to LTB after 25 years of loyalty because the bastard won't die?

When I left home for university 25+ years ago my parents bought me a cheap Swan kettle. It's moved with me from student digs to student digs to first home, to a new country and many house moves in between. Every morning without fail it's there to provide me with my morning coffee and top ups throughout the day. But the fact is, the love has gone. It looks its age, like a well used 1980s appliance. I know I'm shallow to want a nice pretty one that matches my toaster. But the bastard won't die!

AIBU if I send it off with the next charity shop collection? Will I have to face the wrath of the God of Small Appliances and be punished by having to replace my toaster every six months until the end of time?

I don't like to tell you this, but most charity shops don't accept electrical goods ............

5Foot5 · 13/09/2015 16:45

Do you have any DC yourself who might be going to Uni in the next few years. If so you could put it carefully away to give to them when they leave home. It could become an heirloom.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 13/09/2015 16:46

I think it might need to retire!
To a museum...

Although, I still have my iron from uni days.

Contact the Guinness book of records?

Oysterbabe · 13/09/2015 16:48

Just throw off it the bin. A charity shop won't take it.
However don't expect such loyalty from its replacement. In my experience modern appliances aren't built to last.

InimitableJeeves · 13/09/2015 16:52

You will undoubtedly find yourself replacing any replacement every 6 months. We had an old Sony portable TV that soldiered on for 30 years despite the picture quality being a bit crap. When it finally died we rejoiced in getting a replacement with a spiffy picture, but nothing that we've had subsequently has been anywhere near as reliable.

Sighing · 13/09/2015 16:52

I am just contemplating the end to my trusty uni iron. I think it's time has come. It's of a similar age I think. It will probably get retired to the loft, though I do have a relative off to uni. Maybe I ought to offer it!

RiverTam · 13/09/2015 16:53

Don't do it! You will rue the day. Besides, it could become frightfully fashionable at any moment.

MrsLeighHalfpenny · 13/09/2015 16:54

I'm still using my student saucepans 30 years on. New ones come and go - the handles fall off mostly - but my uni ones go on and on.

If you chuck the kettle and buy a new one, be prepared to replace it every couple of years.

MatildaTheCat · 13/09/2015 16:55

In our bedroom we have a tea tray which is down to the fact that I saw kettles on sale in Asda for £3. That was a VERY long time ago. Like you the love has gone. It has yellowed with age and I an sick of the sight of it. But to throw it away would be a cruel act of euthanasia and I fear the wrath of the God of small appliances. Have much bitter experience of the wrath of large appliances.

No, I am sorry, you are wed to your kettle until death do you part. As am I. Grin hopefully their death not ours

Fizzielove · 13/09/2015 16:56

We need a pic OP?

Hassled · 13/09/2015 16:57

I still have my student kitchen knife. It's the best knife and I will never abandon it for a younger model. Where's your loyalty, goddammit?

msrisotto · 13/09/2015 16:58

Some charities specialise in taking electricals, keep your eyes open.

catfordbetty · 13/09/2015 16:59

I had a television like that, lasted for 20 years. Wanted a flat, rectangular HD job like everyone else but the bastard refused to die. One Christmas the picture went green and I thought, this it, I'm on the way - turned out the antenna lead had slipped out and husband fixed it. Idiot. Finally, DM said she couldn't hear it properly. That's it I said, I will not allow DM to suffer and went straight out for a Sony Bravia. Turned out DM actually going deaf and new TV made no difference. Oh dear. Never mind.

londonrach · 13/09/2015 16:59

Sadly if you replace the ugly vintage kettle with a new better looking model you will have to replace the new model every six months! They dont make electrical goods as they used to! (Sighs ive been through three rice cookers in the last 6 months having replaced my ugly old one from uni dats..,wish id kept it now)

AnyoneButAndre · 13/09/2015 16:59

Freecycle?

PacificDogwood · 13/09/2015 16:59

Oh yes, picture please!

It could be painfully retro cool - or almost anyway!

Don't throw it in the bin, it needs to go to the electrical bit of your local refuse centre.

We still use and love DH's student bread knife btw.

Darcourse · 13/09/2015 17:00

Don't throw it away OP! You need to replace it and box it up and put it in the attic for 10 years and then throw it away. Grin

electricflyzapper · 13/09/2015 17:00

Simple solution:

Bung the old kettle in a cupboard.

Buy shiny new one.

When shiny new one dies within 6 months, you can have a loving reunion with old kettle. They do say make up sex is the best!

YellowJerseyPan · 13/09/2015 17:02

Send it to me OP. It will be loved, used and cared for. You can even come visit. Poor thing.

hedgehogsdontbite · 13/09/2015 17:03

So basically you are saying you want a trophy kettle? You should be ashamed of yourself!

Jux · 13/09/2015 17:04

Don't chuck it, you'll regret it. Even my 'new' kettle has become crap - noisy and slow, though I chose it precisely because Which? said it was quiet and quick. You will never have one as good as the one you have now.

Our charity shops here take electrical good. I've got a lovely steamer from one, CD players, all sorts.

I would put it in a cupboard, buy a new one which matches your toaster and when it turn to shit, get out your old one.

hedgehogsdontbite · 13/09/2015 17:04

The charity shop near me does take electrical stuff. I don't know if I can live with the guilt though.

RachelZoe · 13/09/2015 17:06

I would have to keep it just to see how long it will actually last, out of amazement more than anything else. It's not that ugly Sad

I like your pink flower pots.
