect parent myself. For all you know, the child you're referring to eats quinoa and lentils the rest of the time and the happy meal was a one-off.

Agreed. We sometimes have a KFC. I have taken my one year old to MacDonalds.

These meals are not representative of my family's diet at all. The OP needs to loosen up.

I wasn't allowed mcdonalds growing up and still got to twenty stone in my mid twenties.

I occasionally have them now even though I am now 10 stone.

Tbh I think the outrage about McDonald's is quite funny. Like 'the whole class is overweight apart from the two that were not allowed mcdonalds...I can't see any other reason for it' it's ridiculous.

You can not possibly have any idea what an entire class eats day in and day out to make that judgment. Eating McDonald's doesn't make anyone fat by itself, eaten occasionally.

It's not best food and should be eaten everyday. But it's by far not the worst food. People feed their kids stuff far worse food than McDonald's everyday and it's seen as ok.

My one year old has had Mcdonalds - well, she's nearly two. It's just food. It's not every day, or even every month!

Besides which there are better, more baby-friendly options available in happy meals. DD has the fish fingers (which are probably deep-fried but whatever) half of the bag of chips and water. So 'happy meal' could mean anything.

I don't give two hoots about the odd McDonalds - our DC have had the occasional happy meal.

However, posting about their first one on FB like it's some sort of rite of passage, that Other People give a shit about?! I've heard everything now.

Would you feed your child chicken nuggets or fish fingers at home? If so what's the difference occasionally?

Report

My friend was boasting that her 2 year old had eaten a whole jar of olives.

The salt contend of that snack must be mind blowing.

Apparently it's OK because it's middle class food though.

In fact OH and I are just off to Macdonalds' this morning for a bacon roll and coffee. We will sneak out as the kids are still asleep and hopefully won't notice we have gone.
