Yes I would.

Twickerhun · 20/09/2015 15:03

I would. If it doesn't smell or look off. Should you? No idea!

abigamarone · 20/09/2015 15:03

Do the sniff test

OneBreathAfterAnother · 20/09/2015 15:03

Smell it. You'll know if you should (Or want to!) after that.

AutumnAttic · 20/09/2015 15:03

I'd give it the sniff test. Highly likely it's OK. Make sure it's cooked through

Glassofwineneeded · 20/09/2015 15:04

Go for it!

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 20/09/2015 15:04

Yes, if it's still mostly red and if it doesn't smell sickly sweet, then yes I would. Even if it has some browning bits, still not an issue for me.

nicestrongtea · 20/09/2015 15:05

Nope!
Mind you I buy frozen mince now- its half the price and you can cook from frozen.

emwithme · 20/09/2015 15:05

Does it smell OK? Is it a funny colour? Is the packaging blown out or sucked in?

(If the answers are yes, no and no, in that order, I'd give it a go)

XiCi · 20/09/2015 15:08

I always go by the sniff test

riverboat1 · 20/09/2015 15:09

I definitely would.

Even if it smells a bit, just cook it thoroughly and it will be fine.

It's only one day out of date and supermarkets always err on the side of caution.

YellowJerseyPan · 20/09/2015 15:10

Leave it out for a couple of days more, somewhere near a radiator or a cooker, and that will enhance the flavour massively. Today is too early. Bit longer needed.

yorkshapudding · 20/09/2015 15:10

I probably would as long as it looked and smelled ok but would perhaps cook if for a bit longer than normal to make sure it was definitely cooked through. If it looked a bit discolored I would bin it though.

nicestrongtea, never thought of buying frozen mince, does it taste as nice?

riverboat1 · 20/09/2015 15:11

BTW, part of my basis for saying the above is a TV programme I watched where they lab tested significantly out of date meat where it was whiffy and the packaging had puffed up, and showed that after thorough cooking it was still safe for consumption.

BitterAndOnlySlightlyTwisted · 20/09/2015 15:11

The actual date on the package is far less important that what's happened to it since you bought it. Presumably it was chilled at the point of purchase, so if it's been adequately chilled since you got it home it should be perfectly safe. Food retailers include quite a wide margin when dating food as "use before".

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 20/09/2015 15:13

I'm joining in with the 'Yes' chorus - as long as it looks and smells OK, and you aren't planning to use it for steak tartare.

TheoriginalLEM · 20/09/2015 15:17

Shepherds pie it is then :)

"Mind you I buy frozen mince now- its half the price and you can cook from frozen."

That's because a higher percentage of it is water, have you not noticed how much it shrinks when you cook it?

AutumnAnne · 20/09/2015 15:24

I buy my meat "reduced to clear" on the sell by date. I put anything we're going to eat the next day in the fridge and freeze the rest. I've not had any problems.

nicestrongtea · 20/09/2015 15:25

No it doesn't - its actually really nice. Sainsburys

limitedperiodonly · 20/09/2015 16:53

I can vouch for nicestrongtea's Sainsbury's frozen mince too. Really good price and I don't find it shrinks or tastes any different to their fresh mince. It tastes better than the Basics stuff.

I also buy meat reduced on its last day to freeze like AutumnAnne. Today was a bit poor but I got a veal rib chop down from £9.18 Shock to £6.14 - very expensive, but a lovely treat. It's big but will only do for one person, but I have another one lurking in the freezer.

That day was much better - I got two packs of 10 Taste the Difference sausages for a total of £4, six veal sirloin steaks for just over £12, three veal escalopes for £4.99 and the other veal chop for £5.80.

I have turned into a reduced sticker queen like my mother Grin I have to stop myself buying stuff because I have at least three months' worth of really nice meat in the freezer.

Tonight's dinner is two beautiful reduced rump steaks from the freezer with just a baked potato and grilled tomato and mushrooms.

I don't understand why more people don't buy it. Today someone ignored the veal chop and chose a full price one.

DramaAlpaca · 20/09/2015 16:56

As almost everyone else has said, as long as it smells OK it'll be safe to eat. I would eat it.

limitedperiodonly · 20/09/2015 16:58

In case you're wondering about how I know the prices - I keep the receipts in date order and cross things off as I use them. Otherwise I'd have no idea what I had in the freezer and when to use it up.

WaggleBee · 20/09/2015 17:00

Limited I'm in awe of your reduced sticker skills. I can never get through the barricade of strategically placed baskets and elbows. Grin Our's doesn't have things as nice as your's either.

Thirding that frozen mince is fine. I often but two packets and freeze one and they taste exactly the same. Just remember to use it within a month.

WaggleBee · 20/09/2015 17:02

Shock You're the shopping queen! Do you have any more tips? I'm on a mission to be more organised.

Sorry for detour OP.
