Not to cut up apples for an 8 year old

Would you/ do you? There is no reason he can't eat them whole, he just doesn't want to, and he eats about 4 a day (can't pre cut them as brown apple is as bad or worse than uncut apple...). I suggested he cut them himself, as he's quite capable of and eager to chop and peel vegetables for meals and does so several times a week minimum, but he quarters them then calls me to cut out the core, as apparently that is a high risk operation ... Confused

Get one of those gadgets from IKEA that does it for him.

sleepyhead · 14/09/2015 14:18

Bargain.

balancingfigure · 14/09/2015 14:20

YNBU although my DD actually uses one of those slicer things that you squash down and it segments and cores in one. She has no reason she can't eat them whole but I did cut them up for a while for her because she doesn't eat that much fruit so I was happy to encourage it!

Ilikedmyoldusernamebetter · 14/09/2015 14:22

Oh now that probably is a solution! Bloody long way to our nearest Ikea though unfortunately, would be a 3 hour round trip...

I cut round the core, leaving the core contained in a four-sided piece, if that makes sense?

winchester1 · 14/09/2015 14:26

Can't he just use a potato peeler to core it and then cut it into quarters afterwards.

coffeeisnectar · 14/09/2015 14:27

They sell them on Amazon too. Dd got one in her stocking last Xmas and she was overjoyed. She's a bit odd tbh though :o

Micah · 14/09/2015 14:29

I cut my 7.5 year olds apples up.

Mainly because she doesn't eat fruit and veg. If it means she'll eat an apple once in a while I'm going with it.

Ilikedmyoldusernamebetter · 14/09/2015 14:37

That would/ should work whatdoIget!

We have the wrong style of peelers I guess winchester - I've never got on with the type I guess you could stab into an apple to core it so we don't have them, have the kind of slingshot shape ones if that makes sense.

If whatdoIget's chopping method is somehow impossible then Amazon it is.

There isn't a problem getting him to eat fruit generally, so I am not really motivated to chop endless apples - especially as his little brother happily eats them whole unless DS1 is going on about having his chopped up at the time, in which case he needs his chopped to... Hmm

My DD is 14. She had problems with her teeth and lots of sores in the past. Orthodonist now on the case and realigned her jaw, but needs to re- adjust her bite. She's only ever eaten apples if sliced - there are some who may say I pamper her too much but to be honest I'd rather she eat them than not. She has a friend with no problems who will only eat apples if they're peeled and sliced - Mum won't do it so consequently she refuses to eat them.

Ilikedmyoldusernamebetter · 14/09/2015 14:40

Is her friend 14 ifonly? Why can a 14 year old not peel and chop her own apples? Hmm

OldBeanbagz · 14/09/2015 14:41

I bought an apple chopper off eBay. It cost me less than £2 delivered.

DD (13) uses it all the time as she can't bite apples (and other hard foods) due to having a previously broken front tooth.

WorktoLive · 14/09/2015 14:52

Nice stealth boast about prodigious apple consumption levels OP Smile.

You can often get Ikea things from ebay.

Inkanta · 14/09/2015 14:54

Aw cut them up for him if that's how he prefers them. Smile

dreamingofsun · 14/09/2015 14:58

my MIL used to take the peel off as well. they expected me to do it after she'd been looking after them!!

Spartans · 14/09/2015 15:01

We have one of those Apple chopping devices. Ds eats more apples because he likes to have a go with it.

I use to cut apples for me as well. No idea why, but I prefer them sliced too.

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/09/2015 15:05

Ds1 is not quite 8. If he's having an apple with his lunch, or as a snack, then usually I'll not bother, and just make him eat it "on the core", as it were. But sometimes he'll ask for apple and cheese for lunch - and then I'll quarter it and core it for him, and cut 4 lumps of cheese, 1 to go with each quarter.

DS2 is still only 2 and will eat apple if someone offers him a broken off piece, or if I cut slices off an apple for him - but won't eat enough of it "on the core", so I don't give him a whole apple (wasteful).

ThumbWitchesAbroad · 14/09/2015 15:06

spartans - I don't know about you, but I find the texture of apples on my teeth starts to irritate me slightly after a while - if an apple is cut into quarters, then my teeth have far less work to do than if I was biting into a whole apple all the time. So quartered apples work well for me too as opposed to whole ones, purely because my teeth have to grate against the apple texture far less with cut pieces than with the whole fruit.

ChipsandGuac · 14/09/2015 15:09

I've read a thread like this before. All hell broke loose with the anti cutter uppers declaring the cutter uppers over indulgent. It was great!

I make a fruit salad every day as part of their after school snack. Not because I'm pandering to my little darlings but because they like fruit salad and I want them to eat fruit.

MrsGentlyBenevolent · 14/09/2015 15:21

Is he accident prone? I mean, I'm an adult and do 90% of all fruit and veg cutting (apples taste better cut up!), but there's a good chance I end up with a nick or cut many a times as well. My poor fingers look like a clumsy samurai has been at them. I hate cutting and chopping, horrible part of food prep.

CarmenMonoxide · 14/09/2015 15:25

Grin at he suggestion this is an apple consumption stealth boast. I've heard it all now.

Janeymoo50 · 14/09/2015 15:30

I hate eating whole apples, but cut up are fine (although I get the bit about taking the core out, it's quite tricky). Compromise and get him to cut them but you'll do the core bit - problem solved (or buy dried apples). I think this is one of those choose your battle threads tbh.

HaydeeofMonteCristo · 14/09/2015 15:30

Is this about cutted up apple? To go with cutted up pear?

FireflyGirl · 14/09/2015 15:30

I eat my apples the same way as your son, OP. As in, that's the only way I eat them. Keep a special knife at work specifically for cutting up my apples. Don't get my mum to chop the middle bits out though Wink But I am 31.

You know best whether he can use the knife well enough to cut out the core himself. If so, then YANBU to refuse to chop it up for him but don't mock - it's a more than acceptable way to eat an apple Grin

VulcanWoman · 14/09/2015 15:32

I cut my Teenage Son's kiwis, bloody nut that I am!
