To think the fish should be battered and ready to go

Chippy tea for dinner tonight

Get to the chippy some 30mins after it opens and ask for haddock and chips...

"Yeah, it'll be 10 minutes for the Haddock is that ok?"

Hmmm.... no, not really. You've been open 30 minutes and there is no battered fish left? And its going to take 10 minutes to fry some more? (How big is this piece of fish???)

Now, later on in the evening i can understand cooking fish to order in case it doesnt get sold, but AIBU to think that if you run a chip shop, the fish should be battered and waiting to go 30 minutes after you've opened?

(By the way, this normally wouldnt bother me as much, but im hungry and im a right mardy bitch when im hungry Grin )

I like mine freshly battered (mainly as I had food poisoning from fish that had been hanging around since lunchtime)

FlyingGoose · 19/09/2015 18:37

I always ask for freshly battered fish.

LifeIsChaos · 19/09/2015 18:37

I prefer my fish freshly battered and cooked. Would rather wait than have overdone fish from the heater or underdone because they rushed.

PrimalLass · 19/09/2015 18:38

I'd much rather wait as the stuff that has been sitting around is chewy and minging.

BackforGood · 19/09/2015 18:38

No. YANBU, unless you followed someone wno just picked up a mass order for a party i suppose

LittleMiss77 · 19/09/2015 18:39

I should point out that i dont literally mean that the fish should have been hanging about for 30mins or so... but that maybe you batter say 5 pieces and when you get down to 2 you put more in the fryer...

Fish is always to order round here, you shout your order as you go in and take your place in the queue

isseywithcats · 19/09/2015 18:44

YABU ten minutes is nothing to wait for a nice crisp freshly cooked piece of fish would take you a lot longer to cook at home and wouldnt taste like proper chippy fish i hope your chips were freshly cooked as well cos chips straight out the fryer are the best

GraciesMansion · 19/09/2015 18:45

Haddock is always to order here, you shout over as you come in the door and join the queue. Cod however is always ready and waiting.

wowfudge · 19/09/2015 18:50

You have to queue out the door at our local chippy and sometimes have to wait for chips too - much nicer freshly made then kept warm for ages.

Ragwort · 19/09/2015 18:54

I hate getting fish that has been already cooked - I would always prefer to wait 10-15 mins for freshly cooked.

We usually phone our order through to our local chippy - it's outstanding Grin - wish I wasn't being so strict on my diet. Sad

BoneyBackJefferson · 19/09/2015 19:03

Always to order here.

TheBunnyOfDoom · 19/09/2015 19:04

Always to order here, too. I'd always want it freshly done anyway.

wonkywheel · 19/09/2015 19:06

This is why chippies should always be next to a corner shop - you order for fresh battering and cooking, nip next door to pick up an after dinner bar of Galaxy and maybe a bottle of wine, then back in time for hot food :D lovely!

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2015 19:06

Fish is horrible when it's not freshly cooked. I expect to wait.

arethereanyleftatall · 19/09/2015 19:07

Yabu.
I would have thought everyone would prefer freshly made fish.
Decent fish shop = you wait.
Shit fish shop = you don't.

TheSpectator · 19/09/2015 19:08

YABU - I always choose a fish which is cooked to order. If you don't want to wait I suggest you cook it yourself.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/09/2015 19:08

we make a 25 mile round trip to get fish and chips because DD needs gluten free. ALL their fish is cooked to order and boy, it is SO much nicer than the soggy stuff thats been hangng about that some chippys serve.

I've also found that there is a regional variation in whether standard fish and chips is cod or haddock, with the other usually available but a special order ie not ready and waiting like the OP wants.

Misnomer · 19/09/2015 19:10

YABU. It's much better waiting ten minutes for a freshly cooked piece of fish then not having to wait because the fish was cooked 10 minutes or more ago. The batter doesn't stay nice and crisp for long and the slightly older stuff is not good.

Dizzywizz · 19/09/2015 19:11

Here the cod is ready, but haddock always cooked to order

SquareStarfish · 19/09/2015 19:13

When I worked in a chippy cod, chips, sausages, fishcakes and pies were ready but any other fish and bits like chicken nuggets, garlic mushrooms etc were cooked to order. Regulars knew to shout to the fryer on arrival as they joined the queue.

Dizzywizz · 19/09/2015 19:18

Dh worked in a chippy and he said it is because haddock is less popular

MissFitt68 · 19/09/2015 19:18

Isn't it standard to cook haddock to order?

Cod is different but haddock has always been to order wherever I've lived

MamaLazarou · 19/09/2015 19:20

YABU - it's only ten minutes.

Floralnomad · 19/09/2015 19:24

YABU , most chip shops only pre cook the cod because that is what most people want , all the other varieties are cooked to order . If you don't want to wait when you get there you need to ring and order it first so that they can cook it whilst you get there .
