To not want my DD doing PE in torrential rain!

DD is in year 6 and yesterday they did PE in the rain. Now i have no problem with her doing PE in the rain but this was ridiculous. She had a waterproof coat on (not a pe coat, big heavy coat) which was soaked through and i could wring her PE kit out that she had to bring home to be washed because it was so wet!

Now she is on the sofa with a stinking cold - now i know she didn't get the cold because of the rain but she started sniffling last night so i am pretty sure it hasn't helped.

Her teacher (who thankfully she only has for PE) made a big thing of telling them they would do PE in all weathers but this was ridiculous.

I got caught out in it yesterday too, but i was able to come home and have a warm shower straight away and dry off, not sit in my fucking wet vest and pants.

No point in complaining teacher is an arrogant twat so ranting on here instead.

not really specialised PE teacher but sort of. He should have made a better decision than he did. I don't like him much and that may be clouding my judgement. Lets just say he likes to show off.

YANBU.

It's not the doing of pe in the rain that's the problem, it's the not being able to dry off properly & put on dry underwear!

The choice of no underwear for the rest of the day or wet underwear...

YANBU

My dh had to go out in that rain to let the dogs out and got caught in that rain. In a matter of minutes he was soaked through and his shoes are still drying out. His clothes were dripping and you could wring them out, including his pants.

The rain was extremely heavy and NWIH should a child do PE in that weather.

Rain? Yes, as long as they have dry clothes to change into. Torrential rain? No fucking way. Making a child sit in wet clothes afterwards is cruel. My children are not special snowflakes, but they are human and no one should be made to sit in soaking wet clothes.

I'd be more concerned about the wet coat. What about children that had to walk home after school? Pop spare pants and vest in the PE bag.

ladycardamom · 20/09/2015 15:49

That sounds miserable, I would hate to be forced to do PE in the rain.

"Pop spare pants and vest in the PE bag"

Where do they change though?

Would she be able to change her underwear?

I think it's ridiculous that we force kids to do things that adults wouldn't be made to do.

Imagine the uproar if prisoners were forced to spend time outside in very adverse weather such as rain.

Yes some people do work outside in all weathers but they choose to do this, they aren't forced to be there like at school.

Yes generally kids should be made to do pe in most weathers but some common sense should be used and if it's going to be more detrimental to do pe outside than not then it should swapped for something more constructive e.g pe indoors or a theory lesson indoors. In this case I think 30 cold, soaking wet kids (little girls (or boys) with long soaking wet hair) seems ridiculous so they can spend 40 minutes playing rounders or cricket.

It is ridiculous to let kids get soaking wet then go back into the classroom- apart from anything else they'll just drip all over everything.

But it won't make them ill!!!!!

mewkins · 20/09/2015 20:11

It's ridiculous to make children do miserable uncomfortable things that us adults would no way agree to. What a strange thing childhood is.

HormonalHeap · 20/09/2015 20:23

Of course it's bloody ridiculous. Mine did it Friday in a t-shirt and shorts. I was livid. And yes, being cold lowers your immune system leaving you susceptible to viruses. wtf are these teachers trying to prove?
