AIBU?

To think there's a limit to 'it's your money you can spend it how you like'

We're always saying it on Mumsnet when folk spunk thousands on a car or a bag and if anyone's slightly critical we always point out that it boosts the economy and is there any chance they're 'jealous' etc etc

Well I've reached my limit of saying spend your money how you like and I am feeling disgusted and critical of a UAE wealthy Arab family spending 50 million quid on a cake. Hmm

I think that's grotesque and obscene. Really, really so.

I don't understand how it's edible either. 1000 hours is about 6 months work surely?

StealthPolarBear · 11/09/2015 17:56

I actually think the cake it pretty good.
But my grandpa would have done better - he was excellent!

StealthPolarBear · 11/09/2015 17:57

And he wouldn't have charged them and delivered it to them with a present, knowing him

The models can keep for years Stealth so can be made in advance - though you need to add tylo, which makes them rock hard - technically still edible, but you might break your teeth, so practically - not

RockinHippy · 11/09/2015 17:59

Sorry, just seen your further posts - if your grandad made cakes, you would know that - sorry for probably telling you how to suck eggs Grin

StealthPolarBear · 11/09/2015 18:02

No he made them for family and friends and I know nothing! Other than he spent days on Rose petals for my wedding cake

OstentatiousBreastfeeder · 11/09/2015 23:13

Those figures are hideous.

It's not even that good....

Rufusgy · 12/09/2015 08:22

The detail is pretty shit. Rough edges. I wouldn't accept that detail from a 50 quid cake shop .

Looks like it was made for some vapid model wannabe.

Rufusgy · 12/09/2015 08:23

50 mill is just made up anyway. They paid a few grand for a cake. Then stuck diamonds on it.

Its very 'Emperor's New Clothes' if you ask me.

But I actually feel that's it's immoral to squander money of that value on something that will be eaten and excreted in the toilet, when even a quarter of it has a great deal of power to help and make a difference in people's lives. You can argue that it's their moneyto spend as they like, and it is; however, for me its smacks of something akin to gluttony - not quite - but it is at the very least crass vanity. If being miserly is an ugly quality then so is the extreme opposite of the spectrum.
