I am allergic to cats, WIBU not to visit in-laws who now have 6 of them?

In-laws have always had cats. I can manage 1 or 2 with anti-histamines and inhaler. We had our own cat for a while but I got used to him.

In-laws have just taken in a stray who has had a litter of 3. So now they have 6 cats, only 1 of who will be allowed outside so all hair will be she in their 3 bedroom bungalow. Plus the litter tray situation.

They know I am allergic to cats. I am usually quite rough when we stay there with the just the two cats they had. My only A&E trip due to asthma was while staying at their house. I have suggested to DH he will have to take the kids and visit without me. DH is not happy with this plan.

Very selfish of them to have so many cats if someone in their immediate family is allergic

I don't think it's unreasonable of them to have that many cats per se, but making a fuss if the OP doesn't want to stay there is. They can't be expected to deprive themselves of much-loved pets for someone who lives 5 hours away, but being accommodating when the OP visits shouldn't be too much to ask.

6 cats is too many unless you are a zoo or a breeder. No need.

HermioneWeasley · 14/09/2015 19:34

Dojo how do you suggest they accommodate the OP when they have 6 cats and 2 hospitalised her. Unfortunately there's no middle ground, well except the one she's proposing by staying elsewhere

DoJo · 14/09/2015 20:38

I didn't mean literally accommodate her in their house, but, as I said, not making a fuss or accusing her of weirdness if she wants to camp or stay elsewhere is a reasonable adjustment to make to enable them to have the enjoyment of as many cats as they want without making things difficult for the OP.

yanbu,op. My daughter got me to take her cat when she found my gs wa s allergic. I ended up in Emergency as i turned out to be allergic. That was 1 cat. Sleep in the vw and only go in for the bathroom. WTH is wrong with your h? It seems from various threads that the latest generation of hs have co-opted their mothers as allies to get their ws in line.

Yanbu, I'm fine with short visits to people who have pets, and I can cope with dogs as they dont tend to make me as bad and listen when tell them to go away. No way would I stay somewhere that caused a hospital visit!

sashh · 15/09/2015 07:47

I could always sleep on the drive in our VW

If it's a camper van I've known a couple of people do this fort various reasons, one family have a child with autism who doesn't do visiting very well so having a van means he has 'home' with him. Another is a MIL and PIL of someone I worked with who just preferred to take their own bed.

I love cats but I would not expect anyone to make themselves ill.

One point if this is a new mum and small kittens then they should be confined to one room, hell if you were visiting me the cat would be confined to one room.

Makeminered · 15/09/2015 10:07

But not being in the same room makes no difference if they have been in there previously. Even a good Hoover would make no difference to me.

Don't put yourself at risk. They accept you with the limitations you need to impose or they come to you. Their choice.

YANBU as a fellow cat allergy sufferer I feel your pain. My mum has one, my brother has two, they are bloody everywhere! Our main thing is when staying over making sure the bedding is clean on and door shut to prevent furry intruders. I also obviously don't touch them or let them near me and keep away from particularly fur covered furniture. Generally with inhalers and antihistamines its ok
