to LTB after 25 years of loyalty because the bastard won't die?

When I left home for university 25+ years ago my parents bought me a cheap Swan kettle. It's moved with me from student digs to student digs to first home, to a new country and many house moves in between. Every morning without fail it's there to provide me with my morning coffee and top ups throughout the day. But the fact is, the love has gone. It looks its age, like a well used 1980s appliance. I know I'm shallow to want a nice pretty one that matches my toaster. But the bastard won't die!

AIBU if I send it off with the next charity shop collection? Will I have to face the wrath of the God of Small Appliances and be punished by having to replace my toaster every six months until the end of time?

Put it in the loft - just in case.

This is exactly what my grandad did with his chest freezer.
Got a nice upright freezer due to kitchen re-jig, so chest freezer was surplus to requirements.
After his death, a decision was made to leave it in situ after selling up as the hatch was now considerably smaller than the freezer.
My dad & uncles can't believe he even helped get it up there - why?!?!

We get our kettles from John Lewis because of the two-year guarantee they have on all electricals. Have had two new ones on the guarantee. And the replacement kettles come with their own two-year guarantees.

Should be "Can't believe they even"

Not "can't believe he even"

Don't chuck it - all new appliances are rubbish (either they will break fast or their fabulous modern design will annoy you in a small but niggling way).

Look OP, if you are no longer in love then you must make the decision and part. But you must be fair, if this is simply an infatuation and you need to crawl back when your shoddy new appliance fails no way will your faithful kettle do the Pick Me Dance. No, you will be left forever regretful and wishing you had had a little more loyalty. Sad

Get a boiling water tap then you have not replaced the kettle which can go in the back of a cupboard for "emergencies"

Give it a good scrub and polish the plastic should come up all new and fresh looking and if you are still not happy, but some special paint (acrylic paint or ceramic?) and paint the outside a new colour, you could even paint flowers on the outside to brighten it up- just don't pain inside the housing where the kettle plug goes in- you won't see in there anyway once the lead if plugged back in. And be grateful you have got a magnificent well used faithful kettle. As others have said you will soon get sick of having to replace any new kettle you bought as they never seem to last long at all these days.
