To not want my DD doing PE in torrential rain!

DD is in year 6 and yesterday they did PE in the rain. Now i have no problem with her doing PE in the rain but this was ridiculous. She had a waterproof coat on (not a pe coat, big heavy coat) which was soaked through and i could wring her PE kit out that she had to bring home to be washed because it was so wet!

Now she is on the sofa with a stinking cold - now i know she didn't get the cold because of the rain but she started sniffling last night so i am pretty sure it hasn't helped.

Her teacher (who thankfully she only has for PE) made a big thing of telling them they would do PE in all weathers but this was ridiculous.

I got caught out in it yesterday too, but i was able to come home and have a warm shower straight away and dry off, not sit in my fucking wet vest and pants.

No point in complaining teacher is an arrogant twat so ranting on here instead.

Thankyou steppemum, i thoguht i was making that up! but i am sure i have read similar.

There was no opportunity to get showered or warm up, everything wringing wet. She came out of school shivvering. Usually quite happy to go on long treks in the woods etc in pouring rain, dressed appropriately, ready to have a nice hot chocolate and a shower on our return.

I am not really sure WHY children need to toughen up? Why is that?

Exercise is exercise, I don't get the point in forcing people to run outdoors when they can do the same thing indoors. I HATED PE in the rain at school - I had glasses and couldn't see a thing after 30 seconds - couldn't wear contacts due to an astigmatism and couldn't see a thing without my glasses.

Luckily in secondary, my teacher had some common sense and we did PE indoors when it rained!

saltlakecity · 19/09/2015 16:35

Because life is tough. Imagine if kids couldn't cope with a bit of rain. Rediculous . Kids and adults both benefit from being a little bit tough.

BertrandRussell · 19/09/2015 16:35

If you don't think the rain caused her cold, why did you mention it?

PurpleHairAndPearls · 19/09/2015 16:38

At primary they don't generally have showers after PE though do they, or even a towel in their PE bags?

If PE wasn't the last lesson of they day, they would then have had to sit with wet hair and underwear if it was really heavy rain.

At secondary, with showers and towels and bloody compulsory 100 quid PE kit I would have said YABU. I used to love running in the rain, and think a lot of DC nowadays (old gimmer) don't get enough fresh air/exercise, but on this occasion, I think YANBU. If there was an alternative of indoor PE, it seems a bit stupid not to take it.

MissFitt68 · 19/09/2015 16:38

Exercising in the rain is fine. It's actually quite nice, I do it often

But then go home and shower/change and get dry. How long was she sat in wet clothes with wet hair? Not pleasant

5madthings · 19/09/2015 16:39

I would be pissed if my kid had had to sit in wet underwear for rest of school day. It will be cold and uncomfortable.

We wrre out in the heavy rain yesterday but dressed appropriately, so proper waterproof coats and trousers and boots. it really wasn't the weather to be doing pe outside on. It was torrential rain, roads were flooding, the sky went so dark you needed lights etc. My kids had fun riding home from school in it, but we got home, stripped off, dried put on warm clothes and then had a hot drink!

partialderivative · 19/09/2015 16:39

Is 'poor diddums' an mn phrase?

bettyberry · 19/09/2015 16:39

I kick my DS out to play in the rain. I give him a tarp and tell him to build a shelter. I think his school over react when they cancel PE because of drizzle!

YABU. I think doing PE in all weathers (unless its -20 or you need ice skates on the playground) instils good habits in children.

Regularhiding · 19/09/2015 16:39

I love the rain.
I hate all PE.

But why do people think it's better to leave DC uncomfortable, when there is an alternative? To "toughen them up"? I wouldn't treat my DC like this myself.

Goodness, there is enough time and scenarios at secondary school to really "toughen them up". I don't think sitting with wet hair and knickers in primary school is imparting any particular skills or wisdom. It's a bit pointless.

LockedBox · 19/09/2015 16:42

Fucking Hell, you're getting a bit of a tough time here OP - it's all gone a bit Monty Python Yorkshireman sketch.

YANBU. I got bloody soaked coming home from work the other day and I felt miserable and I'll by the time I got in. To think of sitting around in soaking wet clothes for ages before I could get home and changed is just horrible.

YANBU. You're really not.

SitsOnFence · 19/09/2015 16:42

I'd be absolutely fine (pleased even) for my DC to do PE in a downpour if it was done properly; I.e. Wearing the right kit and with the ability to remove wet clothing and get warm and dry afterwards.

I would be concerned that they were wearing coats, especially non-waterproof ones. They'd have been better off with just lightweight clothing that would be comfortable when wet or, for prolonged periods in very adverse weather, a lightweight, breathable waterproof jacket. Also, if it's a general policy to go out in any weather, I'd expect them to ask for a spare set of underwear to be kept at school/brought in on wet days. DS's Beaver group is very keen on going out in any weather, and this is a summary of what they suggest in their letters to parents.

Youarentkiddingme · 19/09/2015 16:43

Is don't see the problem with pupils doing PE in all weathers.

But if that's the intent then parents should be informed and so they can provide dry underwear, towel and proper waterproof PE top. Not something usually found in a primary school pupils PE bag. They are usually encouraged to leave the PE kit there for the half term - indicating that they don't intend for them to get extremely wet, muddy or uncomfortable hot and sweaty.

A bit of a mix then, most thinking i should get over myself - fair dos :)

It just seems a bit silly, the rain was ridiculous, i was riding my bike and got caught in it, had to stop because i coudlnt see where i was going it was so heavy.

Hassled · 19/09/2015 16:44

There's reasonable all-weathers and then there's ridiculous "toughing it out for the sake of it" all-weathers. Making them do PE in torrential rain will do nothing except put them off PE.

partialderivative · 19/09/2015 16:44

I played football, rugby and any other sport during the winter terms.

Oops, sorry, we have to consider the darling snowflakes that are our daughters.

BoboChic · 19/09/2015 16:44

Getting cold, especially getting cold (and, worse still, cold feet) does cause a cold. A cold is a virus that is much more likely to take hold in people who are... Cold. Hence the name!

MythicalKings · 19/09/2015 16:45

YANBU.

This thread reminds me why I loathed PE.

5madthings · 19/09/2015 16:45

Op where are you? If you are anywhere near me and I think you are from previous threads... It wasn't a bit of rain, it was a full on downpour. Parents were late picking up from my kids school as it affected the roads, and at home time teachers weren't letting kids out into the playground until parents were there. People thought I was mad for cycling, but wr always do and I had packed waterproof clothes that the kids put on before we cycled home.

BoboChic · 19/09/2015 16:45

Getting cold (especially wet) feet

Rosa · 19/09/2015 16:45

Teacher is an inconsiderate twat. She probably dried off had a change of clothing and a coffee afterwards.

TheoriginalLEM · 19/09/2015 16:46

Am definately going to be sending a spare vest etc in. Generally they are not allowed to wear anything other than the school sweaters for pe so probably a waste of money buying waterproof kit.
