To have not noticed about the 5p carrier bag charge?

I feel it was sprung upon us! When was it officially agreed by government?

I was in Tesco today and saw the signs that from sometime next month it will be enforced.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with the charge and have heard about it being discussed for years, but I didn't know it had been made mandatory! The cashier looked at me pityingly when I queried it and said it has been all over This Morning the media for weeks. Have I been too distracted by Jeremy Corbyn's lovely visage to notice this?

I buy something and it needs to be put in a bag. Its not rocket science. The seller needs to put it in something in order for you to take it away.

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 20:36

Where I am, clothes shops don't provide bags. It felt weird at first, I felt like a shoplifter walking out with a t shirt shoved in my handbag. But I'm used to it now.

twirlypoo · 15/09/2015 20:36

I just can't get worked up over this, but, a plastic bag is a product in itself that retailers have to pay for. We have been lucky till now that they haven't passed that cost on to us. Why should they give us them for free?

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:36

We buy more so we need to be penalised? really sirzy?

BitOutOfPractice · 15/09/2015 20:36

I agree with the charge too. I'm just worried that it's the poor blummin' retail staff that will have to enforce it and face the public's ire Sad

JeremySpokeInClassToday · 15/09/2015 20:36

JuJu - why shouldn't the consumer be responsible ?
Don't most of us already have a drawrer stuffed full of these carrier bags ? Do you not see the wastefulness of this ?

cashewnutty · 15/09/2015 20:37

It is also not rocket science to change that round and say you buy something, you need to take it way. You have paid for it, it now belongs to you. You have to find a way to take it away. You provide your own bag.

didireallysaythat · 15/09/2015 20:37

I can't wait for it. I'm still amazed by the number of bags people use.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:37

Why are you getting "used" to it? Why?

Angelika321 · 15/09/2015 20:37

Scholes34 I'm terribly disorganised in all areas of my life. It never occurs to me to pack the odd clothing shop bags I may need to transport my shopping.

Like I said I'm happy to pay if I get a decent quality bag.

Scholes34 · 15/09/2015 20:38

JuJu - you're only being penalised because you're not organised enough to take you own bags. I'm sure it will become second nature before too long.

FuzzyWizard · 15/09/2015 20:38

What solution do you think could be found? The problem is people don't reuse bags. How would you make people reuse bags without charging? And just to be clear this isn't a charge that the supermarkets are passing on, shops didn't really want the charge. They don't have the option to not charge customers for bags and pay it themselves.
People continuing to be given a new bag for each purchase isn't a realistic option regardless of what you make the bags from.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:40

Of course you dont cashew. Ok then, on line say. Someone purchases something then they need to collect? really? Isnt it sent?

cashewnutty · 15/09/2015 20:40

Also, i have never seen any retail staff getting stick for this. It was well publicised in Scotland and everyone just got on with it. It is great seeing everyone come in with their assortment of bags and you end up not advertising any stores at all. On a recent visit to England we were gobsmacked to be offered a carrier bag in a shop and turned it down. Our behaviour has absolutely changed.

twirlypoo · 15/09/2015 20:40

Juju, honestly, why do you care about this so much? Just shove a carrier bag in your handbag and get on with your life! It's not a big deal, you will get used to it!

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:40

its sent in a package... sellers pack their goods. sellers pay for packaging.

cashewnutty · 15/09/2015 20:41

I purchase something on line then i pay for postage. I don't see what you are getting at.

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:42

Its another pressure from huge companies that refuse to recognise its their responsibility thats why Twirl.

OrangePeels · 15/09/2015 20:42

There used to always be cardboard boxes available at the end of the checkout. When did they disappear?

JuJuMun69 · 15/09/2015 20:42

You pay for the thing to get to you, you dont pay for packaging Cashew.

cashewnutty · 15/09/2015 20:42

It didn't come from the companies themselves, it came from government.

Pipbin · 15/09/2015 20:43

I buy something and it needs to be put in a bag. Its not rocket science. The seller needs to put it in something in order for you to take it away.

The seller doesn't need to give you shit all. Once you have paid for it then it's your problem.
You don't accidentally go shopping. Get a fold up bag and attach it to your house keys. That way you can be sure you'll have it with you. unless your bridge doesn't have a lockable door

cashewnutty · 15/09/2015 20:43

Yeah - it is called postage and packing P&P whatever. It is both things. Still baffled.

BitOutOfPractice · 15/09/2015 20:44

Cashew talk to the people at my local little supermarket branch. They've already had grief just for mentioning it's happening next month. The Public can be horrible sometimes

treaclesoda · 15/09/2015 20:44

When you pay for something online they nearly always refer to charging for postage and packaging, so it's already pretty normal to pay for packaging.
