Her new music video has no sex references, butts or twerking. She has a class that Nicki Garbage, Miley Virus and Kim Kartrashian lack.

PaulAnkaTheDog · 01/09/2015 13:10

Bloody hell. Kill me now.

TheHouseOnTheLane · 01/09/2015 13:12

Sounds like she's ripped Lana Del Rey off a bit! A GOOD bit!

I do like her but surely Lana's written this one?

BoneyBackJefferson · 01/09/2015 13:19

I'd be more impressed if it wasn't the forth release off the same album

In your opinion of course. Grin I think I offered a perfectly decent explanation.

My dd aged 8 adores her. We spent our summer holiday listening to every one of her albums back to back. Thankfully they are quite good.

I like her - we had a foreign student stay with us a few years ago who looked identical to her to the extent people in the street commented. She was a lovely girl - still in touch so irrationally I feel I have had her to stay and she was lovely!

CassieBearRawr · 01/09/2015 13:36

At the risk of lighting the touch paper and doing a runner (am on lunch and won't be able to reply) I have issues with her issues with race. I don't think she's capital R racist but I think she's utterly, utterly oblivious to her own privilege and the benefits she reaps from it.

That said she's a good pop song writer and and incredibly astute businesswoman. But then again so is Nicki Minaj.

thehypocritesoaf · 01/09/2015 13:40

A people criticising her for songs about exes?!?! C'mon. Half of the songs of the Beatles, bob Dylan to oasis and Sam smith are about exes.

VacantlyStaring · 01/09/2015 13:43

Cassie I agree completely!

Someone upthread mentioned the Shake It Off video where all the white girls are looking prim and pretty doing ballet whilst her black dancers have their backs to the camera, twerking in dungarees.

BoskyCat · 01/09/2015 13:48

*And why does she always play the victim in her songs?

Woman up Taylor.*

Eh? No she doesn't. Loads of her songs are about having had enough taking shit from a man and telling him where to stick it, or self-referential lyrics about what she's like with men (Blank slate)

So it's gonna be forever, or it's gonna go down in flames
You can tell me when it's over, if the high was worth the pain
Got a long list of ex-lovers,they'll tell you I'm insane
Cause you know I love the players and you love the game
Cause we're young and we're reckless, we'll take this way too far
It'll leave you breathless, or with a nasty scar
Got a long list of ex-lovers, they'll tell you I'm insane
But I've got a blank space, baby and I'll write your name

Now I'm not saying that's exquisite poetry, but it's cynical and knowing and about how the man's a victim of her.

Others are about hanging in there and believing in yourself etc. (Mean, Shake it off) Victim how?

BoskyCat · 01/09/2015 13:53

(The racism is a separate issue, I'm not denying she sued all-white ballet dancers and mostly black twerkers. It may be that that's what's mostly available – there are famously few black ballet dancers and it's an issue that's often addressed – but she could have done it if she'd been bothered to)

BoskyCat · 01/09/2015 13:54

used not sued

Squooshed · 01/09/2015 13:55

She does sue a lot too though.

I think maybe some people look at her and see a slim, blonde, feminine-looking woman singing pop and they just assume that she plays the victim and buys into a load of expectations. Then when she doesn't, she's "too big for her boots".

Squooshed · 01/09/2015 13:57

Er no.

Lots of her songs are mournful choons about how she's been wronged by a boy.

jay55 · 01/09/2015 13:59

Wears her heart on her sleeve. Stands up for herself and what she believes in. Apologises when she gets it wrong and writes songs. She's great.

Squooshed · 01/09/2015 13:59

“So go and tell your friends that I’m obsessive and crazy
That’s fine I’ll tell mine that you’re gay!”

Lovely.

TittyBiskwits · 01/09/2015 14:00

I don't like her. She seems awfully smug (although she has a lot to be smug about.) but she comes across (to me) as a bit sterile.

I think she's gone overboard on this feud she has with Katy Perry too.

balletgirlmum · 01/09/2015 14:01

As I dsid before the whole shake it off takes the mickey out of & parodies stereotypes within different dance genres.

RaskolnikovsGarret · 01/09/2015 14:04

I used to like her, but I think her overemphasis on having confident tall blonde skinny long legged best friends could make many lonely teenagers feel even more alone and unattractive. Not good for them I think. But I also think it's unfair to expect her to be a role model. She's just a pop star.
