To think the fish should be battered and ready to go

Chippy tea for dinner tonight

Get to the chippy some 30mins after it opens and ask for haddock and chips...

"Yeah, it'll be 10 minutes for the Haddock is that ok?"

Hmmm.... no, not really. You've been open 30 minutes and there is no battered fish left? And its going to take 10 minutes to fry some more? (How big is this piece of fish???)

Now, later on in the evening i can understand cooking fish to order in case it doesnt get sold, but AIBU to think that if you run a chip shop, the fish should be battered and waiting to go 30 minutes after you've opened?

(By the way, this normally wouldnt bother me as much, but im hungry and im a right mardy bitch when im hungry Grin )

I worked in a chippy as a teen, the haddock was cooked to order then.

We've lived all over the country since we've been married and have always had to order haddock if we want. It's a less popular fish.

Artandco · 19/09/2015 19:29

Erm no. I wouldn't want it sitting around under a warmer, it's goes soggy. 10 mins for fresh fish is fine, it's quick enough

ThatsNotEvenAWord · 19/09/2015 19:30

YABU because now I really want a chippy

We only ever get chips from a chippy as vegetarians so a lazy tea is to bung some veggies sausages under the grill and go to get chips while they cook. However, I've stopped going to the chippy which has a habit of waiting until I have paid and then revealing that they don't even have any chips ready to go and I have to wait (and the chips are then anaemically underdone) - obviously freshness is good but so is swiftness! Other nearby chippies manage to have good fresh hot chips ready to serve the instant I ask for them.

PHANTOMnamechanger · 19/09/2015 19:40

plenty of yorkshire chippies have haddock as the standard IME

...and proper beef dripping for the frying - out of this world for flavour and crispness.

Hungry now LOL!

Oysterbabe · 19/09/2015 19:45

I worked in a chippy as a teen and we used beef dripping in the fryer too. Are you sure those chips are veggie Fishwithabicycle? We used to sell veggie burgers too, cooked in beef dripping with everything else.

eurochick · 19/09/2015 20:36

I'd much rather have it cooked to order. It only takes 10 minutes.

ouryve · 19/09/2015 20:46

In most places, haddock is the one you need to shout to the fryer to put in when you join the queue because everyone wants cod.

I much prefer haddock to cod, but accept that means I'll need to wait if I want freshly cooked fish.

DoctorTwo · 19/09/2015 21:07

YABU! My current local chipper cooks all fish fresh to order and whether it's Cod, Haddock, Rock or whatever means it tastes fresher and the batter is crisper. They cook the chips in tiny batches also that only serve at most half a dozen portions. They're the only place that make new potato chips palatable.

cashewnutty · 19/09/2015 21:14

I live near an award winning chippy and they always cook your fish to order. It is the only way to get a fresh crispy delicious fish supper.

jusdepamplemousse · 20/09/2015 09:27

We recently 'changed' chippies as we moved house. The new place cooks everything to order - everything - and first time I was Hmm at the waiting but what a difference. Delicious, so much fresher and crispier. Hard work now to restrain DH and remind him that it has to stay a twice a year sort of thing.

SouthAmericanCuisine · 20/09/2015 09:31

Battered fish doesn't hot hold well - not only does the quality of fish and batter deteriorate, but it inevitably increases the risk of food borne contamination.

By all means pick a chippy that hot holds rather than cooks to order, but be aware that the fish won't be as good quality when you eat it, and the risk of food borne illness is marginally increased.

Crazypetlady · 20/09/2015 11:12

Yabu fish is so much better fresh goes soggy otherwise.

One of our local chip shops though has gorgeous fish but excruciatingly slow service. I have waited fourty minutes before on a lunch break couldn't go anywhere else because spent so much time waiting. 10 minutes isn't too lo g to wait imo.

jorahmormont · 20/09/2015 11:25

Haddock has always been to order everywhere I've known and worked.

ArendelleQueen · 20/09/2015 11:32

YABU, I'd rather wait for fresh fish. Btw YABVVVVVU for making me crave fish and chips at 11.30 am. Shock

Fizzielove · 20/09/2015 12:21

Try phoning in ur order and then when you arrive it's ready to go! No waiting! Problem sorted ??
