AIBU?

To think there's a limit to 'it's your money you can spend it how you like'

We're always saying it on Mumsnet when folk spunk thousands on a car or a bag and if anyone's slightly critical we always point out that it boosts the economy and is there any chance they're 'jealous' etc etc

Well I've reached my limit of saying spend your money how you like and I am feeling disgusted and critical of a UAE wealthy Arab family spending 50 million quid on a cake. Hmm

I think that's grotesque and obscene. Really, really so.

Wow. If I was going to spend 50 million on a cake (bwahahahaha) I would get a bloody cake maker to make it rather than a fashion designer whose skills obviously do not lie in sugar craft.

BadLad · 09/09/2015 10:43

YANBU - can't wait for the day when the oil runs out on these wankers.

Yes. It's not as if there could possibly be any effect on western countries by the Middle East running out of oil. I can see why it's something to look forward to.

bereal7 · 09/09/2015 10:44

Calmyourself what a horrible attitude, which stinks of jealousy !

missmoon · 09/09/2015 10:50

I think the real obscenity is that we have allowed wealth inequality to reach these ridiculous proportions. Plus that cake looks awful!

fastdaytears · 09/09/2015 10:53

YANBU - can't wait for the day when the oil runs out on these wankers.

Yes that will be fun for everyone when that happens. LOLZ

Cake needs to go on Cake Wrecks,

AbbyCadabra · 09/09/2015 10:54

I could knock them up a lovely batch for fairy cakes for a single miserable million if they wish.

I don't get cake that doesn't look like cake. It's like those ChoccyWoccyDoDah things that are all moulded chocolate and very little cake. Mary Berry will be beside herself.

ShadowLine · 09/09/2015 10:55

Our society is very oil dependant. It'd be bad for everyone if the Middle East runs out of oil, not just for the super rich who can afford to spend 50 million on one cake.

bereal7 · 09/09/2015 10:58

Shadow Even if it wasn't bad for everyone else, why would someone wish such misfortune on someone else simply because they are jealous ? (Not saying you are the jealous one)

Lweji · 09/09/2015 11:00

Just pointing out that the photo showing the table is just the top bit of the cake.

But if I was going to spend 50M on a cake, I'd want moving figures and some fireworks too, maybe a fountain (yes, been watching too many cake decorating programmes).

Pootles2010 · 09/09/2015 11:18

Makes more sense now Lweji! Do you have a link to the whole thing?

fastdaytears · 09/09/2015 11:18

Lweji oh ok! Where can I see the rest of the monstrosity? I'm on the Daily Fail article Blush and can only see the top bit which certainly doesn't look like it weighs 450kg

fastdaytears · 09/09/2015 11:19

Oh and if I spent ??50m on a cake a naked Bradley Cooper would have to jump out of it (holding extra cake)

Lweji · 09/09/2015 11:27

Actually, I'm not sure now. The top photo looked like a tall take in perspective, but I now think it's the cake going on two tables. Ignore me.

elementofsurprise · 09/09/2015 11:29

To all those saying diamonds will be inedible/break teeth etc... no. Obviously you swallow them very carefully when no-one is looking and retrieve them, clean them up and selll them later on... Wink

What is interesting is that the person who made it apparently also made the world's most expensive dress. Clearly her business plan is not a cake or clothing business, but simply parting fools from their money. I'm taking notes!

greathat · 10/09/2015 15:08

Why would you get someone who designs dresses for a living to make you a cake? Plus is that not a month and a half to make the cake? Is it not getting a bit manky by the time its time to eat it?

APlaceOnTheCouch · 10/09/2015 15:12

That's what I thought too! Grin

It said they asked her to make the cake because the figures were wearing dresses that she (cake maker and fashion designer lady) had made for them so I guess they thought: ' who can make a replica dress out of cake? Oh, I know, ask the woman who made the original dress.' Confused And when she heard they had a budget of £50million, she decided she could make cakes too.

ShadowLine · 10/09/2015 16:59

I wonder how much profit she made after buying the diamonds?

Sedona123 · 10/09/2015 19:02

Oh dear. That is one really crap and ugly cake.

LidlSoph · 10/09/2015 19:07

This is super off topic, but it really needs answering as I'm burning to see if anyone sees the same:

To me it just looks like models of icing, where's the actual cake?

shutupanddance · 10/09/2015 19:18

Its shit. The cakes crap and thars just vile spending so much on nought.

wonkywheel · 11/09/2015 16:12

Is it wrong that I'm really incensed more by the fact it's described as a £50mill cake than the fact someone spent that much on it? Imo if the massive majority of the integral value of the cake isn't even the cake/icing/edible ingredients/work to make the cake, then it's NOT a £50million cake, it's a £30 cake with £49,999,970 worth of diamonds on surely?

If I buy/make a birthday cake worth about £20 then plonk it on top of a wedding cake worth £300 then fair enough I can see it'd be a £320 cake (albeit a weird one) but if I then plonk a £10k engagement ring in the top it's not suddenly a "£10k cake", it's just a £320 cake with an expensive decoration on.

aoife24 · 11/09/2015 16:16

50 Million dollars would go a very long way to helping their brothers and sisters in the Ummah displaced by the horrors of Islamic state and the chaos of Afghanistan.

it is crap

StealthPolarBear · 11/09/2015 17:53

Presume they'll pick off the 30 million diamonds so the cake really only cost 20 million. Much more reasonable :o

RockinHippy · 11/09/2015 17:55

WOW - diamonds or not, I am seriously underwhelmed by the look of that cake - it's absolute shite, they were ripped off my 12 year old can genuinely do better than that - I know I can Shock
