To ask what you think Glamping is?

We're just back from a glamping weekend, having paid £110 per night for the privilege of staying in our "canvas cottage" and I feel a bit like I've been conned. Have I missed the point of glamping entirely, or am I being a bit precious?

I kind of expected a bit better service than we had - the tent was set up and the bed was made (with a duvet too small for it, which had a big stain on it), but beyond that it was very much camping in that we had to fetch our own water and look after ourselves. I kind of expected a bit of service for the money we paid - water tank being topped up for us rather than being told "there's the hose" etc.

I appreciate I sound ridiculous and there are far bigger problems in the world, but for the same price we could have had a nice room in a country pub.

So AIBU to think that glamping is just camping, not with extras or anything, just more expensive?

I would expect to 'look after myself' as it were, but its meant to be 'glam' so no, definitely no stains on duvets. Lots of lovely furnishings, probably a log burner, etc.

What sort of tent was it? Can you link to the company?

nemno · 07/09/2015 14:35

I thought it was just camping but with bunting. But I'd only seen the word here on MN.

Branleuse · 07/09/2015 14:35

glamping just means its a fancy tent like a bell tent or something, with the tent and beds set up. I would think that for £110 a night I would have expected actual facilities too though

FrozenPonds · 07/09/2015 14:35

I thought it was just decorating your tent with fairy lights and glittery shit.

I didn't know you could buy a glamping service Shock.

SacredHeart · 07/09/2015 14:36

Glamping usually means tent is set up (maybe with beds or extra blankets) when you arrive and put away for you when you leave.

Some places there will be glamping only showers/toilets (particularly at festivals). Other than that I wouldn't automatically expect more.

BathshebaDarkstone · 07/09/2015 14:39

Glamping is camping in a posh tent with proper furniture. You don't get room service as well.

ghostyslovesheep · 07/09/2015 14:43

Glamping - I would expect electric, a log burner, a loo, nice bedding, warmth and a fancy tent

I camp and I take a Loo and electric hook up etc (and nice bedding) so I would expect more from 'Glamping'

I hope you complained about the stained duvet

Aeroflotgirl · 07/09/2015 16:03

Glam ping, is camping in style. Fancy tent with loo inside. Section for kitchen facilities, put up bed with bedding.

aoife24 · 07/09/2015 16:07

or Yurts instead of tents, but my word, it tends to be very pricey.

MaidOfStars · 07/09/2015 16:12

Fixed tent, a big one.
Decent beds, with linens etc.
A basic kitchen unit with camping cooker and sink.
Water/electricity hook up.
Solar shower.
Dedicated loos, but not necessarily individual ones.

Spidertracker · 07/09/2015 16:16

I thought it was just in a permanent tent with a proper bed, table and a bigger gas ring. Then just dolled up with fairy lights, bunting etc. A bit like hiring a static caravan rather than taking your tourer but essentially the same holiday.
Not sure about the water but I think I would expect to do that myself.

AsTimeGoesBy · 07/09/2015 16:17

Same as camping but with a pre-erected canvas tent (probably yurt, teepee or similar), simply furnished, bedding etc, some sort of log fire and wood available. Bunting. Would assume toilets/showers in a block like other campsites. Never been glamping, but looked into it once or twice.

RachelZoe · 07/09/2015 16:20

You got a bit ripped off I think. Glamping is supposed the be glamorous, no hoses and stains involved. Sadly I think it's one of those "go big or go home" type things, go full wack and spend silly money doing it in Kenya or don't do it at all. I went glamping in Somerset, was shite.

GlitzAndGigglesx · 07/09/2015 16:27

From what I've seen in TV it's camping in yurt style set ups. Maybe the reality is different

BoskyCat · 07/09/2015 16:27

To me it means I would be going camping but wouldn't take a tent, there would be one set up (for what you paid I'm thinking a large canvas bell tent, teepee or something else big and luxurious) with a proper bed, and decorations like rugs and fairy lights. Maybe a woodburning stove with chimney out of the top of the tent. Bunting and a basket of fresh fruit, chocolates and champagne (warming to my theme here! :o) Nice, warm, proper toilets and showers that aren't on a time limit, and that are clean and lovely. (I've been to bogstandard campsites that have that, so it's easy enough to do.)

However I wouldn't expect any kind of service, other than some kind of site owner letting you know where to find them in case of emergency or whatever.

Have never done glamping though (because I love actual camping) so maybe I'm in cloud cuckoo land.

RabbitSaysWoof · 07/09/2015 16:35

We went 'glamping' we stayed in wooden wigwams with en suites, hot and cold running water and a little kitchen area we didn't pay that much but I would be pisses off with a hose for what we did pay. cooking was over a camp fire but that was fun.

Fatmomma99 · 07/09/2015 16:36

we went glamping once a few years ago. It was very luxurious, although still basically a tent. And very expensive. But fun as a one-off

It might not have been this company (can't remember now), but this is the kind of thing:

www.dorsetcountryholidaysandevents.co.uk/

It was thick carpets, proper beds and sofas, a wood burning stove. We had our own eco-loos and a fully set up kitchen area, with surfaces at the proper height, sinks, etc. It was in the open air, but covered so ok to use in the rain.

It was very glam and luxurious.

Obs2015 · 07/09/2015 16:42

Think you were robbed.
I like to think that we go glamping. We have a nice caravan, huge king sized duvets, 3 hobs, oven, fridge freezer and an extra wine fridge. I want for nothing.

LilacRain · 07/09/2015 16:45

I'd assume glamping includes a spacious tent with beds, nice warm bedding, rugs, electric, somewhere to sit etc, maybe some fairy lights and atmospheric touches. I did it once (on a desert trip in India), the tent was huge and had 2 single beds plus an ensuite (separated from main tent with a zippable door) with proper flush toilet and sink with running water. Only downside was a large gap between ground and canvas that let the cold desert wind blow through at night... when we asked why there was a gap, the guide said it was so snakes could get out easily!! Shock

BolshierAyraStark · 07/09/2015 16:48

We had a huge tent with 2 bedrooms, a kitchen with running water, bathroom with roll-top bath with shower & a log stove/fire. Was lovely but we weren't looked after & did everything ourselves ie get pissed as was a hen weekend It was very nice & about as close to camping as I'm ever likely to get...

User543212345 · 07/09/2015 17:24

I possibly was spoiled as we did it in Morocco once where it was a hotel suite under canvas - bathroom, walk in wardrobe etc. I didn't expect that for what we paid this time but being told to top up our water ourselves was a bit of a surprise. There was no electricity but there was a barbecue for us to cook on, and a composting loo/outdoor shower.

I quite like camping if it's rough and ready and thought glamping might have been an ok alternative to campsites. I suspect I need to readjust my expectations. It's funny that I'm OK to pee behind a tree and not wash properly all weekend but sharing a loo/shower block freaks me out.

Buggering about in yurts is my understanding of it.

I know we've looked at going odd times and it's so expensive that I'd rather just stay in a hotel tbh.

Norest · 07/09/2015 19:07

Glamping? Is camping for pussies. Basically. Wink
