I had just popped into the supermarket today with my two DC. My DD opened her car door into a vacant parked car next to us causing a small ding (size of a one pence piece). I didn't have a pen so we went into the shop. When we returned to the car a short time later to leave a note on the windscreen it had gone. As i had the children back in the car I drove home and immediately called the supermarket and reported it leaving my contact details. AIBU to think i have done all i can? Sad

Reporting to police within a certain time frame or 'when reasonably practicable' only counts for RTC's, which this wasn't. It also wouldn't count as crim dam, it was an accident. You took reasonable steps in going into the shop to leave your details. You could call 101 and explain and leave your details, so if the owner does report to them they can pass your details on to the owner.

Threads like this always make me a bit confused as if damage to cars is just a hazard of owning one and you should just suck it up.

Not something people should suck up per say. Just something that happens when you own a car.

Dings are part of the risk of parking in a lot. Just like scraping your knee is part of the risk of riding a bike. Shit happens.

It's not pleasant, and it's irritating, but given the circumstances, it's not something to get worked up about either. There's not much you can do. Insurance won't cover it, and it's not worth the money to pay out of pocket to fix.

What would you have OP do? In reality, it wasn't a collision, so her insurance would be like "So?" the owner's insurance would be like "So?". There's not much that would have come of it anyway unless the owner chose to pay for the dent repair himself, in which case he didn't need her info to do so.

On principle, I'm sure it's irritating to have your car dented and have the person run. In reality, nothing would be done about it anyway.

My Dad accidentally did this in an Asda car park, and he was unwell at the time and panicked and drove away (this was very odd behaviour for him and I have to say in his defence he was depressed at the time - please don't flame him.) He went back but the car had gone and he did get contacted by the police Blush so it does happen.

Just to update you all, i called the police first thing this morning and reported the incident and left my details. So the dinged car's owner has a good chance of getting hold of me and i can give them insurance details. The police said not to worry and the incident was logged.

No. For christ's sake. If you own a car, nice or not, you do not have to 'suck up' other people being careless twats and damaging it.

This makes me properly cross on MN, that it should be fine for you to damage someone else's car and say 'oh, sorry, it was an accident' then get upset if you have to pay for the damage.

If you damage someone else's property, you make 100% sure they can contact you if they need a repair. You don't just shrug and say 'sorry, no pen or paper' and try to pretend to yourself that everyone who owns a car doesn't mind the odd dent.

Sorry OP, forgot to add on to my post that you did the right thing. :)

Someone with a brand new Merc might not be so relaxed about it

Someone who can afford a brand new Merc presumably can afford the repairs associated with it. And if they can't they should stop wearing fur coats and get some decent knickers.

carmugz · 22/09/2015 21:42

Its interesting to rad that some of you do sort out dents/dings - maybe that explains why i see some immaculate 7+ year old cars or else they've been lucky not to get dented!
I cried when my beautiful car got its first dent.

Oh do F*ck Off!! Are you this silly, envious twat??

Wanker Scratches Aston Martin

I've got no time for scummers with absolutely no respect for other people's property. Luckily, the knowledge that I'm unlikely to meet any of them unless my satnav sends me to "Scumtown" keeps my blood pressure down...

my parents have had their new car for only 1 month when someone left a long scratch down the passenger window in a car park...they worked hard to save up for that car and yes whilst they have money they would rather spend it paying the mot/tax or whatever else then repairing a window that is now damaged through no fault of there own.

PiperIsTerrysChoclateOrange · 23/09/2015 00:42

I care about my car, it's serviced every year and I clean and polish the body work regularly.

I would be very annoyed if nobody left details.

It's not just the dent but as the paint would be stripped off its more prone to rust.

I would get it repaired as it effects the resale value.

My last car got hit very bad and I lost a huge chunk of money when we sold it because of the damage.
