Does anybody have any tips? I daren't take her to a hairdresser as I've heard that double crowns are a hairdressers worst nightmare. She's 2 and has really, thick, curly hair.

I read somewhere that double crowns can also be a sign of developmental delays but she's hitting all of her milestones so I'm thinking this is just an old wives tale.

Zippidy, seriously get on youtube. Look at things like 'dutch flower braid' or 'crown braid'. It looks quite impressive but really it's just variations on a basic French plait. If you can do that, you can do a zillion interesting things.

Right I am going to get dd1, and a hairbrush and set ,yield up with Youtube, I will try to photograph the results.

Dd1 isn't the one with the double crown, but she has long straight, hanging around hair, so it would be nice to get it up nicely.

There are lots of hairstyles that work well with double crowns. I know it's natural to worry, but please try to be careful that your daughter doesn't pick up on your attitude about her hair--these things can end up becoming big sources of insecurity later on.

My niece has a double crown and is VERY clever and precocious--don't worry about your daughter!

I'd love to braid DD's hair like that but it's quite coarse textured and tangles incredibly easily and doesn't take well to any sort of braiding unless you spend about half an hour brushing every tiny snag out first. We detangle every night before bed and brush it all back into a single plait, but it is always quite matted by the morning despite being in a plait.

I've got think hair with one random kink and double crown,as a child I always had very tight French braid that would stay in for days. As a teen i had it cut very short and have kept it short since.ds has a double crown widows peak and thick hair,we keep it short and spiky, but there's always random bits sticking out everywhere scruff bag

PrimalLass · 19/09/2015 14:29

With DD's hair we just grew it really long.

Me and all 3 DC's have double crowns and we're all developmentally fine - I've never heard of anything like that before!
I keep mine in a fairly short bob, DS is cropped (and a leftie) and the girls both have shoulder length hair. Pigtails are never equal but that's the only issue I've ever noticed.

Feel a bit queasy after googling what this isShock

actually it seems to be quite normal and you would never notice if it's not pointed out to you.

I do hope you are joking! !

Actually, I've just google it and the images are weird. My entire family have double crowns, there are 3 of us that are left handed. DH and I have 5 degrees from ancient universities between us. There is no link beyond double crowns, left handed ness and being a bit slow except that the people who come out with these so called links are a bit slow themselves.

I'm a scientist, about half the people at work are left handed (can't say I've watched their hair very much but presumably there will be quite a few of us who have double crowns).

Pinkrblue · 19/09/2015 15:48

Dh and I are both left handed and both have double crowns. We both have degeees also. Dd has a double crown as well...

There is a link between hair whorls and developmental delay as they grow in a way linked to brain development (can't recall how exactly!) But they are usually only indicative when they are in an unusual place, eg down low behind an ear: that can be symptomatic of unusual brain growth. A standard double crown not indicative of problems! Did you know there is also a link between hair whorls which are anticlockwise in terms of which way the hair grows, and homosexuality? It was discovered by accident by a student surveying hair growth direction. Generally about 85% of hair grows clockwise from the crown. The student happened to run the survey on a 'gay' beach ( in Brazil iirc) and found a much higher proportion of anticlockwise whorls. It has since been replicated. I believe about 30% of gay' people have an anticlockwise hair whorl, when it only occurs in 15 ish percent of the population. I haven't looked up these figures for this post so they are approximate! Fascinating though.
