To book a short break at a holiday camp 5 miles away?

Sun holiday thing.

Friday to Monday, 2 adults, 1 child and a dog £80. I think it is genius - if we need anything I can just pop home and get it, and I can sort the cat out each day.

Dh has reacted as if I've bought a short break to Grays Beach or something. Says we can't do it because everyone will laugh at us Ie his best mate Prick

And I can drop dd off at school Monday morning and get the full three nights (it is term time)

So, Aibu to think this is a very good idea, or is it, as dh says, just a bit weird?

Is it worth it for the swimming pool? The 'free entertainment' bit of Sun Holidays has never been anything other than jawdroppingly bad in my experience. And most of the other stuff, like crazy golf, is an extra charge.

trollkonor · 28/08/2015 20:46

Do you have access to a pool, nice grounds etc thrown in and not an extra? Or whatever facilities you like.

If yes, then why not.

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2015 20:48

It has a pebbly beach, lots of grassy spaces, indoor pool and an adventure playground and a bar Dd won't care, she will love it! Grin

DH and I went to stay in a hotel with a tasting menu and the whole works
that is within walking distance (OK hiking) of our house.

We will do the same again next year

A change is as good as a rest

fastdaytears · 28/08/2015 20:49

Sounds awesome to me. Ignore friend and if DH wants to be an arse about it he can stay at home with the cat.

twirlypoo · 28/08/2015 20:51

I've done this before - I get so ensconced on the holiday site that I don't care where I am. Ds loves sleeping in a hotel or a caravan, we abuse the swimming pool and the 'entertainment' keeps us occupied (though I do need to be drunk for this) go!!! Have fun!!

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2015 20:51

And pony trekking, I forgot the pony trekking! Grin

It's not til May next year so hoping he will come round. I need him to sit with the dog while we go pony trekking Wink

I agree with your DH but that it because I think the only good thing about holiday parks is that they are in a different area and it is great to go out and see different thing. I wouldn't want to stay in an old static caravan just for the sake of it.

ARightOldPickle · 28/08/2015 21:02

Go for it! We went to a Center Parc last year with extended family - it's only 15 miles away but we could have been anywhere. Brilliant time, no travel worries and when we realised we had left the bar b que meat in the freezer a couple of the guys nipped back home for it Grin

Had such a good time we are going again in a couple of weeks!

icclemunchy · 28/08/2015 21:06

How old is DD? Then lad reason I ask is because when we were 14/15 we used to hang out at the local holiday camp and spotted a classmate on holiday there with her parents. I'm afraid to say we teased her mercilessly for a long times afterwards Sad

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2015 21:09

She will be a month shy of five, so it shouldn't be a problem.

We went glamping a few weeks ago to somewhere about 9 miles away. It's about being away. We did pop back for a children's party but left again. It was a good way to try it as I knew we could come home if awful.

Does it matter where you are? Being away means no work or housework so I don't care where I am!

Ilikesweetpeas · 28/08/2015 21:09

We've done this, it was super! Once we were on the complex we could have been anywhere and not travelling was great, especially when going home. If you have somewhere good near you why not use it?

CatThiefKeith · 28/08/2015 21:12

The other advantage os we won't have to take the Friday off work. No getting stuck on the M25, M3, M4 or M1.

I can't see a single disadvantage.

Go for it! Sometimes you just need to get a break away from day to day life doesn't matter where

EnglishGirlApproximately · 28/08/2015 21:12

I live about 3 miles from a Centre Parcs and we go most years. It's just so relaxing, we just chuck everything in the car and don't worry too much about packing properly. We also get day passes for family so they can enjoy a bit of time wit us without committing to a full holiday. Do it!

WhoTheFuckIsSimon · 28/08/2015 21:15

Do it. I also go to a centre parcs very close by. We get there at 10am on the Friday and are first in the pool! Leave late Monday evening. So I feel we get 4 full days when others maybe only get 2 full days.

Hoppinggreen · 28/08/2015 21:44

There's quite a well known spa about 10 mins drive from us, DH and I have been know to stay there overnight.
Do it!

OddBoots · 28/08/2015 21:47

Sounds like a great idea to me. :)

Sounds great, I'd do it.

FeelingSmurfy · 28/08/2015 21:51

When I was in primary school we used to go away to a place that was 15 min away, I'm not sure if they went the loooooong way round Wink but my memories are of being a million miles away! I still find it odd when I drive past, I'm sure it was further!

To your five year old it will be the same as going to Spain (but without the heat) a holiday is a holiday at that age

gingerdad · 28/08/2015 21:55

We've wild camped about 1/2 a mile from our house friends field and often go only 10-15 miles for a weekend away either camping or hoteling. Helps we live in the Lake District.

BrianButterfield · 28/08/2015 21:58

We do this - DC are 4 and 1 and not old enough to care if we're near home. Don't see the point in driving halfway across the country to essentially the same place! DC excited and easily pleased with caravan beds and swimming pools, you still get that "holiday" feeling but without hours in the car with bored kids. We eat out and laze around and have a holiday from chores and routine.
