A dog ran into my house and the owner blamed ME

I was getting toddler dd into the car this morning. The car was on my driveway.

A small dog suddenly ran onto the driveway and jumped into the boot. Then, the little blighter went charging off up the driveway and into the house. The door was wide open as we have builders in.

The owner strolled up as the dog was jumping out of the boot. "Oh for GOODNESS SAKE, you've got your DOOR open!" she exclaimed. I was quite taken aback.

I said something like "Er yes, could you call him back please? My cats will be very unhappy at him being in their space."

At this point she did an eye roll and said that obviously if there were CATS there, he'd come out more quickly WOULDN'T he?! One of the builders then came out carrying said small dog (cat sized, yappy type dog, no idea of breed) and handed him to the woman, who harumphed and walked off.

Am I being unreasonable to be a bit Hmm? I don't mind dogs (medium sized ones), but my cats are sensitive souls who are already having to put up with building work. I don't want them being upset by a random dog galloping into the kitchen.

This has happened before, but last time the door was closed so the dog just got into the car. It's never on a lead.

YANBU, the woman sounds slightly unhinged..

CarlaJones · 10/09/2015 21:37

Absolutely barking to blame you for the dog running into your house.

TimeToMuskUp · 10/09/2015 21:39

If you can't keep your dog under control, you have an obligation to keep it on a lead. How ridiculous of her to be huffy. Woman WBU and also pretty irresponsible.

WhyCantIuseTheNameIWant · 10/09/2015 21:57

Does the crazy dog lady not own a lead for her precious pooch?

My cat would have striped the dog's nose...

Junosmum · 10/09/2015 21:58

She's being u. It's the owners responsibility to keep the dog under control, not for other people to control their environment so the dog doesn't wander!

Topseyt · 10/09/2015 21:59

The owner was totally doolally.

Presumably she was out walking along the road with her dog, in which case it should have been on the lead anyway.

Floggingmolly · 10/09/2015 22:00

Slam the boot closed and drive off next time. Bloody nutcase.

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/09/2015 22:02

She's not responsible enough to have a dog. IMO.
It was her responsibility to stop the dog getting into your house, not yours.
I love dogs, but I wouldn't want a strange one running in my home, and then to be blamed for the pleasure!
I honestly don't think you'll get on YABU, but that said . This is Mumsnet so anything could happen

Saltedcaramel4 · 10/09/2015 22:02

Crazy dog lady

Iliveinalighthousewiththeghost · 10/09/2015 22:04

One not on. MNHQ. Pleeeeeeeeeaaassssssse can we kindly have an edit button. (Looks up with puppy dog eyes)

NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 10/09/2015 22:04

Glad you're all agreeing she was a bit of a loon! I was worried that my love of cats had clouded my judgement.

No, it's always off the lead even though this is a fairly busy suburban road. We're a 3 minute walk away from a massive playing field which always has lots of dogs running freely. But their owners put the leads on when it's time to walk home!

BathshebaDarkstone · 10/09/2015 22:04

Oh no, you must NEVER have your own front door open, in case a random dog runs in! Hmm

PigletJohn · 10/09/2015 22:05

I might have offered her a piece of string, since she'd clearly lost her lead.

NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 10/09/2015 22:06

Grin at slamming the boot and driving off!

Omg, what if it did a wee?!

OP posts:
NotAWhaleOmeletteInSight · 10/09/2015 22:14

A wee in the house, not the car, although that would be horrible too.

Jeez what a weirdo! Guess yappy dog owner has ishoos.... Confused

YA deffo NBU!!!!

FyreFly · 10/09/2015 22:23

If my dog had jumped in someone elses boot or ran into someone elses house I would be mortified!! YA certainly NBU. If her dog is prone to doing that sort of thing it should be kept on a lead.

KingJoffreyLikesJaffaCakes · 10/09/2015 22:30

Ah, you should've shut the door and whispered to her,

"He's my dog now..!"

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/09/2015 22:33

Cheeky bloody mare. I'd be really embarrassed if my dog did that. I'd be apologising profusely and trying to get him back. She must be either so entitled she's up her own arse or was so embarrassed that it just came out all wrong.

Actually my dog would never do that because I wouldn't be stupid enough to have him off the lead on a busy road.

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/09/2015 22:37

Joffrey I proper roared at that. Grin

Crazypetlady · 10/09/2015 22:42

Ha joffrey could even be a thread in AIBU
AIBU to be annoyed someone stole my dog because it ran in her house

gaggiagirl · 10/09/2015 22:44

A woman used to find it hilarious when her dog ran into my house most mornings when I was getting the milk in where I used to live. The dog was lovely and friendly. I really like dogs though so i kind of didn't mind. But if you aren't a dog person it must be bloody awful.

SistersOfPercy · 10/09/2015 22:51

Ds lived in an apartment complex where one old lady had a Yorkie, first time he opened the patio doors he found it curled up on the sofa. Unlike yours though op she was very apologetic. Ds and his gf didn't mind though and it visited frequently in summer if the doors were open they in no way encouraged him with biscuits .
They have moved now and he says he misses the dog.

She was bloody rude though and very irresponsible, what if you had a dog aggressive dog in the house? If she can't stop it legging it then it needs to be on a lead.

KurriKurri · 10/09/2015 23:25

My elderly little dog once got out, pottered to the other end of the village and invited herself into someone's house. The homeowner very kindly looked after her until I turned up in a panic looking for her. I took home owner round a big box of chocs the next day, and was very apologetic (although the woman didn't mind and said her children were terribly excited to have had a dog turn up at their house Grin)

Your woman sounds bonkers.

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 10/09/2015 23:31

Woman sounds crazy.

I used to have a dog which was a bugger for getting in people's cars. We lived on a farm with holiday cottages and it used to sneak in. People often had to come back from ten miles down the road as the dog suddenly popped up on the back seat.

Best phone call was from the pub in town 4 miles away saying they'd got my dog. We think it had snuck into a car, hopped out in town. Wondered round town and then recognised my usual watering hole as she'd been in quite a few times with me and trotted in.
